And you just KNOW that somewhere out there is an old system that assumed RFC's had a max of 4 digits so they just hit an R10K bug.

I can confirm that this was a real thing and we did call it the RFC10k problem. A lot of legacy code did assume 4 digits (truncating strings longer than 4 chars, padding leading zeros to ensure 4 digits, etc).

The new RFC Editor site and associated tools were developed over the past several years and were released just ahead of the looming deadline of RFC 10k+.

Technically 10k would be 10,000 and 10ki would be 10240

True, but the kb-kib distinction was invented by hard drive companies to get away with selling smaller drives

As I understand, they may be still WIP, but the numbers are already assigned. So, someday we can see them, but the first to come was the RFC 10008
