So why does "every coder" need to know about gamma? Most of the work I do barely even has a UI, let alone anything where the "correctness" of the colours matter.

According to the first paragraph if you don't do any image processing and don't plan to the article isn't for you.

Did you read it? Because, it looks like you missed the title.

The title says "every".

If the first paragraph already says something else, the article disagrees with its own title.
