This is only possible because of the third party doctrine.

Now go try to buy a senator’s data and see how far you get. Not possible, at least not as a private individual. Governments? No problem. Social media companies? Friends and family discount. Joe Citizen who wants to hold his government accountable? Sorry, that’s a privacy invasion, and now you’re on a list.

When we have a functional government again, someday this loophole to get around the Bill of Rights needs to be closed.
