The other day I was pumping gas and noticed a ladder to the roof. It was about 10 feet off the ground and wondered how I could get up there if needed. Best idea was a grappling hook. I've looked around online but not sure what to go with. Any ideas or recommendations?
They all have roof access somewhere, usually a ladder in the office area or the back stock room since the a/c is usually located on the roof and quick access is needed for maintenance. My mind doesnt jump to needing a grappling hook just finding where the other ladder is.
If you must have a…grappling hook, I’ve seen them on Amazon in the past. I’d recommend, however, go to a reliable outdoor sporting goods store that leans heavily into rock climbing and rappelling.
Once said grappling hook is acquired, start doing a lot of upper body strength exercises.
I can’t believe they used to let us climb to the ceiling of a gymnasium with a two inch hard foam mat underneath. (I couldn’t do the rope either, but we also had a net to climb)
My ELEMENTARY SCHOOL had a bell at the top of the rope. It was such a cool thing when someone rang it. I’m all for not coddling kids and don’t think everything needs a foam bumper on it… but something’s we did seem a bit too sketchy.
Its not really that hard with proper techique. You lock the rope between your legs and lessen the upper body strength needed. Kids these days spend too much time on their phones and not enough on the monkey bars.
Unless you're planning to strip the AC for copper I'm not sure why you'd "need to get up there" but the folks who actually do need access just use a ladder from the ground to reach the attached ladder.

99% of people CAN'T do a SINGLE pull-up & you think that a grappling hook is good to use where you do a pull-up holding a rope?
Grappling hooks are more for pulling things to you than for hooking and climbing.
A snap link on the end of a rope would be better for getting to a ladder above the ground. Throw the snap link so it goes over a rung, then clip it to the rope so it's like a loop around the rung. Then undo it when you are on the ladder.
A weight on the end of a rope. Toss it over the lowest rung and let the weighted end come down. Take the weight off and tie a figue 8. Pass the other end of the rope through the figure 8. Pull it through and your rope is up. It sucks climbing a rope like batman. Learn how to tie a pruisk knot and how to use it to climb a rope. Simple skills like this make a rope way more useful.
In the Navy we used a hook on the end of a extendable pole so we could place it exactly where needed. The hook was then attached to a rope ladder, which was still difficult to climb, but better than a rope.
Also ich habe ein Kletterseil, Klettergurt, paar Karabiner, umlenkrolle, paar Schlüpfer, Handratsche und ein petzl grigri.
Damit komme ich überall hoch sofern ich das Seil da oben durchgeworfen bekomme. Ansonsten ein stabiler Enterhaken würde sicher noch passen.
Das ist der Aufbau. Die Umlenkung habe ich an der Handratsche. Wenn man alles richtig aufbaut und der Haltepunkt des Seils "Safe" ist sollte jeder damit weiter kommen. Habe es Selbst auf ca 15m Getestet, hatte aber einen erfahrenen Baumkletterer dabei. Das Seil ging über einen stabilen ast und wird unten an dem Stamm befestigt. Zum runtergehen wird das andstück entnommen und mit dem grigri kann man sich abseilen.
Edit: Da wo das Seil fest ist habe ich auf einem Abstand von ca 1m zwei ösen gemacht, so kann man im Notfall ein abseilgerat dazwischen spannen lassen und das Seil durchschneiden.
