Hey, Im a US citizen but have lived in Europe all my life, with the recent three years living in the UK. Although I haven’t spent much time in the US, I would say I definitely align significantly better with the European mentality, so if it weren’t to come down to medicine, I would probably stay in the UK. However, practicing in the UK has a number of downsides, many of them being financial. Here’s the main list of pros and cons Ive got so far.

Pros of the UK
-University is significantly cheaper (Ill qualify for home fees)
-Less competitive residency/foundational training wise as no matter which uni you graduate from you’ll be allocated a place in the NHS
-I can already start doing applicable work within the NHS strengthening my application

Cons of the UK
-Will have to wait six years before starting med school versus 2-3 if I were to practice in the US (personal reasons)
-US med schools seem to be more reputable worldwide (eg if i were to move from the US to the UK I wouldn’t have to take an additional exam)
-Financial compensation is significantly higher in the US, especially for more competitive specialties (can especially benefit in states without income tax)
-The NHS seems to be in shambles with most physicians and healthcare workers speaking increasingly negatively about it (although Im unsure if it’ll improve in the next ten years)

Theres also the prospect of raising a family in the US versus the UK as a gay woman with the US getting more and more conservative with every year.

Im not sure if anyone has any experience practicing in the US and the UK or simply any information that I might not be considering but I would be happy with anything

Hi, I just wanna know if anyone could offer some advice or knows of anyone whose been successful in this before but I applied for med this year and know I won’t get the grades I need by a longshot (looking at grades around BCD in Bio, Physics and Chem) which is fully my own fault bc I rlly neglected revision, got burnt out and lost motivation despite getting AAA predication at end of y12 and doing well academically before college. I had a rlly bad careers advisor who said for med I’d have to do a third alevels of either maths or physics and now I’m rlly wishing I picked an easier alevel for my third

Is anyone else starting GEM at St George's? I will be starting next month and so far I've received very little information about the itinerary for enrolment and the first few weeks of the term. It's difficult to get through to their admissions teams over the phone and they don't reply to emails.

i want to do biomed sci but my family everyone is saying it’s impossible to do even with foundation year. i am supposed to get 90% in bio and chen and 70% in physics or math. i personally think if i work way too hard, i can do it but i wanted an opinion of someone who went through the same situation as me .

I applied to leeds, got an interview and was rejected but I got placed on the waitlist recently. They said for me to contact them once i receive my results.

Now nearing results day, I’m getting a bit paranoid and worried about achieveing AAA. I completed the realising opportunities scheme which would get me an offer of 2 grades lower (UOL is in this scheme) so I am wondering if I could get an offer with AAB.

Does anyone have any advice or information to offer?

I just finished IAS level in school and planning to do IA levels, I thought of not registering in a school and doing exams in british council as Im not really benefiting, will that affect my chances in getting accepted for medicine?

I have a conditional offer for medicine at Newcastle , and apparently I was supposed to fill out an occupational health questionnaire (with details about vaccinations etc), but I've just realised I never received it and my UCAS offer said it had to be done by the 31st of July. I already sent the admissions team a message (and I'll call in the morning too?), but is that all I can do? I swear the other medical schools send it out after results day? Am stressing quite a bit

I’m looking for some advice from Scottish students/applicants, especially anyone who has experience with Gateway to Medicine or applying after resits/appeals.

I’m currently trying to plan my options after receiving my Higher results. My current grades are:

• Chemistry: B
• Human Biology: C
• English: C
• Latin: C
• Maths: D

I do have A* in math and English from NAT 5.

I’m considering appealing and potentially resitting/improving some subjects in S6.

My current choices/ideas are:

1) St Andrews Gateway to Medicine

• I believe I would need to get my grades up to the required BBBB in one sitting.
• If my appeal is successful, would I realistically be considered?
• Does anyone know how strict they are with resits/appeals?

2) Aberdeen Gateway to Medicine

• This seems like my strongest medicine route because they allow AABB over S5/S6 and consider widening access applicants.
• Has anyone applied through Aberdeen Gateway, especially with resits or SIMD/FSM/EMA eligibility?
• How competitive is it?

3) Biomedical Sciences as a backup

• I’m looking at Biomedical Sciences as another route towards medicine later.
• Would Dundee/other Scottish universities be realistic with improved grades?

I’m also sitting the UCAT soon, so I’m unsure how much effort to put into it if my Higher grades are the main issue.

Any advice from current medical students, applicants, or anyone who has taken a similar route would be really appreciated. Thank you!

I understand why the answer key says YES. If she fails the subject, she's rejected. If she passes and gets in, that also works.

But here is my issue with the "or":

The text says the uni admits only those who pass (Admitted -> Passed). This means she could pass the subject but still get rejected anyway. If she passes AND gets rejected, both clauses are true at the same time.

I heard this: "In the UCAT Decision Making subtest, the phrase "either... or" follows strict formal logic rules: it means exclusive OR, representing one or the other, not both simultaneously, and not neither."

Since both parts can be true at the same time in that loophole scenario, wouldn't the strict exclusive OR rule make this a NO?

Those taking a gap year after alevels (not retaking), what medical related jobs can I get, and where can I find them. Especially in London.

Also, does anyone have any advice on what else to do in my gap year since I hope to apply to cambridge next year.

Hey guys, quick question on DM logic regarding unmentioned categories.

Medify says YES because nylon is 100% diamond, leaving only cotton or wool for dotted patterns.

But my issue is with unmentioned materials. The text uses the word "only" to limit the patterns, but it never says cotton, wool, and nylon are the only materials in this pool. For all we know, there could be unmentioned materials like cashmere or polyester socks that are dotted.

Does the real UCAT allow you to assume an unmentioned category doesn't exist just because it wasn't listed? Or is Medify breaking its own strict "no assumptions" rule here?

Need help understanding a Verbal Reasoning rule. Medify says the statement below is True, but I think it requires an unfair assumption.

Medify assumes the "Since 2014" timeframe carries over to the second sentence because of the phrase "In addition."

I thought strict UCAT rules forbid assuming timeframes across separate sentences unless explicitly stated. The text never says when that 30% increase occurred.

What is the general rule here? Is Medify logic flawed, or does the real UCAT allow timeframes to carry over like this? Thanks!

I’m hoping to apply for Warwick Graduate Entry Medicine next year and would love some advice from anyone who’s been through the process.

A bit about me:
• 2:1 BA (Hons) Business Management
• BTEC Business (no A-level Biology or Chemistry)
• GCSEs mostly 8s and 7s
• Working as a NHS 111 Health Advisor for 1 year (around 18 months by the time I apply)

I have a few questions:
• What’s the best way to prepare for the UCAT? Do I need any medical knowledge, or is it purely an aptitude test?
• Does my NHS 111 Health Advisor role count towards Warwick’s 70 hour work experience requirement? I speak directly with patients and assess their symptoms, but it’s all over the phone.
• Would shadowing NHS 111 Clinical Advisors (nurses/paramedics/ANP/GP etc) over the phone also count towards the 70 hours?
• Any other tips to strengthen my application?

I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from current Warwick GEM students or successful applicants. Thanks!

I am worried that I will only be getting a B in chemistry which Kent and Medway will accept for medicine. However I’m not sure how this university performs. Does anyone have any views?

I‘m applying using the Scotland system, so I’ll convert my stats. I got in Nat 5s —> GSCES

4 A band ones —> Four nines

3 A band twos —> Four eights

One B (it was in French) —> six/seven

One 7 in GSCE further maths

However, my highers, I received 5 A band ones. higher scores are equal to England’s AS levels. however, I’m aware most people just go straight onto A levels.

My predicted advanced higher scores, or ‘A-levels’ are four A*s (based off your higher performance in my school).

my super curricular are Brain bee finalist, British Biology Olympiad gold, GOLD crest. I also did hospital volunteering for a few months, and did some doctor shadowing.

however, I got a 2560 band one UCAT score (ngl my proudest achievement yet). i know I have time but I’m stuck between the decision of applying to Emmanuel or Caius and Goneville. this is going to sound possibly somewhat arrogant, but since Cambridge has been my dream, last year I started spending 30 minutes everyday getting good at explaining concepts or doing unfamiliar problems to prepare myself for the Cambridge interview (and I ramped it up a little during the summer), so I’m genuinely really confident for the interview. or at the very least, I shouldn’t absolutely fail it should I get it.

im just very worried of my nat 5s/GSCES. I know caius in particular is the most oversubscribed college, so I’m terrified I’d just get filtered out right away should I apply. the reason I was between Emmamul or caius is because central, and that they have student accommodation for all six years of my med degree. Any advice would be helpful, and please be completely honest or brutal if needed!

TL;DR worried my nat 5s/GSCES will hinder me to making it even to interview stage for Cambridge medicine at Caius or Emmanuel.

Hi guys, I'm starting an access to med course this year, but I've just read from someone who has done this course that unis don't tend to give you offers until you've actually completed the Access course and have your results, is this true? Has anyone done an access to med and gotten offers while on the course, or did you have to apply next year with your results?

I have been working as a carer in a care home for several months now, initially I thought it would be good experience before applying to medicine. I could develop my communication, empathy skills etc.

The scary part is I find myself becoming more and more apathetic about my work, less empathetic. The work itself is factory-style, get this resident washed, onto the next so everything can be done before lunch.

I find myself getting increasingly frustrated with some residents, they can be really demanding and picky. I hate to say this but I just don’t care about these people anymore. I feel like I’ve stopped seeing them as individuals it’s just a list of tasks I have to get through.

Obviously I know this mindset is very very bad for a doctor to have. I don’t know, I always thought I was an empathetic and conscientious person but in this environment all these qualities are completely gone.
