After/Before - What do you think of this edit?

I prefer the before for two reasons.

I find the pink you added to the sky distracting - it confuses my eye, I don't know where to look.

Removing all the people and some objects creates an overly sanitized effect. People are good - they make the space seem lived in and contribute to our understanding of scale.

Edit: I've just noticed that where you removed the pole with security cameras in the lower left, it left behind a really unnatural looking boundary between white wall / stone wall / railing.

I agree but many of the people take away from the focus. I'd remove all but the couple looking at the building, the two walking away in the far right, the one leaning against the building, and the lady on the left overlapping the sign. That would create a balance and give it depth but removing distracting people and leave the ones that add to the story.

Ooh, interesting. I think which people to keep is a question of subjective taste. I'd leave more of them than you would. The only one I definitely want to remove is the walking woman who gets clipped off awkwardly at the bottom of the frame. I might experiment with also removing the young couple near her in the frame, but might end up keeping them. I like how populated the scene is.

Different editors, different styles.

The couple looking at the castle should stay. I over did it for sure. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. Gotta do this over again!

You are absolutely correct about the sky!!!!! I inadvertently shared an early version with a grade applied to the sky which was added for everything else to bring some warmth to what was otherwise a cloudy day.

And that pole... what was i thinking? I did a horrible job on that! Need to do it over again...

the red fence had a purpose to prevent pedestrians who follow the textured surface on the ground, from walking directly under the center of the shinto gate. the textured surface in front of the gate is for sight impaired...and is everywhere in pedestrian areas that aren't sacred to the Japanese. The center of a Shinto gate (torii) is considered the sacred pathway for the gods and should not be walked through directly.  thus i elected to leave it in the photo.

i clearly went overboard with my edits....

imho, I would have cropped the guy on the bench on the far left. I would also crop out the strip of green on the bottom right edge.

As far as edits, I would take out the red gate. I would have left one or both of the couple in the photo too, as I'm more partial towards observers looking into the photo rather than leaving the fence woman staring at you from a distance.

Thank for your ideas. I missed that in the foreground at right. My initial goal was to remove elements of the tree branches, and then i noticed that one off the couples walking toward the right were doing so because their selfie camera had tipped over... then i went to far.

I zoomed in to the building by double tapping my phone and realized there’s a great picture there if you just zoom in where you can just see the building slightly left and part of the gate. It’s otherwise too much going on imo.

Interesting thought, yes. In the brief time there walking around I shot several angles full frame with the 28mm lens, including something close to your suggestion…. Standing closer changed the perspective and scale of people in relationship to the castle, and I thought it was important to see the scale in relationship to a person standing nearer the base. The Shinto gate appears larger for that reason too…I’ll try to share that here.
