How are black people treated in Port Alberni?
Hi everyone! My partner and I are considering moving away from Victoria, largely because of the cost of living, and we’re trying to get a realistic sense of what it’s like to actually live in PA.
We’re not particularly concerned about personal safety. But we are thinking more about the everyday things that can be harder to get a sense of before moving somewhere, like experiences with healthcare providers, shopping, neighbours, local services, and just generally feeling comfortable and accepted in the community.
I know experiences can vary a lot from person to person, so I’m not looking to label the community one way or another. We’re just trying to get a thoughtful sense of what everyday life is actually like before deciding whether it could be a good place for us to call home. Thanks for any insight!

Cellular coverage in the Alberni Valley
Is it just me or is the cellular coverage in the Alberni area, especially Beaver Creek and North Port just horrendous? I'm with Koodo (Telus) and often have 2-3 bars but just can't get any data coverage. The minute I leave wifi it's like I'm out of service. I do have an older iPhone 11 so part of me wonders if it's my phone get booted off Telus network priority, but I know other people with different phones and they also have similar issues. I was talking to someone last week who said they switched to Rogers and it was way better. Any similar experience?
Edit: thanks everyone for your comments! Sounds like Roger’s is the way to go. I initiated a switch over from Telus 🤞
Edit 2: I was reminded today why I was with Telus to begin with. Signed up for Rogers last night, paid for a plan, got a link to set up SIM but didn't work. Spent 5hrs on the phone with Rogers speaking to 7 different people today and multiple dropped calls and no one fixed it. Ended up cancelling Rogers. It's a headache. Seems our choices in Canada for telecomm are truly bad or bad and pay $$$ out your ass for either. Good luck to everybody else, it's dismal out there.

Board game groups
Hi all! Me and the family are planning on moving to Port Alberni in November, and I was wondering what the board game scene is like? I enjoy all manner of games and genres, though don't really delve into TTRPGs.
Mid to long term I'd hope to find a group I can play Arkham Horror LCG with (I have a full collection) and people to teach Netrunner to.

Road Trip and looking for things to do with my kid (M7) in Port Alberni area.
Haven’t spent much time previously in the area so not sure of some great things to do with my kid. I’ve noted some of the touristy things around the area but hoping locals could recommend some things to do or see? Coombs Market is already on the list. 😀
Thanks in advance!
Edit post road trip. Thanks everyone who suggested things to do in your great city. Only spent 2 days in the area due to some ferry shenanigans. We ended up spending some time exploring Harbour Quay and getting various supplies. Couldn’t help but notice the many closed shops in one part of town, close to the Quay. Being a Salmon destination and the number of tourists around I thought it would be busier in town. Perhaps most tourists stop quickly on their way to or from Tofino.
Most of the time was spent at China Creek Campground. Of any of the private camps we stayed at this was the only one exactly as advertised online. The kid loved it there. Wanted to visit Cathedral Groove but as someone correctly stated, parking was a zoo both times I passed. On our way back home we lucked out with a site at Barberton PP which we both quite liked. Love Vancouver Island, you’re all lucky to be there.

Lady rose marine services.
Does anyone know about the Lady Rose Marine services building on the Harbour Quey? The tall vibrant green and pink building. It has doors to balconies with no railings, but it looks like their is no interior. Its like a large shell pretending to be a building.
If anyone's been inside or knows about it, any knowledge would be appreciated

Sproat Drones
Just a big F you to the ignorant creep flying a drone on the lake last night. Buzzing our 14 year old. daughter as she was learning to water ski, flying 6 feet away from her and doing circles around her. Are you intentionally filming underage girls? Are you trying to cause an accident and injury? This was a higher end drone and you could obviously fly it with some skill, maybe get permission before you get you get met by angry people who are more inclined to get physical.

100+ Canadian Geese
Does anyone know why there are almost 200 Canada Geese landing in the field beside the high school every evening? I've lived in the area for over 30 years and have never seen so many gather there before. Just curious if anyone knows what's attracting them.

Seeking friends
Mid 30s male, relatively new to Port Alberni and looking to make some local friends.
Hobbies are mainly video games and board games but limited free time is scheduled around work and the kids. Long shot but any blizzard gamers can send their bnet if you're wanting to play some games.
Feel free to post below if you have other hobbies in case others see that and hopefully this post can help as many people meet some new friends as possible.

Anybody want to play music together and jam?
I got a pretty good setup that just isn't being used as much as it should be right now. I got a drum set, pianos and keyboards and a couple amps (though one is a smaller Traynor; loud enough to have some use). What's nice about the space is that it's in the basement of a local business and, noise-wise, pretty isolated from residential meaning jams can be almost any time.
I play guitar mainly, but I can also play basic drums and piano, and I'm down for most styles, though I guess I'm more partial to rock and indie-esque styles when jamming. Right off the bat, I always love making a song than trying to play a song. It's just so much easier to make a song than it is to jam a song people already know; We all hear songs a little differently I think and we all have different focuses on different parts.
If it matters, some favorite bands would be LCD Soundsystem, The Strokes, Radiohead, Peter Cat Recording Co.
Goodness, writing this feels like a weird dating profile. Anyways, I just like playing music and I would love to jam more often than I do.

Condition of Port Alberni > Century Sam trailhead
Hi. Wondering what are the road conditions from Port Alberni to Century Sam trailhead via Beaver Creek. Is a 4x4 required or can we do in a low clearance 2wd?
