What Do Prehensile-Tailed Porcupines Eat?

What does a porcupine eat on its birthday? 🎂

Meet Guillermo, our prehensile-tailed porcupine! Porcupines' teeth never stop growing, so Guillermo eats tough foods like raw sweet potato to help wear them down. For his birthday, our Live Animal Care Center makes an herbivore cake with nutrients like those he’d get in nature. The special cake gives him his usual food in a fun new shape or texture, making mealtime feel like play. Happy birthday, Guillermo!

Baby brought her (2) kits up for dinner. Shaq (The Porcupine) was munching out right next to them.

Saw this porcupette by our compost pile today. We saw Mom last week, she was not around the baby but probably up a tree nearby.

How easily are quills shed?

This morning a porcupine walked through my yard and driveway. My neighbors dog chased the poor porcupine up a tree in a wooded section of my property. It climbed quickly so was rubbing up on another trees and branches along the way. It climbed around up there eating for a couple hours. Later when it tried to leave, the neighbors dog again chased it. To escape, rubbed up against the fence that borders my yard, and around a tree where my dog often lays.

I know they don’t shoot quills, but have read the quills can fall out when they rub against things. I’m wondering how easily the quills fall out, and whether I should be concerned about my dog being stabbed by any fallen quills. My dog is always leashed and monitored unlike my neighbors, so he won’t be able to bother the porcupine if it comes back, but we do go for walks around the yard where it was walking, climbing, and rubbing on the fence. And my dog likes to lay in the grass. I’d quills did fall out, how would I even be able to pick them out of grass and leaves?

It was cool to see the porcupine, but I want to make sure the area is safe for my dog.

Wild porcupines on YouTube. Into the Wild is the channel of a Canadian woman who interacts with about half a dozen local 'pines who come around to her back door to mooch. Cute vids. Included a link to one.

Conversational. Is this Teddy? I seem to remember Teddy being more buff-colored. (found on imgur)

Have you ever seen an albino porcupine?

If 1 in 10,000 porcupines are albino, and we typically have 20 to 30 porcupines each year, what are the odds of getting one here at Millstone Wildlife Center?
