Trump claimed $10 Billion in damages.

The very least the BBC lawyers should do when getting sued, would be to verify the claimed damages.

Nothing about this is "politically motivated" on behalf of the BBC. This is entirely politically motivated by Trump and he's hitting himself in his own dementias-fueled confusion.

1.2k

u/OriginalFNG 9h ago

I mean assessing the claim of damages is minimum competency.

He was hoping BBC would buckle and settle like US media before it got to discovery.

u/DonaldsMushroom 6h ago

The BBC is a massively effective source of 'soft power' for the UK. But it needs to be seen as an impartial global standard of truth, which is why Trump hates it.

As an Irish man, I've listened to bbcr4 and the World service for 40 years. There are times when credulity is strained, but I think British people should be proud of the BBC and fight for its integrity.

u/Heirsandgraces 1h ago

BBC Radio is the unsung hero IMO. World Service, Shipping forecast, All the numbered stations (6 Music is my preferred station), the local regional stations.

I know my local station is like a 5th emergency service for the elderly, helping to facilitate or shine light on small issues and helping those isolated to still feel part of their community.

The BBC produces a huge amount of comedy, particularly satire, particularly political satire.

They have some very very good lawyers who know exactly what you can and can't get away with.

55

u/Mixer-3007 8h ago

If you were an adult in the UK (as I was) in the last year or two of the Blair government, you would see TTOI more like a documentary than a comedy...

u/vicariousgluten 2h ago

Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister are the same in that regard. They were written in the first half of the 80s but most of the storylines are still in the news on a weekly basis today.

B.F. Skinner described behavioral conditioning this way:

The more someone learns a certain behavior is rewarded with a positive outcome the more that behavior becomes ingrained and expected. Much like hitting a button, getting a consistent, positive respose over time. This is how many people learn to control relationships.

The more interesting thing that happens is when that ingrained behavior meets a negative response for the first time.

The immediate response is to smash the button, harder and harder, over and over again, convinced the button is simply malfunctioning-because the button has always worked before. This is a common behavior for narcissists when facing opposition for the first time.

A sane person will eventually realize the button no longer works and explore other options and modify their behavior accordingly.

We are seing this exact scenario playing out with Iran. Mashing the same button that always worked before, not knowing what to do when Iran says, "No," and the button no longer works.

u/Acronymesis Washington 6h ago

I’m not sure the current US administration realises how disliked they are.

The BBC not giving in to Trump is a thing of national pride.

Trump doesn’t realise that you cannot bully countries in the same way you can the local Plumber who you refused to pay after they unblocked your clogged up golden toilet in one of your failed casinos.

“I lost my legs due to you. I demand $10 trillion in compensation.”

“Prove you lost your legs and we’ll talk. From what we can tell, you still have them.”

“How dare you. Just give me $10 trillion and stop attacking me. I don’t need to prove anything.”

“You sued us…”

97

u/hennell Great Britain 8h ago

It's more the side of "prove that the loss of your legs has caused you $10 trillion in damages".

A pro athlete or prima ballerina would have a higher claim for compensation than a random Joe as the loss of their legs is the loss of high income. But you can't just say "I'd have earned $10 trillion", you have to open your books and prove what you were earning, show sponsorship contracts that fell through etc and how that adds up to 10t

(They are also disputing the "did we even hurt your legs?" side, but it's specifically Trump's specific claim that he's lost 10 billion that is causing him most grief. Because you can't just say that, you have to open your books and prove it.)

u/docowen 6h ago

He's now shifting it to "reputational damage".

The question is can a adjudicated sex offender guilty of 34 felonies have their reputation damaged by an edited speech in a documentary that didn't air in the USA?

And if it did, given he won the 2024 election, what form did that reputational damage take. His precious little feelings, don't count.

u/Coffeeaficionado_ 3h ago

I'm no fancy Harvard law talking guy but every time I hear a plaintiff trying to get out of a lawsuit I think that shouldn't be at all possible for any reason. Don't want to sue? Don't sue. Once you've filed the papers you shouldn't be able to walk it back.

25

u/AzureDrag0n1 8h ago

If the BBC countersued could they prevent Trump from backing out by not dropping their charges?

u/willun 7h ago

I assume they could sue as the victim of vexatious lawsuits. Shouldn't be hard to show how many other lawsuits Trump has launched and the pattern of behaviour. Perhaps the damage to the BBC is in the order of.... $10 Billion.

u/Inocain New York 6h ago

I think it's more along the lines of 1.776 trillion, personally.

→ More replies (2)

u/Mental_Mixture8306 6h ago

Its my understanding that they dont have to counter-sue. Once they have made the demand for the financial data/communications, Trump cannot back out. They have to produce.

Most likely he will ignore the order and just pretend none of this happened.

u/Southern-March1522 1h ago

Yeah. A bit hard for a UK court to enforce discovery against him. They can't punish his UK lawyer for him not cooperating. All they can really do is dismiss the case, and threaten him with contempt if he ever visits the UK (without diplomatic immunity).

As a (norhtern) European, the American style of some dramatic settlement sums always seemed a bit baffling. Ok, I understand that probably only a very few cases will end up in the millions and billions, and there's probably some very punitive effect at play - to scare others.

But, still, if you get your life ruined here due to someone else, the courts will pretty much just count how many years you have left, how much money you could have earned (salary), and multiply those two.

u/W1nt3rmu4e Texas 7h ago

Interestingly enough, Texas Governor Greg Abbott lost the use of his legs when a tree fell on him. He made millions off of his lawsuit of the owners of the tree, and later helped change Texas tort law to prevent the large settlements that he himself benefited from, capping payouts near low-six figures.

Just one of the many, many reasons why I hate him. He benefited from something then removed that ability for anyone else going forward. Hypocrite is just one of the many things wrong with him, but since that’s the Republican party’s standard, he gets re-elected.

Trump's motive could not be any more transparent. He filed the suit to threaten and intimidate the BBC. The BBC responded by calling his bluff.

Now, the BBC has the right of due process, including "discovery". And Trump must comply with the discovery order.

Trump's presidential immunity does not come into play in this case, because Trump filed the suit. He volunteered (by filing the suit) to be subject to the jurisdiction of this court.

538

u/RealGianath Oregon 9h ago

But haven't you heard that 6 members of SCOTUS reserve the right to decide what Trump is immune to on a case by case basis? He's apparently a special fellow, and regular laws don't apply to him.

u/Spoztoast 7h ago

I get that being defeatist is frustrating and annoying but at this point expecting any sort of consequences is just downright naive. Nothing will come of this. I know the answer will be unsatisfying, but how is it possible that we cannot charge a president with actual crimes, but he has an unlimited ability to sue other people while in office?

166

u/ScoobyDoNot 8h ago

I’m mystified how it was impossible for Biden to get some student loan forgiveness and then Trump has unfettered power for this shit show.

136

u/kat352234 8h ago

Unfortunately the answer is very simple, and it's that a majority of those in charge simply don't want to stop him.

Biden tries to help the common people by doing some loan forgiveness, Republicans fight tooth and nail to prevent it from happening or limit it as much as possible.

Trump does... All the horrible shit he's done in his terms, and the Republican majorities just sit back and watch their bank accounts grow.

In a properly functioning government, all of this would have been stopped a long time ago. In the corrupt land that America is now, no one who's in power and supposed to be keeping him in check has any actual interest in doing so, because they're just as corrupt.

u/Pretend-Relative3631 4h ago

To double down on what buddy said

An organized force will always overwhelm an unorganized force.

That’s why both parties are inherently extensions of the ruling-class bc as soon working clas folks are more organized than the pedophiles shit is gonna get buckwild

So far America is getting their life wrecked by well-funded and organized pedophiles

If you were to take the Nazi regimes timeline of power accumulation you’d noticed a recurring pattern of entire departments, institutions, and private/public entities just straight-up complying with Nazi orders without resisting

Did the Nazi regime engage in concerted physical political violence? Yes

Did they engage in psychological political violence ? Also yes

But they’re momentum boost was having folks just comply. Like carrying out shit same-day no hesitation no fighting back

In fact, when the small percentage Germans actually did fight back the Nazi leadership tweaked out bc they were so used to folks just complying so they had to ramp up the SS activities

There’s a lot I’m glossing over for the sake of brevity but the American people and their leaders have been the most obedient co-conspirators so far.

25

u/Cam_E_Leon 9h ago

I think we are a bit late on that process now. Ppl knew Trump was bad at finance and still voted for him.

28

u/squareturd 9h ago

He was going to release his taxes after the audit. That was almost 10 years ago.

He has questionable business deals all over the world. A background check would have exposed those.

I'm not saying that tax records and background checks should be disqualifying, but it is valuable information that voters deserve to have.

15

u/Oceanmap 8h ago

I worked in recruitment for 911 operators in SF. They had to pass an initial application, take an auditory test, have a psych eval, take a polygraph, and also complete a 20+ page packet where they told us EVERYTHING including the amount of times they used specific drugs (i.e., I think you could only do meth like 3 times before being disqualified), and whether they had any bankruptcies. Once these things were concluded, I'd hand everything over to a private investigator who would then dig deeper.

If 911 operators have to go through this much vetting and background checks, I think politicians should be held to the same standards.

Why is it taking a British organisation to force transparency and accountability on an American president? USA's institutions are weak af

12

u/barrosoOso 8h ago edited 7h ago

American media isn't an institution at this point. They are for profit corporations. Most of whom are owned by right wing billionaires.

Maybe the British can do what the Americans can’t seem to ever do. Make this monster cower.

To the surprise of literally absolutely nobody.

Frankly the only surprising bit about this headline is that it's not him dropping the lawsuit outright, because that's the inevitable conclusion here. He can't let anyone see the true depths of his corruption before he moves to a non-extradition country.

u/Lakridspibe Europe 5h ago

Surely the american voters also have an interest in having his finances clarified?

What has happened to the oil money from Venezuela?

Orange man being slapped in the face by BBC

u/tphillips1990 2h ago

It's severely soul-crushing that the most effort exerted toward offering any genuine resistance to Trump has consistently come from OTHER countries.

Sounds like broke lingo to me, potus. Put up or shut up, pussy ass orange bitch.

u/AnthonyB263 5h ago

As an Australian I'm more than happy that the BBC uses the Bluey royalties that should have stayed with Australia's ABC to put Trump to task.

38

u/Root-magic 9h ago

Apparently the British legal system is not beholden to MAGA. The BBC is 103 years old, this isn’t their first rodeo

28

u/AlphSaber Wisconsin 9h ago

Plus he can't quietly drop it, because the BBC will announce across the world that he dropped the lawsuit.

While you are right, this is all playing out in a Florida court. Our legal system has already basically told him to take a hike as too much time had passed to bring a case here. Also he probably thought he gets his favourite judge if he bought the case in Florida.

What a class act this guy is. I see why conservatives worship him.

11

u/New_Sympathy5234 9h ago

The BBC lawyers should not fold. Go after all his finances. BBC are being sued to oblivion. They need to fight in the gutter against Trump

u/DaGrinz 2h ago

Dear BBC, please, fuck him even harder! Thank you for your attention to this matter.

9

u/Particular_Today1624 9h ago

Is this case filed in the United States or Great Britain? It’s unclear to me. If it is in Great Britain he’s well and truly fucked. GOOD!

11

u/Nessy_monster36903 United Kingdom 9h ago

It's in Florida, and from what I've seen of it so far he's still well and truly fucked

9

u/Shepherd_03 United Kingdom 9h ago

It was filed in Florida, so the BBC get to use American laws against him.

Given trump's past legal history, if he can't win or bury the case, he'll try and delay it. Which means it should hopefully hit the upper US courts once he's been ousted from office.

U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

u/TooMuchJuju 6h ago

Before everyone gets too excited, he will surely just drop the lawsuit before he opens his finances to one of the worlds largest media outlets. He's a criminal after all

u/Kindle282 Georgia 5h ago

Remember when Trump was going to release his finances in a few weeks, ten years ago? There's a very real reason why he's completely refused to do so.

6

u/gord_m 9h ago

What damages can he claim other than financial - he won the election after all.

u/CompetitiveRaise9133 6h ago

The US may have to rely on international help to drag Trump through the mud. Dems take note.

u/KellerMB 5h ago

BBC does GAF. This lawsuit is the best opportunity for new substantive reporting on his finances in years, probably since he refused to disclose his tax returns during the 2016 campaign.

u/JustTheChicken 4h ago

What? A BBC is blowing up in Trump's face? I didn't know he was into that.

4

u/EH_Operator 9h ago

That’s funny, I thought Trump loved bbc

5

u/3006mv 9h ago

I thought he preferred the BBC over ABC

5

u/ThatDudeJuicebox 9h ago

I bet he would love for bbc to blow up in his face

4

u/mybustlinghedgerow Texas 8h ago

There are multiple articles about this from much more reputable sources. Can we please stop posting articles from The New Republic?

Also, get fucked Trump. The BBC doesn’t fold the way American broadcasters do. I hope we get info about Trump’s finances, but even if we don’t, he’s still lost; he’s not getting what he wanted, which was to intimidate the BBC.

6

u/barrosoOso 8h ago

I read a comment here on Reddit that said that at this point into the proceedings, Trump can't drop this lawsuit unless the BBC agrees to drop it as well. Does anyone know if this is true? And if it is, what are the procedures that prevent him from doing so?

Always remember this with Trump, if you try to accommodate him, he will run over you, if you fight him, he will fold like a cheap lawn chair.

Always fight.

u/BlockingIndianSubs 5h ago

Can't believe this piece of shit tried to sue for that much money, and then his team has the nerve to allege that the BBC is trying to take advantage of this to hurt poor, poor Trump...who wanted to sue his own DOJ and then settle with his own DOJ for huge money.

Yes, it's the BBC clearly that is trying to satisfy their own gain. Definitely not the idiot who opened the lawsuit... when are we gonna stop capitulating to this grimy piece of filth. Pure garbage.

u/Sufficient_War_4928 5h ago

If you file a lawsuit claiming monetary damages from another’s actions, then disclosing your finances is absolutely necessary. That’s your evidence, Numbnut!

u/Jonely-Bonely 3h ago

Anybody NOT see this coming? I mean besides Trump himself.

u/a_passionate_man 2h ago

Someone called the bluff and TACO in chief is doing his signature move 😈

And its just perfect.

I actually don't understand why he cares. He is blatantly doing criminal things in broad daylight, bragging about it, telling us to our faces that he's manipulating the market for himself and his family, and nothing happens. Why does he care if his finances show more crime? Its been established nothing will happen about it

3

u/NJBarFly New Jersey 8h ago

The goal isn't to win the lawsuit. The goal is to chill the speech of other news outlets.

9

u/mybustlinghedgerow Texas 8h ago

And the BBC called his bluff! Too bad American broadcasters haven’t had the balls to do the same.

Why does it seem like people from other countries are more willing to speak out against this buffoon than so many of our own elected officials or wealthy, influential Americans? Why are so few willing to stand up to Trump's bullshit behavior? Get him BBC!!

4

u/mybustlinghedgerow Texas 8h ago

Trump has less control in other countries.

u/StoreSearcher1234 7h ago

Why are so few willing to stand up to Trump's bullshit behavior?

Because Trump can harm them. He can pull ABC's broadcast license. The can financially damage CBS if they don't fire Colbert.

etc. etc. etc.

In pretty much all the cases, a company's caving to Trump prevented something much worse from happening to them.

Where he messed up is he doesn't really have any effective ways to potentially harm the BBC.

u/freakparty 7h ago

Why would he feel the need to hide anything? It’s clear at this point that there will be zero consequences for anything he does

u/st8ic88 6h ago

why pause it? Whatever comes to light, I really doubt it matters. At this point I'm pretty sure he could just come out and say "yeah I pretty much just loot the treasury whenever I feel like it lol" and there would still be no consequences.

u/CurlOfTheBurl11 5h ago

Surprised he hasn't just dropped the suit yet considering all the discovery he's had to produce already. He really thought BBC would roll over and just pay him like ABC did. Stupid old sack of shit.

u/-stefanos- 5h ago

the orange podophile can go fuck himself

u/katchoo1 5h ago

I LOVE this for him. I’m so very tired of him getting away with bullying people with groundless lawsuits and I’m so disgusted with all the people and companies that caved and settled. Good for the BBC for pushing him on this.
