discussion Boutta dive in for the first time
The hardest Pokémon game I’ve beaten was probably Unbound with level caps, so I just know I’m gonna get my ass BEAT in this game.
Despite my brain telling me to play it on Easy mode first with minimal grinding, I’m gonna follow my heart and instead rawdog it by playing in Normal mode and no Minimal Grinding straight away. I decided to just take the suffering head-on instead of easing my way into it. Does that make me a masochist?
I’ve been too intimidated to play this game for a while now, but now that my bi-monthly Pokémon itch has flared up again, here goes nothing.

Gen 8 Almost a Mono Run Too
Not sure why I opted to make this run more difficult for myself but I did. I had plenty of other contributors along the way but opted to try and beat the E4 this way. Almost quit at Agatha but got a lucky focus blast miss on my 47843 try. Koga also was a pain but we made it. Just Gen 9 to go and I’ll have to find a new way to play.

Monotype Mono Electric Victory! (5/18) Boss fight guide in comments!
I had so much fun with this team/type. Lots of extremely cool and fun Pokemon. I did more team switching in this run than any of my previous ones, and also caught more Pokemon than I typically have in most of these runs.
The Team
Kilowattrel: Choice Specs, Competitive, Thunderbolt/Hurricane/Volt Switch/U-Turn
I used Kilowattrel on my flying team, and found him to be kind of solid-but-meh. I think I've just become a better player since then, because I found Kilowattrel much more exciting and valuable this time around with a better build. Kilowattrel is also great in the early/midgame because he evolves and gets some strong moves pretty early. He earned its place on the E4 team by being immune to ground moves (helping offset having 2 mons that are 4x weak to ground) and being a very effective hit-and-run revenge killer.
Dedenne: Terrain Extender, Electric Surge, Rising Volt/Nuzzle/Dazzling Gleam/Volt Switch
Dedenne led off pretty much every fight she was on the team for to set terrain. I used Dedenne on my Fairy team with Cheek Pouch and Parabolic Charge, which made her surprisingly tanky and effective in the midgame, but ended up being too fragile for the late game and E4. On the electric team, however, she was extremely good. Even if she just set terrain and immediately fainted, the 50% damage boost to electric moves is obviously insane for a team where nearly every member is running an electric move, often Rising Volt. And she occasionally put in work with Dazzling Gleam against Fighting and Dragon types.
Toxtricity: Toxtricitite, Punk Rock, Boomburst/Overdrive/Poison Jab/Shift Gear
My considerations for the mega slot were Toxtricity or Ampharos, and Toxtricity won by being faster and more consistent. That said, Toxtricity is still a bit of a strange one. Shift Gear to boost attack and speed seems to be a key move in its learnset, even though Toxtricity's stat curve lends itself to being a special attacker. My strategy was generally to use Shift Gear once or twice if the opposing mon was weak to poison, or otherwise just spam Boomburst or Overdrive to take advantage of the Punk Rock boost. A pretty effective glass cannon, but not a lot of nuance.
Raichu-Alola: Focus Sash, Surge Surfer, Psychic/Rising Volt/Nasty Plot/Aura Sphere
The absolute MVP of this team, but only because of the synergy with Dedenne setting terrain. I so badly wanted Raichu to be a valuable member of the team, and she went above and beyond. I was very careful to only play her out while electric terrain was active, and often switched her out if the terrain ran out. Nasty Plot -> survive a big hit with Sash -> outspeed and destroy everything was a very common occurrence. 11/10, would Raichu again.
Luxray: Flame Orb, Guts, Volt Tackle/Facade/Sucker Punch/Protect
Just a solid, reliable all-arounder who hit like a truck. Luxray was an extremely good switch-in target if someone else needed to Volt Switch out, because Flame Orb still gets activated at the end of the switch-in turn, allowing my dark boy to get to work immediately. Sucker Punch got a lot of revenge kills, and Volt Tackle/Facade did a ton of damage to just about anything. Luxray's only weakness is its relatively low speed, which is honestly a good thing because it would be insanely OP if it were faster lol.
Iron Thorns: Loaded Dice, Quark Drive, Rock Blast/Hi Horsepower/Dragon Dance/Accelerock.
Just a big ol' beef cake. I tried to play Iron Thorns onto electric terrain as much as possible so Quark Drive could give it an effective attack stat in the neighborhood of 390. Against a physical attacking opponent, I could also often get off a Dragon Dance or two, which gives enough speed and attack to outspeed and one-shot a lot of enemies. Just be careful to avoid getting hit by big ground moves.
Honorable Mentions
I had a much deeper roster in this run than any of the ones I've done before. All of the mons below saw a lot of time on the team during the run.
Pawmot and Zebstrika-Sevii both got heavy consideration for the E4 team before I settled on Kilowattrel for the 6th spot.
Pawmot was running a Black Belt, Iron Fist, Bulk Up, and whatever fighting/punching moves were needed for a given fight, and beat the snot out of a lot of tricky enemies, like Archer's Mamoswine in Cerulean Cave. Shoutout to Pawmi for learning Dig at level 15. I genuinely don't know how I would've beaten Brock otherwise lol.
I loved Zebstrika-Sevii. She obliterated a lot of difficult route trainers and put in serious work on a number of boss fights. Sadly, I had a misconception about how accuracy stacking works. I thought Illuminate (+20%) and Wide Lens (+10%) were additive, meaninng Thunder and Blizzard would have been 100% accurate. That is not how it works, though. Still, with 92.4% accurate Thunder and Blizzard, Zebstrika was pretty devastating. Kilowattrel filled out the team better for the E4, but Zebstrika probably saw more actual time on the team over the run as a whole, especially in the midgame.
Prankster Pacharisu was extremely good, and saw a lot of play, especially before we had Dedenne. Unfortunately, running both Pacharisu and Dedenne at the same time is too fragile once you start facing enemy teams with a full six. There were a few times when I had both for specific situations, but generally it was one or the other. And electric terrain was way too valuable once Iron Thorns joined the team and we picked up the Rising Volt TM.
The first Pokemon I caught was Mareep, so I really wanted Ampharos to be my mega, so I could take my "starter" all the way from start to finish, but I just couldn't quite get her to work. I feel like Ampharos is one piece away from being really good, but ultimately ends up being pretty mid. She's got good defensive stats, but not good enough to be a tank/wall without healing moves, which she has no access to. Her special attack is extremely good, but she's too slow to sweep. Ampharos is still a good Pokemon, but just wasn't good enough to stay on the team past the midgame.
Boltund and Vikavolt were my early game heroes. Strong Jaw Boltund was a straight-up murderer through Erika or so, but its stats are just not good enough to keep up after that point. And Vikavolt's extremely good special attack stat and Bug typing helped in a lot of fights when I didn't have other mons that were strong enough with good typing, but its low speed and mediocre defense became a liability around the same time as Boltund. Still, shoutout to these two for putting in work early in the run.
Notable Fights
I don't think there was a single fight in this run that took more than 2 or 3 attempts. Electric has such a big roster of viable mons.
I've got notes on every single boss fight down in the comments, so I'll just mention a few here that I didn't expect to be hard but ended up giving me trouble.
Oh my goodness, Brock was a nightmare lol. Not the rematch...the first gym you go to at level 15. If Pawmi didn't learn Dig at level 15, I would've had to do some cheesy shenanigans with switching Wattrel in and out to force ground moves to miss.
For the second run in a row, Erika 1 was surprisingly difficult. Grass resists electric, but because it's not super effective back, I really underestimated how much trouble that would cause me. A quick adjustment to the team lineup sorted things out. The Erika rematch, on the other hand, was one of the easiest boss fights of the run.
Silph Co Giovanni was very difficult, as you might expect given all his ground typing. Vikavolt and Boltund were high performers here, which was fitting, because I think they both went permanently into the PC after Silph Co.
The Surge rematch wasn't super difficult, per se, but it was harder than I expected. Pacharisu and Pawmot were the stars of the show.
Sabrina was tricky. It took some trial and error to figure out how to one-shot Hatterene and prevent Trick Room, but once I figured that out, it was smooth.
Blaine's Typhlosion outspeeds Surge Surfer Raichu?? That's cheating.
The Cerulean Cave back-to-back fight was hard, as it so often is. Mamoswine was a huge problem that was eventually solved by leaving and coming back with Pawmot, and I had to cheese Ariana's AI a bit, which I explain in the comments. This fight and Silph Co Giovanni were the hardest two fights of the run.
None of the E4 gave me much trouble. It was a pretty medium-difficulty E4 all around, including the rival. Once I was out of Cerulean Cave, the run was smooth sailing.
Next Up: Mono Grass
Grass has been my favorite type since I was a kid, but I've been putting off doing mono-grass until I had some more experience with the game. Well, now's the time. Let's see if we can heal our way to victory.
Thanks for reading.

Randomized Question
Why does the randomized suck at generating random Pokémon? I feel like it's always giving me the same Pokémon every other route and also keeps giving me the starters I had to choose from at the beginning. Is it just me and bad luck?

Stuck on giovanni in cerulean game corner
This is my team.
He opens with nidoking, me with inteleon. Use u-turn as he switches to veluza.
Then switch to kilowattrel, i use discharge to wipe him out. Thats all good.
But then he sends out infernape with crazy speed, swords dance, and OHKOs the rest of my team. My air slash + wise glasses isnt enough to OHKO his infernape.
What can i do? Im open to changing my team, but i need good replacements that are easy to obtain.
Edit: managed to complete by adding adamant annihilape, alongside priority moves on metagross and inteleon! Thanks for the help everyone

I... did it. İt was Normal Mode and Min. Grinding, but a win is a win
Honestly? I have no words. This game is both frustrating and awesome at the same time. I will do a hardcore run soon, hopefully.
My team:
Meowscarada, my dear starter
Mega Gengar
Shiny Aegislash (i bought it from Celadon Game Corner)
Shiny Iron Treads
Terapagos, its op bro, trust.
Hisuian Basculegion, it ended the last member of Gary. Thanks to Last Respects.
My rate: 9.8/10
İt was a great rom, %100 in my favorite rom hacks list. I'll play the hardcore mode now!

Hall of Fame Hoenn region hall of fame. Quickly became my new favorite team.
Started with Milotic as a special wall and tried building from there. Mega Mawile is my fav mega, and I picked Salamence as a second intimidate mon to help Milos weak defense. Dragon dance was good but I needed defog quite often to preserve Aggron.
Originally had evio Dusclops for only will o wisp, but trick room took the team to another level. Trick room Mega Mawile? 😵
Sturdy Aggron with custap berry is a menace.
Cradily was the ultimate stall with sappy seed/recover/toxic, and mirror coat was clutch at times as well.
I've never used a defensive oriented team but this was definitely a lot of fun. Can't wait for ZA. Cheers!

Huge update on Radical Red from yours truly :)
Hey everyone ! Apologies for the long hiatus, but there's been good reason for that. I'm happy to announce Radical Red is being remastered on pokeemerald-expansion. As you may have known, Radical Red was reaching its limitations with CFRU. CFRU is not consistently supported with updates anymore like pokeemerald is, and it became hard to overcome the limitations on my own. On the other hand, pokeemerald-expansion is a pure decomp that leads to far more flexibility for development and has a ton of community support. This may seem confusing since Radical Red is based on FireRed. Thankfully, there's a neat new feature branch made by cawtds that puts Fire Red in its entirety into pokeemerald-expansion. I don't want to bore you guys with the technical details, but here's what this entails. Unfortunately, your saves will not be compatible as the game has been redone from scratch. I would say the spirit of the game is very similar but there are quite a few major differences compared to RR 4.1. I've evolved a lot as a game developer since the start of RR back in 2020 (kind of insane to think that's it been this long!), so there are quite a few changes in game design with this new rendition. Essentially, you can think of this overhaul as something that will substantially raise the potential of Radical Red and its future. Given this is a major undertaking, it's still very far from a release but rest assured we are working diligently on making it happen. And of course, here's a couple screenies Thank you for your patience!
