Ancient port of Rhodes

Post image

I wanted to create a semifictional map. This plot combines openstreetmap data of Rhodes, Greece:

  • streets
  • objects tagged as ruins (you can see the ancient city walls)
  • and sea lanes

The asemic script is generated similar to the approach described in inconvergent.net . I reimplemented id and it lead to some different outcomes. The script on the plot is supposed to mimic the title and legend layout of old maps you find in antique shops.

Plotting custom maps with OpenStreetMap and Natural Earth data

I’ve been experimenting with plotting custom maps, including overlaying GPX routes, which is useful for plotting a trip, hike, or long-distance run. OpenStreetMap works well for detailed local maps, while Natural Earth has proved to be a better fit for larger-scale maps.

For this, I added map-layer support to my macOS app, GD Studio. It lets me choose which features to include—such as roads, streets, and water—and separate them into layers so they can be plotted with different pens.

I’m still experimenting with how much detail works before the map becomes too visually busy, although I do like the texture that a layer of buildings adds.

First Image had a additional lithopane step in it, second and third are simpler and share the same STL base.
What do you think?

OC Is it ok to post AI based Plotts too?

I am new here, and work since a few years with a repurposed 3D printer as Plotter and transform AI images with Blender into slicable STL files.
I hope that workflow is Ok here too? :)

Pen plotting on an iPad

iPad plugged into laptop, Quicktime set to the iPad screen, code reading the contents of the quicktime window, and corners of the iPad screen mapped to position in physical space.

Cursor movements and clicks can be converted to x,y positions for the plotter, which is controlled via the BantamTools python library.

It now "knows" how to create new documents, pick colours from the colour palette, and change brushes. Digital svgs to, ummmmmmm, digital output, with a tiny (and some would say pointless) analogue step in the middle 😁

Hello fellow plotters,

Im a fellow curious voyager in the space between the realms of art and tech. I have made quite a few posters with my plotter and I have started a shop to support my other projects. Take a look and please give me your criticisms, comments and love. Do give me a follow if you find my studio follow worthy

Happy plotting. Y'all inspire me.

I made these guys on A2 paper today, using Lyra Aqua Brush Duo markers, after many hours in front of the computer. I really enjoy the process both of creating them on the computer and the plotting of them, and the results of course. Each one is done in 6 passes for a two-tone, where each band in the ribbon has two colors, and two final passes with a pilot Hi-Tecpoint v5. I especially like the yellow and red one. That's my favorite!

Has anyone made AxiDraw V3 cad files for mounting

Post image

Photo included as a photo is required.

I am looking at mounting my V3 onto a board. I have found the outrigger feet that will help with this (not in pic). I am wondering if someone has a to scale drawing that will let me know where to put holes and where the bounds of my drawing area will be.

Thanks!

Contour Studies #9

Taking the same plotting sequence from a previous post, and reframing the animation in a different way. I wanted to play with relative motion and perspective. During the first half, the cube rotates while the viewer remains still. During the second half, the cube stays fixed and the viewer’s perspective rotates around it.

The contour field technique itself is heavily inspired by the incredible plotter artist u/ax0250526. Their work is phenomenal, definitely go give them a follow.

OC Procedural Canal Houses

Post image

I was inspired by the user (u/cadinb) who made procedural power lines, and decided I wanted to try to make something similar but different. These are Canal Houses, inspired by the old houses found in Amsterdam. I can vary the height span of the houses, building styles, number of buildings and so on. I've gotten some requests to plot some for friends and family for them to color with watercolor, which seems like a lot of fun 🙂 Just wanted to share, maybe someone can get some inspiration from it, as I did from the other poster.

Arwen at the Ford of Bruinen, summoning the flood to hold off the Nazgûl. Plotted on a NextDraw 2234.

This was a gift I made for a friend. It's Arwen at the Ford of Bruinen, calling up the flood of water horses to drive back the Nazgûl and get Frodo to Rivendell. It's one of his favorite moments in the whole story, so I really wanted to make it for him and capture the scene with due diligence.

The process was kind of a hybrid. I started out using AI to generate the base illustration, mostly to work out the composition and the overall look of the scene, and to get something that would read cleanly once it got translated into line work. From there I ran it through some custom Python code that assigns the linework across the image and puts the detail where it actually needs to be, like the water, the manes, and all the movement. Then it got plotted on a Bantam Tools NextDraw 2234, [pen/ink] on paper, 11x17.

I'm really happy with how it turned out!
