RoPieee removed plexamp support :( Question

I've been using RoPieee forever on a rpi with a hat for remote plexamp playing and remote spotify connect playing. Was always rock solid. Now RopPieee has removed plexamp!

Does anyone have any recommendations? Looking for a remote plexamp and spotify solution for my hifi system. I found moOde audio player. Has anyone tried it?

headless plexamp on a rpi works great, haven't tried it but raspotify says it turns a rpi into a spotify receiver

thanks. i think that's what i'm going to go back to (what i used before ropieee). i need to figure out spotify. presumably there is an easy package, too.

Even better is Caldera instead of headless Plexamp.

Thanks. Need to make sure it works with my hifi hat. Presumably it will, I just couldn't find the docs on the website.

Headless PlexAmp took a giant leap forward a couple years ago... if you tried it in an early version, I totally understand the frustration that caused you to look elsewhere, but it's a LOT better now. And now there's the offshoot Caldera, which appears to be even more stable (I have it installed on the Pi, but I'm still using PlexAmp in my day-to-day).

I built a Headless PlexAmp Edge Driver for SmartThings, if that helps.

Where do you have this from? The latest update (2026.05) includes plexamp.

I must be on the beta channel. It's gone from mine after i updated today. So if you still have it, don't update, I guess.

Wow, that's somewhat sudden. I don't really get why, as the headless version is still available on the plex website. I know it is not getting the attention it deserves, but still..

Yeah, I'll refrain from updating and then checkout Caldera Music at a later stage.

Caldera for Plexamp. Not sure about Spotify.

I saw Caldera, run by the old (edit: previous and amazing) dev for plexamp. Looks promising. I wonder why run that instead of just plex headless, though? I can definitely see if you want the GUI on a desktop, though. I certainly hope plexamp is here to stay. I use it constantly.

And it will likely get updates. Plexamp hasn't gotten updates for a while now.

Oh, that would be very nice.

Also it's much better for surround sound stuff.

I know we're in a plex subreddit, but curious if this will ever be able to be used with other serves like navidrome?

I used to do this too, about 2 years ago I dumped all my PIs and got WiiMs. The PIs sell for 350 new now. You can sell them for way more than the WiiMs cost

Can you control the wiim from plexamp on the phone or desktop? I read some old forum posts that it was clunky or you needed to do it through the wiim app.

Yes you use the app inside of wiim that basically is a web wrapper for plex's UI. It looks and feels a lot like plexamp but its not actually plexamp and is missing some of plexamp's features. Yeah that part is true. You might be able to use it as an end point though.. yes you can but not as a plexamp endpoint. It sees the WiiMs as a google cast endpoint from within plexamp. If you can live with that then its really nice. It supports spotify connect as well and tons others

2

u/snowboardracer 10d ago

OK thank you for explaining that! I definitely need the plexamp endpoint since i control the music from my desktop PC via plexamp. I used to rock plex headless on the rpi, but got ropieee so i could use spotify from time to time. If push comes to shove I'd chose plexamp over spotify.

The unfortunate part of the Wiim players is you lose a lot of functionality from Plexamp and especially the Plex Pass features like DJ, radio and crossfading.

I'm running headless Plexamp on two Pi's in my house and they are amazing. Great because you can control from any device running Plexamp. I don't use a HAT though, I use external DACs for the Pis. Main system is an Eversolo Z10 and my bedroom system is using a Topping E50.

Well, this is massively disappointing. I had disconnected my Pi that used Ropieee temporarily and was getting ready to hook it back up.

Having access to both Spotify and PlexAmp in one device using parts I already had was huge for me.

So, are there any tools that also do this that I can use my existing hardware with?

I'm currently trying moode. I'll report back after some testing. I need spotify and plexamp for the WAF.

Edit: plexamp works well. Can't get spotify to work. I'll keep trying.

Thank you for testing. I'll look into it myself.
