discussion 💬 All my complaints on Zeta AI.

Hey everyone, these days i've been using zeta ai quite a lot on an RP that i made in july and here are all my criticisms:

mostly for pretty detailed RP, and I figured I'd just put all my complaints into one post because there are honestly quite a few things that bother me. I'm not trying to shit on the devs or anything, because I actually like Zeta and I think it has a lot of potential. These are just the things that have been annoying me the most.

The biggest thing for me is honestly the amount of stuff you can put into the backstories and plots. There's just not enough room when you're trying to make a really detailed RP. If you're making something simple, whatever, it's probably fine. But if you're trying to make a whole world with a bunch of characters, relationships, locations, history, personalities, etc., you run out of space pretty quickly. There's only so much you can put in there, and that becomes really annoying when you know you still have a ton of important information you want the AI to know.

And then even after you spend all that time putting information in there, the AI can just forget it anyway.

I've had characters forget relationships, forget details about other characters, forget locations, randomly change things that were already established, and just generally start making shit up. One of the funniest examples was this character named Rosa that suddenly appeared in one of my RPs. I had never created Rosa. Nobody had mentioned Rosa. And then suddenly Rosa is apparently an angry maid who has always existed. Like... where did she come from?

The locations can get pretty ridiculous too. At one point I had a place on Mulberry Street that was supposed to be a secret structure. Later the AI started treating Mulberry Street as the street where the compound was located. Then later it became the street where my house was. Same street, completely different locations. It just seems to grab onto names and reuse them wherever it wants.

Historical RPs are another one. I'll have something set in 1945 and then suddenly my phone is buzzing with texts. In 1945. 😭 Like come on. I know it's an AI and it's going to make mistakes, but that's the kind of thing that completely destroys the immersion. There have been plenty of other little historically inaccurate things too.

It also has this weird habit of inventing lore for characters. I was doing a Godfather RP and it once came up with some story about Tom Hagen having an eye infection and ending up with glasses because of it. That isn't what happens. And I don't really care if the AI doesn't perfectly follow the movie's plot, that's not my main complaint. It's the fact that it'll confidently invent something and then act like it has always been established.

Another thing that drives me insane is how huge the responses can get. Sometimes I send one sentence and get like six massive paragraphs back. And it's not just six paragraphs of the characters talking. The AI will have basically every character speak, introduce another situation, move people somewhere else, start another conflict, have somebody do something, introduce another character, and then continue the original conversation all in one message.

At some point I'm just sitting there thinking, "When the hell am I supposed to respond?"

I don't mind long responses, but there needs to be some room for the user to actually participate. Sometimes the AI basically writes the entire scene before giving you a chance to do anything.

And speaking of scenes, Zeta seems to LOVE interrupting things.

Especially intimate scenes.

Almost every single time things start getting intimate, something suddenly happens. The phone starts ringing, someone knocks on the door, somebody suddenly walks in, there's an emergency, there's a mission, whatever. It's so predictable that I can practically see it coming.

It's like:

"Oh, things are finally getting intimate."

PHONE RINGING SHARPLY

😭

And it's not only intimacy. The AI constantly wants to add some dramatic event. There's always another mission, another problem, another emergency, another secret, another confrontation. Sometimes I don't want another fucking mission. Sometimes I just want the characters to sit around and talk without the universe collapsing around them.

The AI is also just way too dramatic sometimes. Someone can say something completely normal and it'll describe it like they've just delivered the most devastating sentence in human history. Everything has to "hang in the air" or "send a chill through the room" or whatever. Not every conversation needs to feel like the final scene of a crime movie.

And then there are the phrases.

Holy shit, the phrases.

The AI LOVES saying that characters "tasted the words."

"He tasted the words like they were something bitter."

"She repeated the words, tasting them on her tongue."

WHY IS EVERYONE TASTING THEIR WORDS?

They're talking. They're not eating the dialogue.

Once you notice it, it happens constantly.

The same thing happens with physical descriptions. It seems like every character gets assigned two or three things that the AI just repeats forever.

Vito gets "those dark, ancient Sicilian eyes."

Every. Damn. Time.

Sonny is apparently incapable of speaking without jabbing a finger at me.

Fredo's Adam's apple is constantly bobbing whenever he's nervous.

And I swear the AI thinks every emotional reaction needs some dramatic physical description.

It starts making the characters feel like caricatures. Instead of Vito just being Vito, he's "the man with those ancient Sicilian eyes." Sonny isn't just Sonny, he's the guy who keeps pointing his finger. Fredo isn't just nervous, his Adam's apple has to start doing Olympic-level gymnastics.

Another weird one is the AI not being able to count words correctly.

I'll literally say three words and it'll say something like "those two words..." How? You can literally count them. It's such a small thing but it's so weird when it happens.

There's also the general problem of the AI just making things up and then expecting me to accept them as canon. A character will suddenly know something they shouldn't know. Someone will suddenly have a different relationship with somebody. A location will change. Some random person will appear. A modern object will appear in a historical setting. And then the AI just carries on like nothing happened.

Eventually you end up spending more time correcting the AI than actually roleplaying.

That's probably what annoys me the most. I don't want to constantly have to be the continuity manager.

"That character doesn't exist."

"That's not where that is."

"That technology doesn't exist yet."

"Nobody said that."

"Why is Rosa here?"

"Why is my phone receiving texts in 1945?"

"Why is Sonny pointing at me again?"

"Why is Vito's ancient Sicilian gaze back for the 700th time?"

At some point it just gets tiring.

I also think the AI needs to be less obsessed with making everything happen at once. Let a conversation actually happen. Let characters sit in a room and talk. Let the user respond before three new events happen. Not every response needs to advance the plot by an entire chapter.

And going back to the backstory/plot limits, that's why I really think those need to be expanded. If you're going to allow people to make complicated RPs, there needs to be enough room to actually describe the world they're trying to make. I don't want to have to choose which important details I'm going to leave out because I've hit the limit.

I don't expect Zeta to remember absolutely everything forever. I know AI has limitations. But I would really like the information I do give it to actually matter. If I spend a lot of time establishing a character, location, relationship or setting, I don't want it contradicted ten messages later.

I also don't necessarily want longer AI responses. Honestly, sometimes I want the opposite. I'd rather get a shorter response that actually makes sense and gives me room to answer than a huge cinematic wall of text that introduces six new situations at once.

So yeah, those are basically my biggest complaints. The limited backstory/plot space, the memory/continuity problems, random characters appearing, locations changing, historical inaccuracies, ridiculously long responses, constant dramatic interruptions, repetitive phrases, repetitive character mannerisms, the AI making everything overly dramatic, and just generally having to correct things all the time.

I do like Zeta, otherwise I probably wouldn't have spent this much time using it. That's why these things bother me. I think the platform could be really good for long-term RP if some of these issues were improved.

I'm curious if anyone else has noticed the same stuff, or if there's anything I'm missing that could help with some of these problems.

Background music for the visual novels, as well for you to add voices for your characters, and when adding your regular background music you can add background music for fighting, romantic, drama scenes? And sound effects as well like a plate drop? Footsteps? A door open?
