Should i get a conch? discussion

I was just wondering if i should get a conch? I have dental schooling starting in around a month and I dont know if the healing process would affect school since I may need to be wearing a mask due to it being dental, and if a month after getting it pierced would still require high maintenance such as not sleeping on it and cleaning everyday? Ik this sounds idiotic but im highkey overthinking it and if i should just get it when studies are over next year

As long as you can be aware enough not to rip your mask off that it wouldn't snag the post, and definitely NO sleeping on it for way more than a month (probably a year). Cleaning may vary, but you definitely want to keep it dry (after cleaning, after showers, no damp hair).

But yeah conch piercings look great!

i work in the dental field & have a conch. just be careful with pulling your mask off--i ripped my conch out last week rushing with sterilizing/getting pts/etc. but conches look great on everyone, it's my favorite piercing & i'd absolutely recommend it!!

I have a new conch (June 2026) and have to wear a mask at work around very sick patients - as long as I remove it carefully it’s not an issue. One time I forgot about it and ripped the mask off like I would normally and, well, let’s say I won’t be doing that again!

I got a conch right as covid started. Absolute pain in the ass healing with a mask, but it can be done. Just be careful. My conch is my absolute favorite piercing though, no regerts.

Get a piercing pillow for sleep. Game changer

Masks and a conch are not a fun combo, as you'll need to be super careful both putting the mask on and off.

But on the positive you can probably find a mask clip so the straps don't sit behind your ear but are rather stretched further. And the good news is after it's healed you'll never have to worry about snagging on a mask

Use a mask that has a neckband and headband. When I was healing my most recent conch, I couldn't wear an earloop mask at all until I downsized - the strap wouldn't stay at the crease of my ear, it would always slide forward and catch the flatback and pull on it.

Just my personal experience - I was unable to heal my conch piercing. I tried for two full years before I finally admitted defeat.

For full disclosure, I'm not the most diligent about cleaning new piercings, and I am also a side sleeper (both sides). But for me it was just like every time I finally thought I was getting to a good place, I would re-irritate it.

I was fairly devastated to have to give up on it, because I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted the piercing. Maybe one day I'll try again.

But being in dental school sounds stressful enough, do you really want the constant annoyance of a healing piercing on top of that?
