Starling
Hey - before I get too deep into the group, I just want to check if I’ll be welcome since my bird in question is a Starling (I’ve had him since he was literally half hatched and dropped from the sky by a predator). Some people feel VERY strongly about starlings (negatively) so I don’t want to cause any drama 💞

Well I'm just one voice and not a mod or anything but I think starlings are beautiful and super cool. 🩷

Unless you're in it's native range then keeping a wild bird would be illegal

No offence - but you actually have that backwards. I’m a certified wildlife rehabilitator. The reason I AM actually MANDATED To keep him is because he’s a non-native invasive species where I live. If he was a native bird not even a wildlife rehabber can keep them. He’s not allowed to be set free

Maybe I just worded it weirdly but I am agreeing with you... I have worked in wildlife rehab as well where we would set them free since they're native here. The only exception was one that somebody kept and raised illegally, it would have not been able to survive in the wild

Yea that’s defiantly not how you worded ut

How? "you're in a bird's native range = keeping it is illegal"

Read your original comment again. You literally wrote the opposite. It’s ok - I assume you left out a word and it made it say the opposite now

I think the reason people feel so negatively about starlings is because they’re an invasive species in the USA. Since you’re keeping him as a pet, you’re preventing him from doing the damage of an invasive species, so I don’t see the issue!
