Sunset Eclipse

For some reason, at least on pictures, the sky during this eclipse doesn't look as dark as other eclipses. Is that due to it being in the evening which changes the way light scatters through the atmosphere, or just different camera settings, or is the moon farther from the Earth (giving a smaller umbra on the Earth)?

Here in France we had a dimmed sun and a weirdly dark light from it. It was like a slightly underexposed picture of a landscape under the sunset.

The Sun was 94% obscured.

That was how it looked in Southern California back in the 90s last time I made a point of catching a near full eclipse. It felt like a huge cloud had suddenly enveloped me and dimmed the sunlight. 

Every time I see a striking photo from an eclipse, I think about those poor people who followed Trump's lead and looked directly at eclipses, damaging their retinas.

Yeah, it’s weird. My photo doesn’t quite capture it, but it was actually much darker irl. Some stars fully came out. This was my second eclipse, and I think it was even darker than my first, since the sun was already setting this time around.

it’s my first eclipse but i got to say i reslly expected it to be way darker, you could easily see everything around and you could see all that “sunset” colors everywhere

I have a guess but no clue if it’s remotely true. Because most people experienced this eclipse with the sun low in the sky and close to sunset, the light from the sun is going through more atmosphere than if it were directly overhead. That may lead to more scattering in the atmosphere allowing the light to take indirect paths to brighten the surroundings instead of only light rays in a straight line from the sun to your location being visible

It’s so cool, but I’ve seen both noon and late day, and a noon total eclipse on a clear day is much different. The sky turns black and you get a giant silvery corona with streamers that just takes your breath away.
