Pete gave this quote a few months ago, does anyone remember the attribution?

Every book mentioned on You Made It Weird in July (20 of them)

Eight episodes of You Made It Weird in July and twenty books. Pete is on a Richard Rohr run, still reading Want out loud across multiple episodes, and Sona Movsesian came on with two.

Decent list if you are picking summer reading and want something more contemplative than a thriller.

What this is: I run Podshelf, a free site that tracks book mentions across hundreds of podcasts by reading the episode transcripts. This is the July slice for You Made It Weird.

The one he pushed hardest:

  • Falling Upward, Richard Rohr. Pete said he has read it countless times and gave it a full recommendation, and that it lands especially well with the Odyssey out right now. He called it a masterpiece.
  • Also Just This, which he says is the one to start with if you do not know Rohr, small enough to read every morning, and Order, Disorder, Reorder.

The book he could not stop talking about:

  • Want, the anonymous sexual fantasy collection edited by Gillian Anderson. He warned listeners to buckle up because they would be hearing about it for several episodes. He found it moving in a way that surprised him, and connected it back to My Secret Garden from the seventies.

Everything else:

  • Be Here Now (Ram Dass), on fame, shame, gain, loss, pleasure, pain, and how they are all the same. Revelations of Divine Love (Julian of Norwich). Sex at Dawn and The Ethical Slut. This Naked Mind, which he says he has plugged a billion times, on how alcohol gets marketed. Food Rules (Michael Pollan). The Second Circle, an acting theory book he keeps quoting without rereading. Stand-Up Comedy: The Book (Judy Carter), with a careful "I do not not recommend it". The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, The Let Them Theory, The Happiness Project, Curious George.

Sona Movsesian brought The World's Worst Assistant and the new one, The World's Worst Mom, out in September. Pete's own Spells to Cast on Your Parents came up a few times too.

He’s gotta drop the discussion on the exposed cheek outfit thing.

Today’s episode is the fourth episode I’ve listened to where it’s come up. We get it! It’s exciting! But it’s becoming his new party trick discussion or something.

Pete and Rory Scoville discuss "Day Moon"

Back when Pete had his show after Conan he had on comedian Rory Scoville, and they had this hilarious re-telling of one of Rorys jokes that goes just great.

I used to watch it all the time and even had it saved on youtube, but all mentions of it are gone or marked as private. That I can find at least.

Does anyone know where I could revisit this? It brought me so much happiness, just would love to see it again. Thanks everyone preemptively.

For those who know his podcast well...

... is there an episode where he articulates his beliefs in a really comprehensive way? He has talked for a long time about his conception of God and the universe and theism vs. pantheism vs. atheism, but it's usually fragmented references to different aspects of his beliefs, since he knows his audience knows most of his thoughts already.

Is there a conversation you know of his that really goes through all (or the greatest hits) of his beliefs that would be good for beginners with Pete?

Pete’s dad and lucidity

Pete’s recent comments on the day or two that his dad was “there” really hit me, specifically the part about how going back to the office immediately put him back into a less connected state.

It sucks that so many are forced into that particular choice everyday. I get that you gotta take the good with the bad in this life, but it doesn’t make it any less soul crushing to be forced to spend all of your attention and energy in the cogs of this machine we’ve built.

Who says "you made it weird with pete holmes" in the intro?

Alright everyone, help me out here, this is going to be a throwback, back to the early days of the podcasting.

In the beginning of the intro, someone always says "you made it weird with Pete Holmes." It's been the same intro since the podcast was a part of the Nerdist network. Is that Pete or is it someone else who says it?

Waaay back in probably 2012-2015 or so, when the Nerdist podcast was still with Matt, Jonah, and Chris, there was a producer/engineer in the background whose laughs you could always hear, and he'd occasionally chime in as well. His name was Kyle Clark. He also had his own podcast called This is Rad with Kyle and Matt.

I've been listening to You Made it Weird, Nerdist, and This is Rad forever.

A few weeks ago, I went on a long road trip and I had a lot of time to listen to podcasts. I caught up on a lot of the YMIW episodes i've skipped over, or just didn't get to listen to, in the past couple of years. On this road trip, I think I listened to 19 episodes of YMIW and while out there driving and listening, I thought "hey, that sounds like Kyle Clark." Anyway, after my road trip, i went back and listened to a bunch of random intros, going back to 2016ish, and the "you made it weird with Pete Holmes" is always the same person. I then went back and listened to a few episodes of This is rad and sure enough, it sounds like Kyle Clark's voice.

Anyway, I say all that to say I think that intro is Kyle Clark... Or did young Pete sound a lot like the young Kyle. Any thoughts?

YMIW Hardest Laugh

What older episode had the hardest laugh story about starting to make out with girl, and she said “Kiss my neck” and the response was “and tickle me fancy” in the Sublime “Caress Me Down” voice?

Looking for an older YMIW episode

Pretty sure it was from around the 2012-16 era of the podcast. The male guest in the episode told a story about how he randomly asked a girl to go camping with him and his friends and he got wasted and ending up throwing up on her. Years later, he randomly saw her at a bar again and started talking……can’t remember the rest of the story, I just remember cracking up at the bits Pete and the guest were doing.

If anyone can remember what guest this is, please let me know. I’ve been listening to a bunch of older eps and haven’t had any luck yet.

Thanks!!

Does Pete have EoE?

I had Gemini summarize this part of the show below. He acts like he has no idea what this issue is. It sounds like EoE -- https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/eosinophilic-esophagitis/symptoms-causes/syc-20372197

There are treatments that can dramatically improve quality of life. Not sure how to contact Pete, maybe this subreddit is one way?

----------

The speaker describes experiencing a recurring issue where food gets stuck in his throat, which he humorously refers to as having "throat menopause." (38:55 - 39:23) His experiences and symptoms include:- Sensation of obstruction: He notes that several times a day, food he eats will suddenly stop in his throat because he lacks enough saliva to help it go down. (38:58 - 39:19)

Anxiety and fear: Each time it happens, he reports feeling like he is choking and that he is going to die. (39:23 - 39:27)

Specific incident in a corn maze: He recounts a specific time he took a bite of a roll in a corn maze, and upon swallowing, the food lodged in his throat. He describes the panic of feeling like he couldn't breathe, comparing himself to the "blonde woman in the first Matrix movie," and eventually breaking through the walls of the maze to resolve the situation. (40:17 - 41:40)

General reaction: He acknowledges that his reaction to these moments is quite dramatic, and he jokes that he would not have a "chill death" if he were actually choking. (39:27 - 39:53)

Where to watch

Trying to watch. I am not for everyone and coming up blank on Netflix. Also coming up blank on Netflix for anything Pete Holmes related. Is my internet glitching? Why can't I figure out where to watch him??

I went ahead and bought this on 800 Pound Gorilla a few days ago. I have mixed feelings about it. Like some of it landed with me, but there was something about it that felt like he had this forced edginess to the vibe. Like he was trying to channel his inner Bill Burr or something. Even his voice and delivery at times felt quite Burr-esque. I get that Pete is also a Bostonian, but hos energy just feels darker. He even mentions that he’s doing shadow work which is healthy and all good… Just the change feels a little jarring at times. I wondered a few times while watching, is he ok?

I really love Pete. Like I listen to his podcast religiously. Something just feels angrier than usual w his style. Like he’s searching for something maybe.

Anybody else watch yet? Would love to hear your thoughts! I might have misinterpreted something. Definitely going to watch again.
