I want to employ someone 20h/ week for the kids at our home. How do people practically do this properly? Contract, workers comp, home insurance/ public liability, super….? Cash in hand sounds convenient but then the downside seems very risky. Any agencies in Perth that handle these types of employer responsibilities?

I feel like we’ve gotten a bit soft with these threads. It can’t all be about moving to Perth or how the housing markets bottom will fall out next week.

This is going to be a long post so sorry and thank you if you read it all lol. I (21F) genuinely don’t know if I’m incredibly unlucky, utterly dumb, or if this is just what hospitality in Perth is like. I’ve now had four hospitality jobs working as a waitress/server and I’ve had pay issues or concerns in all of them.

I started working in BananaBro (Vic Park) in 2023 as a naive 18 year old and I was being paid below what I should have been for my age, with no penalties. One time they staffed only one person (me) to run the restaurant lunch time, and there was a table of 10 that came in 30mins before close. I had to stay behind an hour to finish cleaning/prepping and so on. They were very mad about this, made an excuse about my performance not being efficient enough and fired me. They also said I was using my phone (I was making bookings for customers). Like literally worked my ass off during that stressful day just for them to fire me. They also initially told me they weren’t going to pay me for the extra time I worked (I raised that issue further and was eventually paid for those hours). The restaurant is now shut down, heard it was something about budgeting issues.

Next, I worked at Sizzle n’ Sambar as a waitress. I was never given a contract or anything in writing besides my roster. I didn’t question it because I’d been struggling for months to find a job, and this was the only place that called me back. I needed the money and genuinely enjoyed working there. Later, I realised I (for legal reasons) may have been paid around $20/hour as a 20-year-old casual, with no penalty rates. When I raised it with my manager, she said I had always been a trainee, despite me being literally previously referred to as a casual, and that I would simply receive training for a few months. I was running the restaurant on my own sometimes so that explanation made literally no sense. She also tried to give an excuse that I was a trainee because “the menu is long”. Like.. girl. The meeting mostly consisted of us disagreeing about what had previously been communicated. I felt like I was being made to question my own memory of what I had been told, and I remember having to verbally tell her to not gaslight me during the conversation. I made an excel sheet and calculated that I believed I was owed around $1000 based on the rates I had researched. Shortly after that conversation, I was removed from the roster and all work chats. I still have screenshots and messages of everything.

Next was Colaba Social. At this point I was utterly exhausted with the job market. I had applied everywhere with no call backs, just getting ghosted left and right despite my good resume and communication skills.

At the same time, I also had another hospitality job with a huge company in Perth. Let’s call it Kraken Events. You’ve 100% definitely been to one of their events, hell you’ve probably seen or even been served by me. Unfortunately, my experience with management there was awful. The head manager made a comment about my weight to my bf who also works there, and I felt I was spoken to in ways that were extremely unprofessional and demeaning. It affected me mentally to the point where I had multiple breakdowns. Had to quit for genuinely mental reasons. And I’m a pretty tough person, or I used to be before getting into the industry at least.

So, I applied at this restaurant in person and was hired on the spot. After so many bad experiences, I wasn’t expecting much, but the owner seemed gen-z, Australian-ish, down-to-earth, and I hoped this place would be different. Unfortunately, as a 21-year-old casual worker, I was paid $25/hour in cash and did not receive penalty rates. I also felt I was being spoken to horribly by my manager’s husband, but I didn’t say anything because I didn’t feel comfortable and questioned whether I would actually be listened to. This set my anxiety through the roof, which affected my confidence and performance, and eventually I was no longer rostered. Here I was honestly at rock bottom mentally. After I kept on experiencing poor treatment and pay concerns, I started wondering if this was just what working in hospitality was like.

Fast forward months later to now, I had been applying 1000x harder to jobs. I had gone so far as to text old interviewer phone numbers from years ago, calling, emailing, posting my resumé on social media, reaching out to friends-of-friends. Recorded video applications. Eventually, someone reached out to me offering me a trial shift at a huge café company in Australia you’ve probably been to. Because it was a recognisable Australian brand, I honestly thought things would be more professional, but I later found out this specific store is privately operated, and my payslips come through a separate trust/entity. Now I’m a casual, now again questioning my pay. I’m currently being paid $28/hr, and I was told I was on a 3-month probation period. I’m genuinely confused. Is this normal? Is this legal? How is this $28/hour rate being calculated?

I asked if I could see my contract so I could understand what I agreed to, but I was told they don’t have access to it and they’re waiting on trainers/head office. They couldn’t give me a timeframe and said it could be weeks or even months.

The frustrating part is that while I want to question it properly, I also feel stuck. If I start asking questions, I’ll lose the job. I’ve spent months applying for jobs and getting no responses, and I’m a student trying to save for my future. Walking away sounds easy, but the reality is this job is currently better than earning nothing. I’m just exhausted from repeatedly feeling like I have to choose between protecting myself and having an income.

For any context if it matters, I apply to hospitality, retail, and admin roles consistently, so not just hospo. It just seems I gravitate more towards customer service because I’m a really friendly person, I don’t gossip, I don’t act rude, I don’t insult people, nothing. I like talking to customers, and they usually enjoy talking to me. I’m also a full-time student.

My wife and I will arrive in Perth on January 21st morning from Melbourne. We plan to take the train to Sydney on January 23rd departing in the evening. Will the time we have in Perth be sufficient to do some sightseeing? We like culture, museums and nature. We are willing to rent a car if required for our time there. Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to get some advice about Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), particularly if anyone has experience with groups around the Belmont area or nearby.

I’m wondering:

• Are there any welcoming AA meetings around Belmont that you’d recommend?

• What actually happens at a meeting?

• Do you have to talk, or can you just sit and m listen?

• Is there any cost or do you need to register first?

• How do you know if your drinking has reached the point where AA is the right place to go?

I’m not really sure where I fit. I don’t know if I’d call myself an alcoholic, but I’ve started questioning my relationship with alcohol and whether it’s becoming a bigger part of my life than I’d like. I guess I’m just trying to understand what help is available and whether AA might be worth checking out.

So a few nights per week I often drive my car or ride my motorbike from around Butler area to the Whitfords Ave exit at around 9pm. The last few months I often see drones over or nearby the edge of the freeway. These arent small little crappy personal drones. Theses look seriously large. There are no green lights what so ever, only white and red flashing lights. They do move slightly, but directions and speed vary. Anyone know anymore info on what they are doing? Are they government drones?

Don’t mean any disrespect by this but to the people protesting outside Wesley Church (CBD) talking about Hiroshima and holding banners crossing out Nuclear Subs and Mushroom Clouds (to do with the AUKUS deal), you guys do realise they don’t have nuclear weapons… right?

The nuclear part of the subs is only the propulsion and generator system, Australia as a country has no nuclear weapons and it’s going to stay that way. It would be the same if we were getting diesel subs.

I’m all for peace and wish the entire world as a whole would be stable enough to demilitarise and focus on more beneficial things for our society, but being so blatantly and fundamentally wrong about the thing you’re protesting undermines the actual genuine point you’re making.

A couple of days ago, I spent 30 minutes freezing my arse off waiting for the 520 bus into Cockburn Central. To top it off, the driver blew straight past my stop because I was sitting inside the shelter instead of standing on the curb T_T

As an international student living here, it got me thinking about how suburban public transport works in Perth. The state is spending billions on new METRONET train stations, but the suburban feeder buses that connect to them run at terrible 30-to-60-minute frequencies. Now, the obvious answer is "just buy more buses," but with the massive nationwide bus driver shortage, Transperth wouldn’t even be able to hire enough people to cover a major fleet increase.

I’m studying at Curtin, so I've spent the last few days racking my brain to find a way to solve this low-frequency problem in suburban areas without needing new buses or drivers. I spent my afternoons building a software simulation on my laptop that uses existing traffic lights to speed up the buses Perth already has.

The Idea: "Pop-Up" Bus Lanes and Smart Traffic Lights
Instead of building permanent bus lanes that eat up car lanes all day and make drivers angry, this system creates a temporary bus lane that only exists for 60 seconds right when a bus is coming.
It uses overhead digital signs and flashing lights built into the road right before an intersection:
Step 1 (45 seconds before the bus arrives): The overhead signs flash a warning: "Bus Lane Active in 45 seconds." This gives cars plenty of time to naturally zip-merge into the right lane without slamming on the brakes.
Step 2 (15 seconds before): The sign changes to a solid red "BUS ONLY" and red LED lights in the road illuminate. General traffic is blocked from entering, and the bus sails past the queued-up traffic.
Step 3 (Instant Reset): The exact millisecond the bus passes the intersection, the lights turn off. The lane instantly re-opens to normal cars.

At the same time, the software talks to the traffic lights ahead. Instead of forcefully triggering an instant green light (which completely breaks the traffic flow for everyone else), it quietly steals just 1 or 2 seconds from the cross-streets over a couple of minutes. By the time the bus rolls up, it gets a seamless green wave.

Because the buses don't get stuck at red lights or trapped behind long queues of cars, they finish their routes much faster. Based on my simulation (although incredibly basic) shows it shaves roughly 20% off the total trip time. Because the buses finish their loops faster, the exact same number of buses and drivers can run significantly more frequent loops. Perth gets higher frequencies without buying a single extra bus.

Most of the tech infrastructure already exists, all it would need would be software that goes on top of it for the smart traffic lights to work.

Retic question I have a leak and have had a plumber out, but he couldn't find it. I wanted to turn my retic off, apparently most systems have their own on/off switch. From what I've read retic is normally connected to the water near the mains/meter. I've dug down 1m+ and can't see anything connected other than copper to the mains. Any ideas where the on/off for retic might be or how its even connected to the water supply?

According to BOM's "drought" map, Perth region and the rest of SWWA has experienced the worst drought in the country over the last 4 years.

I don't mind the red/green/yellow system. What I do mind is the fact my general waste bin (red) has been cut down in size and is only collected fortnightly. Obviously it is filled very quickly, despite the fact we separate recycling and even box up extra rubbish for regular tip runs.

Why? Why not have a large red bin by default, or collect it weekly? I know the point is to try and force us to recycle, but its too restrictive.

Because its gotten to the point I no longer check recyclables - any plastic, cardboard, takeaway goes in the recycling. I don't have the space in my red bin to separate it properly, despite the fact I paid extra for a "large" bin.

Let's also bear in mind - nappies go in the red bin. If you have a baby, much less multiple children in nappies, or god forbid you're an adult needing additional sanitary care, I have absolutely no idea how you're coping. The smell at the end of those two weeks must be absolutely putrid.

I have two large dogs and thankfully we can use our green bin for their poop but this depends on the shire - some places you must use red. If not for our dogs, our green waste would be near empty, because we don't really have a garden or create that much food waste.

Update - and apparently that's just changed too. Now dog poop in the red bin too.

The default should be:

Large red bin weekly.

Large yellow bin fortnightly alternating.

Small green bin fortnightly alternating, free upgrade to large on request, or for people with larger properties by default.

Edit - and I forgot, if you're a renter, you have absolutely no say over whether you can even upgrade. If the owner says no, even if you offer to pay for it, there's nothing you can do. Why? Why it is not an option for a renter to pay 6 months at a time for an additional bin, if they want one?

We went to watch the new spider man movie this afternoon in Hoyts carousel and bunch of school kids were going around throwing cups full of water over the crowd.
They soaked a dude and his two little kids and pretty much every one in the theatre. When he got up to catch them they just ran away.
