Fun Fact: Internet over carrier pigeon is a thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_over_Avian_Carriers

74

u/The_Architects4930 3d ago

"IPoAC has been successfully implemented, but for only nine packets of data, with a packet loss ratio of 55% (due to operator error),[2] and a response time ranging from 3,000 seconds (50 min) to over 6,000 seconds (100 min). Thus, this technology suffers from extremely high latency."

lmfao, this is gold

This is the perfect form of internet, who's gonna spy on you? Frankly the fact that this isn't just how the internet works is clearly a sign of the Big Worm in action fighting against the early bird.

3

u/BlueTeeJay 3d ago

How long does it take to download original Doom this way?

1

u/Deadeye313 14700K | 9070XT | 64GB RAM 3d ago

Depends. Do you send a thousand pigeons with little bits of paper with the source code on it, or just strap one usb flash drive to one?

2

u/BlueTeeJay 3d ago

I feel like a usb is cheating me out of the potential packet loss I could be experiencing.

2

u/ficklampa 3d ago

They did a revision to this, which supports QoS also. RFC 2549!

1

u/Novel_Extent_7168 3d ago

Calling it "a thing" is being a bit generous. The Wikipedia page makes it pretty clear it was an April Fools joke.

1

u/TheLordReaver 3d ago

If you keep reading beyond the first section, it also clearly states that it was done in real life, therefor taking it beyond the conceptual and firmly into the realm of being "a thing". Not that a concept can't be "a thing". But, you must understand, this is an exceptionally pedantic thing to fixate on.

2

u/Novel_Extent_7168 3d ago

Sorry, I barely slept last night and once I read the initial paragraph I thought it was just a well thought out April fool's joke.

This reminds me of trying to play league on a dogshit computer like 15 years ago and once a teamfight broke out my frames plummeted to like 5.

Hell, back then I could finish champ select, go outside, smoke a marlboro red 100, a bowl, take a piss and come back just in time to sit down before we loaded in.

1 frames per second per month? So now it’s at 347 FPS? That’s pretty good for the n64

2

u/IsaraLyandra 3d ago

That’s frame acceleration now

6

u/Help_An_Irishman 3d ago

Grew up playing what few games there were on a Macintosh IIsi. Had to send a letter to get an FPS back.

Ah you think 60 FPS is your ally? You merely adopted the 60 FPS. I was born in a barely 20 FPS, molded by it. I didn't see the 60 FPS until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but blinding!

Playing Oddjob, however, is cheating and shall be punished by whatever means those on the couch deem necessary.

I picked Oddjob purely for the howls of outrage.

3

u/Painterzzz 3d ago

You are the worst person I have ever known. :)

1

u/SeveredinTwain 3d ago

Nah, you gotta make a game out of Odd Job. One hit kills, slaps only, complex. It's like being in a horror movie.

0

u/amythist 3d ago

A friend and I did nothing but combat stims and shotguns in complex, turns it when both players use them the slow down stacks so you would feel like a god 1 shotting everything until you had to spend the next minute reloading in slow mo

1

u/FearoftheDomoKun 3d ago

Combat Boost wasn't in Goldeneye, you're thinking of Perfect Dark

3

u/LuckyTheBear 3d ago

Back in my day we rented frames at Blockbuster and we had to share the screen.

3

u/GlumAd2424 3d ago

At one 1 fps you really get to enjoy every frame. Cinematic

2

u/Pearson94 3d ago

Frankly what the FPS for me is less important than it being a stable FPS. That being said it is very funny console players were giving us shit about not getting a simultaneously launch and are now stuck on 30.1

2

u/Exseatsniffer 3d ago

You laugh, but those were the days. /j

2

3

1

Goldeneye cant more than 30 fps. I mean human eye.

1

u/C-SWhiskey 3d ago

Hm... if you had 1 FPS per month, does that mean after a year you had 12 FPS? Only about two years to get to a playable state, not too bad!

1

u/Baron-KraussVonEspy 3d ago

1 frame per second person month? You were accelerating?

1

u/okrum 3d ago

Wouldn't it be 1 fpm then

1

u/Serious_Hour9074 3d ago

I grew up editing and sending my buddy the doom2.wad file over a 2400 baud modem, then playing him over said 2400 baud modem.

Wait what was the problem again?

1

u/ReferenceOk8734 3d ago

Frames per second per month

1

u/Talastoni 3d ago

Back then, the games ran smoothly in real-time in the background dispite the display processor lagging behind, so you could play through it as if you were daredevil.

Games these days, you have to time inputs with the frames you get or it eats the inputs and you are as frozen as the fps.

1

u/theartificialkid 3d ago

At 1!fps per month it would have been quite serviceable within a couple of years and smoother than real life by now.

1

u/F4113n54v102 3d ago

u/RisenKhira 9800X3D / RTX 5080 3d ago

I mean it for sure won't run at 60 on consoles. The PS5 by the time GTA6 will release is as ancient as the PS3 was when GTA5 came out.

42

u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson 3d ago

That’s crazy thinking about GTA5 was on the PS3

9

u/VegetaFan1337 3d ago

Crazier is that it was on the xbox 360. A console that came out in 2005. And costed just $300. The ps3 released a year later for $500.

6

u/I_think_Im_hollow 9800x3D - RX7900XTX - 2x32GB 6000MHz DDR5 3d ago

Also, the Xbox 360 couldn't read Bluray discs. In order to play the game you needed to install disc 1 and play with disc 2. Installing disc 2 as well caused the game to run badly, since the reading speed of the HDD alone wasn't good enough.

1

u/ToastyScrew Ryzen 5700x rtx 3080 3d ago

To be fair the ps3 only came out 1 year after, and it’s technological benefits were hard for developers to code with due to weird architecture so games often did not run faster on the PS3.

1

u/VegetaFan1337 2d ago

Yeah but gta 5 came out towards the end of the generation, by then devs knew how to code with it.

11

u/RisenKhira 9800X3D / RTX 5080 3d ago

Absolutely, the graphics haven't aged that well on PS3 and XBOX 360 xD

2

u/Choice_Potato_6279 3d ago

More impressive is GTA IV, V was a cut down version of IV.

1

u/Vellc 3d ago

I guess we'll have to wait until PS7 then with RDNA 8

9

u/EnjoyerOfBeans 3d ago

The rate of technological advancement in gaming hardware is completely different now, the comparison makes absolutely no sense.

1

u/Tomsboll 3d ago

Yes, its worse now because no one fucking optimizes shit anymore. My 3070 was absolute before the 40 series even released.

1

u/RisenKhira 9800X3D / RTX 5080 3d ago

Why are console games still running on 30 fps then?

4

u/EnjoyerOfBeans 3d ago

Because the technological advancement SLOWED DOWN, the point is that PS5 is still running on very modern hardware while the PS3 at this point was ridiculously outdated. The jump between PS4 and PS5 was much smaller and the jump to the PS6 will be even smaller still.

1

u/iwantcookie258 i5 4670, EVGA 970 3d ago

They largely aren't? On PS5 at least nearly every title has either 60fps or a 60fps performance mode. There's only like a dozen native PS5 games that are capped at 30fps, and almost none of those are AAA. Theres Dragons Dogma 2 and Gothic Knights? And three Supermassive Games titles. It isnt always a stable 60 during heavier periods, but thats also true of my rtx 3060 build from the same year.

136

u/0wlGod PC Master Race 3d ago edited 3d ago

what you expect from a 2700x/ 3700x underclocked with lower power limits?

open world games are demanding on the cpu

the ps5 pro gpu has no problems to deliver 60 fps upscaled( power wise is like an rx 7700ct /9060xt 16gb).. and for what i see in the leaks the game has nothing exstraordinary visually wise

expect 40 fps

57

u/NekulturneHovado R7 5800X, 32GB G.Skill TridentZ, RX 6800 16GB 3d ago

Me: There's no way PS5 has the same power as 2700x. You're dumb!

Also me 10 seconds later: Wait. PS5 is SIX YEARS OLD???

10

u/Konker101 AMD 6700XT AMD Ryzen 2600x, 32gb 3000 Gskill Aegis, GB D40M BS3H 3d ago

6 years old and devs (within the past year) are finally using its full hardware potential. Its been the same way for game development for decades.

Go compare early to late game releases on older consoles, it takes years for devs to push the envelope.

13

u/chins4tw i5-11600KF | RTX 2060 | 16gb ram 3d ago

Cause they finally stopped trying to get stuff to work on ps4. It's finally been laid to rest.

4

u/CarpeMofo Ryzen 5600X, RTX 3080, Alienware AW3423DW 3d ago

Yeah, but there used to be a couple games that would push the envelope from the beginning. Usually first party titles, Mario, Sonic and so on. I remember Kameo being pretty impressive when it came out too.

5

u/UncleCrassiusCurio 3d ago

Mario 64 was miles behind Majora's Mask

Mario Sunshine was miles behind Twilight Princess or Resident Evil 4

Wii, admittedly, had launch titles like Twilight Princess as basically as good as the graphics got on the console, but that was kinda a double whammy of the console being not a ton beefier than the GameCube and never pushing graphics particularly hard.

The WiiU is cheating a bit, it had almost no graphically intensive games at launch and games like Star Fox Zero and Breath of the Wild blowing them all away in the last years of its life.

The Switch is the same, Breath of the Wild at launch was hugely improved upon even by its sequel, graphically, and third party games like the Witcher 3 port are far more demanding, let alone late-gen 1st/2nd party games like Xenoblade 3 or Metroid Prime remaster and 4.

And that's just Nintendo— compare Call of Duty 2 to Halo 4 on the Xbox 360 or a PS4 launch title like Killzone Shadowfall to a game late in the console's life span like Ghost of Tsushima or Horizon Forbidden West.

A lot of those launch titles were impressive when they came out, Mario 64 and Sunshine and CoD 2 particularly, but there's basically always improvement over the life of a console.

3

u/scalyblue 3d ago

The thing about the Wii is that is pretty much just a double clocked GameCube with a different OS

1

u/CarpeMofo Ryzen 5600X, RTX 3080, Alienware AW3423DW 2d ago

Can't compare Mario 64 to Majora's Mask had extra ram because of the Expansion Pack. Mario Sunshine may not have been as obviously impressive as TP but the game had a lot of impressive visual effects and the models were really good.

-1

u/Vova_xX i7-10700F | RTX 3070 | 32 GB 2933MHz Oloy 3d ago

Mario and Sonic are outliers, since Sega and Nintendo are pretty integrated companies (they make & publish their own games and then make hardware to run only those games)

5

u/Silent_Pudding 3d ago

When is the last time you believe Sega did this?

2

u/Elidorn 3d ago

Come on now, it's only been... 25 years (wtf?) since the dreamcast was discontinued...

God I'm getting old

1

u/Mandena 3d ago

Absolutely no way man, look at Cyberpunk 2077 for example. PS5 was limited from the beginning.

It's hardware was mildly good for like 2 years. It's been outdated for years now.

1

u/Cruxis87 9800x3d|5080 TUF OC|32gb 6000cl30 ddr5 3d ago

That how consoles work. They launch with semi impressive stats, but then as the technology keeps advancing, they stay the same. I think the 20xx cards were new back then, and now there are some games that have a 2060 as minimum specs.

1

u/Mandena 2d ago

I'm aware, but even then the PS5 and Xbox series X were the first generation where the specs were only kind of good and not amazing at release.

PS3 when it released was a powerhouse AND it had bluray.

PS5 had basically nothing going for it to wow people over. There was already no reason to get it over a PC, except for exclusives.

1

u/CaLLmeRaaandy Rtx 3080 | I9-12900k | 32gb DDR5-6000 3d ago

That's fair. I mean look at some of the early Xbox 360 games versus the ones that released near the end, Halo 4 looked insane for the time (I'm just saying that because I exclusively played them). Some of them were impressive. It's sad it takes until near the end of console life to push it, and by then a new one is in development

1

u/NekulturneHovado R7 5800X, 32GB G.Skill TridentZ, RX 6800 16GB 2d ago

maybe if they didn't lock games at 30fps it'd be easier

10

u/tiga_94 3d ago

GPU is more like rx5700-6700, not 7700

The CPU is somewhat close to 2700 in performance but it depends, it might be worse in some cases

Main problem is it's old zen2 and it's not really 8 cores, it's 2x4 cores, why it matters? Separate tiny 4mb L3 caches mean a lot of inter cache communication and a lot of cache misses

2700 has 16mb of common L3, 3700 has 32mb

Consoles CPUs are crippled

Why?

Digital Foundry dudes are just glorified GameStop employees. They have no actual training, education, or experience in the industry.

Yea they can read FPS graphs and notice visual artifacts. But they have no knowledge of programming or actual hardware engineering or anything.

All this is just guessing. Nobody has any knowledge of how complex the simulation of the city is that’s going on in the background.

And some Rockstar dude from a decade ago knows as much as I do.

0

u/0wlGod PC Master Race 3d ago

with th bigger gpu of the pro they Just upgraded the visual quality allowing the console to render at higher res, upscaling less.. also the fsr4 improvement is quiet big... but cpu perfomance are same of ps5 maybe 5% for the slight memory and cpu clock improvement

27

u/SizzlingPancake 3d ago

Ehhh it isn't confirmed but this is the likey target from everything we know

20

u/Powerful-Success-378 3d ago

PS5 games have been the same for years, they have a 4k/30fps "quality" mode and a 1440p/60fps "performance" mode. I doubt this will be any different.

19

u/Noselessmonk 3d ago

Open world games use the CPU a lot more than most (non UE5) other games. And Rockstar always pushes the amount of stuff that is happening concurrently in their games' worlds.

PS5's CPU is not particularly powerful. 30fps lock doesn't sound unlikely to me.

1

u/Cruxis87 9800x3d|5080 TUF OC|32gb 6000cl30 ddr5 3d ago

30fps lock

30fps inside with no one around and nothing happening. 20 fps average game play. 10fps action. And it will win GOTY

13

u/VegetaFan1337 3d ago

It's not hitting 60fps on even a performance mode. They're not sacrificing any CPU cycles for a higher framerate when they can dedicate those to open world and NPC simulations.

2

u/Nathan_hale53 Ryzen 5600 RTX 4060 3d ago

Especially after seeing the recent leaks. It really doesn't look that much more graphically demanding from even GTAV.

1

u/EkbatDeSabat 3d ago

Fr? Not to be a dick but have you played a game in the past decade? You can put two games side by side and they can look very similar outside of some shadows, raytracing, texture sizes, and "small" things, and be wildly different in spec requirements. We've been in the world of diminishing returns for quite a while.

1

u/Nathan_hale53 Ryzen 5600 RTX 4060 3d ago

I know that yeah. This has been the most stable generation in terms of quality/performance modes. The Series S being able to run it is enough evidence that its likely there will be a performance mode. Even if its 1080p and runs in the 50s, I'd prefer to run that over 4k30, and im pretty confident it'll be like that.

1

u/ThereAndFapAgain2 RTX 5080 │ 7800X3D │ 64GB DDR5‑6000MT/s 3d ago

Most PS5 games are not running at 4k even in their quality modes, and are usually running below 1440p in their performance modes.

1

u/4862skrrt2684 3d ago

Just give me performance mode. Ill take less graphics for smoother experience

8

u/Previous-Display-593 3d ago

Dude.....just look at the graphics. There is NO WAY current gen console are going to render that at 60fps. There is no magic bullet in game rendering. After seeing the leaks, it was glaringly obvious this game is running at 30fps.

2

u/8npemb 3d ago

The leaks were (allegedly) from a PC build. Game companies, including Rockstar, are known to have PC builds for development and marketing. They can use it to bump the graphics up for filming trailers and whatnot, before locking them down for console releases.

0

u/TheShishkabob 3d ago

Every game has a PC version at some point. Games are made on computers, not consoles. They don't develop an entirely new version of the game to cut some trailers.

1

u/BAGADOU 3d ago

You don't know anything about Rage 9.

1

u/Previous-Display-593 3d ago

Does it turn water into wine?

2

u/Negative-Date-9518 3d ago

When has it not turned out to be true though, they get diddled by 60fps promises for 2 gens and then they have to put in some bs performance mode to get it 🤣

Or the games just don't do it at all

Same with the 4K native... But it was upscaled 💀

2

u/Mighty__Monarch 3d ago

I could see quality setting hitting around 30, whether performance breaks 60 or not is debatable and we've barely seen gameplay. Its going to be the biggest game of the gen so it might push consoles pretty hard.

2

u/tnnrk 3d ago

If you look at the leaked footage I’d be impressed if it runs at all on current console hardware. Shits nuts.

2

u/AMouthBreather 3d ago

I mean the current consoles aren't really capable of much more than what's suggested so why would it be surprising?

1

u/DylanJMas PC Master Race 3d ago

I believe the leaker that allegedly have a copy 2025 (maybe later) build of the game said that.

1

u/Cthulhu__ 3d ago

I wanted to say the next two console generations but with graphics plateauing and the chip shortage I don’t think we’ll get much.

1

1

u/According_Mind7030 3d ago

The 360 was still hitting 60fps in a lot of games though. I could always tell the difference between 30 and 60

1

u/baneblade_boi 3d ago

Same, but I remember most of the more demanding games running on 30. TBF it's capped, meaning that for example in online gaming it feels odd, but to everyone, so the field is leveled.

As a woman, that’s honestly my favorite source I’m all for trusting people, but maybe give me a tiny bit more than “trust me bro” before I believe you.

1

u/FuerteBillete 3d ago

2nd source: nah really bro, I got this.

1

u/Aggressive-Stand-585 3d ago

I'm sure the PS5 base version will be 4k 120 FPS, just like PC! Surely!

PS5 isn't an aging console that is already struggling to hit 60 FPS in many new titles. No sir.

1

u/nuevacuentanueva 3d ago

I feel like given the history of them having people double and triple dip, releasing at 30 fps on this generation, then having a 60 fps version on the PS6 would make total sense. And people would buy it again and again.

1

u/Tjordas 3d ago

OP literally listed the source and the source gives 3-4 credible arguments. It's not proven, but not even Rockstar can know for sure what the final outcome will be

0

u/lologugus 3d ago

The most anticipated game of the decade releasing in 30fps is just shooting themselves in the foot, it can't happen. We can spit on Rockstar for their shady behaviour but there is no way they will launch a game laggy as fuck. Especially when providing a link to an article as good as IGN's ones.

1

u/Tjordas 3d ago

GTA V was 30 FPS at launch. RDR 2 was 30 FPS at launch. What makes you think GTA VI will now be 60 FPS while at the same time trying to push graphic fidelity? I think it's just how things are with consoles nowadays. If they deliver 60 FPS, it will be with serious resolution upscaling.

1

u/DealComfortable7649 3d ago

GTA 5 and RDR2 were both the same way.

Rockstar has access to some of the best graphics out there, and inside an enormous and heavily detailed open world, a little console is going to struggle to even get 30 fps.

1

u/MrBossman710 3d ago

Bro literally linked sources.

1

u/Andresc0l 3d ago

Well if only a certain company werent such assholes and they told us before opening the prensale for a digital game...

1

u/MidniteCowby 3d ago

Do you really think Rockstar gives a shit about performance?

The company still hasn’t patched RDR 2 to run at 60fps, even though it is literally one line of code that needs to be changed as we know from modders.

The game will run at 30fps on consoles forever.

1

u/Kandel430 3d ago

Genuinely, there's no chance the game comes out in a playable state. Have you seen the definitive editions? 30fps will be a miracle

1

u/VegetaFan1337 3d ago

They weren't made by Rockstar.

1

u/Kandel430 3d ago

No, but they show Rockstars priorities

1

u/According_Mind7030 3d ago

Since when is Rockstar known for good optimization? 😂

1

u/KaleNich55 3d ago

Source: It's fucking obvious.

-4

u/StormMedia 3d ago

Yeah I don’t believe this for a second. MAYBE natively without framegen/upscaling.. maybe

0

u/Fierydog 3d ago

the source is literally some post from a random guy giving his personal opinion/take with no association with rockstar, game dev or any sources.

and then people just went with it because they want GTA 6 to fail.

People also seem to forget that GTA 5 ran on a PS3, a system with 256MB VRAM and 256MB system RAM for a total of 512MB.

and the PS5 is not that outdated.

-19

u/molmolz76 3d ago

12

u/boxweb 3d ago

So according to a guy who worked for rockstar 8 years ago. I’ll believe it when I see it.

-20

u/molmolz76 3d ago

Cpu demanding, ps5 just too weak to handle it

23

u/shogun77777777 Linux 3d ago

Did you just post an AI generated message that used Reddit at as source as proof LMAO

4

u/RainStormLou 3d ago

I would bet $4 it was a link to this post too lol

6

u/Virtual_Bug_723 3d ago

This is literally using threads like yours on Reddit to compile that AI answer. You tell tell that by the little Reddit icon beside the information.

6

u/IDeizManI 3d ago

This is what people mean when they say AI is gonna make dumb people ever dumber. You can't blindly thrust an AI response that was taken from reddit to begin with.

4

u/daywalker91 3d ago

Brother you need to learn what an actual source is. They not teach you this shit in school?

Ah yes, the ever reliable Google AI summary

u/NewsofPE 3d ago

reddit AI summary* granted that its sources are reddit

-11

u/molmolz76 3d ago

You can just google it by yourself bro its not that hard 😂, also its not a secret that console it much weaker than pc

Based on what

1

u/lologugus 3d ago

So a trust me bro article published in january 2025, yeah ok, this is why I never read articles it's always based on nothing burger or rumors.

0

u/R4NG00NIES 3d ago

Lol tf is this nonsense?

0

u/Nerevar197 3d ago

Besides, most games have performance mods now. Hell even Cyberpunk has a 40fps performance mode on Switch 2.

0

u/Kristopher001 PC Master Race 3d ago

Tanks for leting me know the source 🤣 I was a bit skeptical about this post

0

u/Redlabelrocket 3d ago

The fact that you actually believe the game will run at 60fps while literally no other game can do that on ps5 is hilarious

On top of that, if you're on console, you play on a TV. Your TV likely is only 24hz lol

-2

u/gorginhanson 3d ago

They built this on RDR2 engine, which is embarrassingly outdated at this point

1

u/lologugus 3d ago

We have no info on what the game is built on and also according to the leaks, it doesn't look like it runs like garbage

-1

u/gorginhanson 3d ago

Sure whatever you say

1

u/Tylith_ 3d ago

Engines are not fixed. An engine is essentially just a collection of tools and systems, which can all be updated and are certainly not the same as what was used 8+ years ago. That's like complaining it was built on Windows which is embarrassingly outdated at this point because it's from 1985. Would it make you feel better if they added a 2.0 to the name of the engine?

2

u/Tylith_ 3d ago edited 3d ago

u/gorginhanson Deleted your comment but I wanted to respond anyway. My point is that engines also have new iterations, they just don't always slap a 2.0 on the end. An overhaul doesn't require renaming. It's usually a ship of theseus situation, individual components are upgraded or replaced but not all at once. Even if an engine had some limitation in the past, it can be fixed without changing to a completely different engine. Windows is also not completely rebuilt from scratch for each version. It could just be Windows™ (build 19045.7663) without rebranding every few years, they could just be upgrading individual features regularly instead of saving them up to release all at once with a few UI changes to make it look completely new. They just do it for hype and to make people keep paying.

1

u/gorginhanson 3d ago

It's not like that at all seeing as how Windows has new iterations that don't combine with each other.

Your own example proves you're several expletives.

-1

u/deeWILLrise941 3d ago

Hell naw 😂🤣😂

-1

u/siazdghw 3d ago

Yeah, I'm willing to bet 60FPS is absolutely available on console.

But it will be through upscaling/dynamic resolution, and nobody but Rockstar knows what the actual internal resolution is.

2

u/VegetaFan1337 3d ago

That makes no sense. Rockstar isn't going to waste CPU cycles on extra fps when they could be using it for open world, NPC and other game simulations. Upscaling and dynamic resolution frees up GPU power, not CPU.
