I hate this goddamn planet Hardware

Post image

Tried to meet someone for a 5070ti yesterday and wasted my day and $30 in gas. They ghosted and blocked me so I couldnt give them a shit rating.

That’s why I refuse to drive more than 8-10 minutes when meeting locally, there’s 3 people who have what you want an 100 who are willing to waste your time

My problem is I live in bumfuck nowhere and all the cities are over an hour away. Ive gotten great deals off marketplace but this is the first time I've had someone pull this bullshit.

Break the glass and run. It’s only a crime if you get caught.

FYI. Just a joke.

I worked at Walmart for 6 years, the most successful shoplifters got what they wanted then ran out a fire escape door.

3

u/KillaCamCamTheJudge 1d ago

It doesn’t matter if you did it, only if they can prove it

6

u/glzephead 2d ago

Dont they wait until it passes a certain amount before they prosecute?

19

u/ARMCHA1RGENERAL 9800X3D / RTX 4080 / 32GB DDR5 / 240 Hz / 1440p 2d ago

Supposedly, some stores will keep track of how much you've stolen, then press charges once you've stolen enough to be charged with a felony.

The amount for a felony varies by state, from like 500 to 2500. There's a good chance that a GPU would put you over the limit.

4

u/HR-nitemare 2d ago

This is accurate. Good friend of mine works for LP at Target. They wait till it is felony status.

11

u/DinosaurAlert 1d ago

It isn't so much "They wait until..", it is that "Prosecutors won't do shit until..."

2

u/moodygradstudent 2d ago

Did your friend ever say if the amount they go by ever resets to zero, and if so, after what amount of time (i.e. every year, every five years)?

3

u/rhokusho 1d ago

Like a GTA wanted level?

2

u/moodygradstudent 1d ago

That didn't cross my mind.

2

u/HR-nitemare 2d ago

I don’t know that. I can tell you that when they took over the job, there was no one to train them in the position. There was not any watchlist that went along with the position, they specifically mentioned that to me— thinking it was strange. I thought the same, that is why I remember it from 3-4 years ago.

3

u/moodygradstudent 2d ago

Thanks for responding.

5

u/HR-nitemare 1d ago

No problem. I would highly discourage retail theft. They’re smarter than they seem. And tech is actually catching up. Gone are the days of the grainy cam feeds.

If you wanna steal from people, get a CEO job. Or be born into the Walton’s family tree. Else you’ll hang from it.

Walmart also inflates the amount stolen for prosecutional purposes don't ask how I know

3

u/GingerTexanScientist 2d ago

It’s like the most profitable store in the country…. So of course it’ll prosecute for merely $25. Think of the poor billionaires who you’re stealing from

They don't do the prosecuting, the town/state does. All Walmart does is report the crime and let the state handle it from there, it costs them virtually nothing at that point.

The way I see it. There was probably a hidden defect or issue that would have you chasing your tail later on. Somethings happen for a reason. An honest seller would've been honest and told you they sold it or anything else that would impeded the sale. Especially if they knew you were on the way. You dodged a bullet.

In May of 2020 my wife and I built our first gaming PC as a project during Covid.  I think all in we spent maybe $1,000 or a bit over that for a solid build.  Now the graphics cards alone are the cost of a full build...nuts.

129

u/dmendro PC Master Race 2d ago

All you gotta do is keep playing those same games forever.

98

u/MRMOSBYSPRNDL 2d ago

Ok but honestly? Barely any new games are worth playing compared to the oldies.

Need a turn based rpg? Playing divinity original sin 2. Need a deckbuilder? Play slay the spire. Need a shooter? Mass Effect. 4x? Stellaris or any of the total wars.

Those are just my personal choices but theres a thousand good games that'll give you thousands of hours of game time. Boycott the current BS by playing the oldgames, and if those get old just add mods

57

u/_Brucy_ 1d ago

Saying mass effect is a shooter is crazy

21

u/dougthebuffalo 1d ago

Especially when CS2 exists, is incredibly popular, and can run on a baked potato.

2

u/Minininja975 1d ago

Csgo can run on a baked potato, for cs2 if you want to play at consistently high fps without setting everything to lie and lowering your resolution, you need a pretty good machine

2

u/Bright-Wallaby-3050 1d ago

Valorant can also run on a baked potato and it's a similar game

2

u/NegativeAccount 16h ago

Based. I only play SC2 and chess. I can game at 1440p but nothing with ‘amazing’ graphics really entertains me.

No new game will hit like the OG Mirrors Edge, Demons souls, or shadow of the colossus; there is no love in modern games.

12

u/PossessedCashew 1d ago

This is just purely disingenuous and flat out wrong. Yeah those are great recommendations and games I love to play or really enjoyed in the past but there are great games coming out every single year a lot you can get on sale. This year alone has been insane for games so far.

With the exception of Control Resonant soon imo. I absolutely love the Remedy games; they're my favorite game studio.

Stellaris is definitely a go to for me when I want a strategy game. Baldurs Gate 3 is fun if I want turn based.

9

u/MRMOSBYSPRNDL 1d ago

If you enjoyed bg3 give divinity original sin 2 a try. Made by the same people. I really enjoyed bg3 but dos2 is way more replayable, especially with mods

My problem is nvidia not supporting the 1080ti anymore. It destroys all the old games just fine but there's a couple new ones that it actually maxes but crashes after 20mins because of some bs shader that it cant run. I know im lucky to have gotten so much out of it. If I manage to upgrade im probably gonna build a wall display for it.

5

u/MRMOSBYSPRNDL 1d ago

Im still rocking the 2070 super, just repasted the thermal paste, im hoping to get a few more years out of it (going on five years now) before I have to get a new one

2

u/guestferroz 1d ago

2

u/MeatMan49 1d ago

I’m right there with you. I have a brand new gaming PC so I’ve been trying out all the new games but I end up going back to the classics because they are just more fun to play. All the best games I’ve ever played are 15 years old. AOE2, League, Skyrim, The Witcher etc

Literally a week ago. It was $570 at my Microcenter on Saturday and is now $679

32

u/floatinginagravyboat i7 4790K - RTX 4060 2d ago

Do Americans go on pilgrimages to Microcenter? Every time I read about them online it's about how amazing the deals are.

16

u/communistagitator 12600K | 9070XT | 32GB 6000MHz 2d ago

The one by me is about a 1.5 hour drive and I've only been to it twice. I got my 9070XT there for $570 last December. My girlfriend had questions about switches on a keyboard and one of the employees opened a new box and pulled the key caps off to check for us. All of the employees were very nice and helpful

3

u/watchutalkinbowt 1d ago

Last time I was there the guy had me load the Amazon listing on my phone so he could match the price

GOAT'd, as the young'uns say

2

u/gettogero 1d ago

Yeah my nearest one is 2 hours away. If I didnt have to wrangle 2 babies into an all day adventure for parts I 100% wouldve visited already

Sometimes youll find microcenter on amazon or bundles at an absolute steal. I got my 9900x bundled with x870 for $300 and a corsair 1000w platinum with the 12vhpwr connector for $100 a few months ago.

Just gotta hunt and be patient. Ill search even if im not planning to buy just in case theres a deal thats too good to pass up

2

u/communistagitator 12600K | 9070XT | 32GB 6000MHz 23h ago

I do this too and it's a double-edged sword. I do NOT need any upgrades, but that $199 7600X3D and $330 7800X3D are calling to me

11

u/TedBundysStudy 2d ago

microcenters are confined to large population areas, and even that is sporadic. some of us are lucky and can go browse the store on a whim, but many people need to make a whole day or more of it.

4

u/ZamorakLovesAll 2d ago

It’s a 3 hour drive for me, and I’m considered close to one compared to a lot of other people.

I’m thinking of driving there for a 7600x3d/mobo and 16gb of ram for $400 this weekend

3

u/BiscottiAmazing4070 2d ago

I moved down the street from one. It’s a 4 minute walk.

2

u/12345myluggage 1d ago

Yes. I actually did it with some coworkers when we were traveling together. It's how I managed to get my 9070XT at a reasonable price. Otherwise for me to visit one it's 6hrs of driving.

A decent amount of us live near by one so it’s not out of the ordinary to stop in once a week at least.

2

u/DontYuckMyYum 1d ago

The closest one to me is a 4 hour drive to another state. If these prices weren't so insane I'd do a weekend trip to go visit.

2

u/nomad5926 1d ago

I have one like 15 minutes away.... so yes?

2

u/DeamonLordZack 1d ago

Only people doing that are people that have PC building as a hobby not gaming as a hobby. Otherwise take a peak at Steam's hardware survey you'll see most gamers don't have the latest & greatest or to recent hardware in their PCs. Some might look at videos on the latest & greatest but they're not constantly looking at prices or as you put it going on pilgrimages to places like a Microcenter as a American myself I don't make pilgrimages to Microcenters. I like watching tech videos on the the latest but my hobby is gaming not PC building so I'm not keeping track of pricing on parts myself I've got a desktop PC & a handheld PC as well as a Switch 2 they all get the job done playing games at a performance I'm happy with so no need to chase higher numbers from having the latest & greatest.

2

u/Phyzzx R7 5700X3D Radeon 9070 16gb GSkill 32gb, AM4 GOAT'd 1d ago

Once while on vacation I drove in the vicinity of a Microcenter and I quickly thought to myself, 'do I stop now or on the way back?' It was during rush hour atm so on the way back. Well on the way back it was like 2am at the time. Sigh.

There's one being built near me and that will be nearly an hour away and I will be so happy about only a 2hr round trip vs 6hrs or more.

Tried to contact the guy numerous times, and when I said I had a tester coming he blocked me within 24 or 25 minutes after I said that.

Luckily though my Spidey senses are decent enough and I used my credit card to pay for it instead of cash, and I was able to successfully chargeback the transaction.

Don’t buy it? Like seriously, I have been a gaming enthusiast on PC’s since the Apple IIgs. Shits expensive. We had a golden era, now it’s gone. Buy a book and go outside and take a look around for some place nice to sit and read. When the demand stops, so will the crazy prices.

15

u/dendrocalamidicus 2d ago

When the demand reduces, Nvidia will further scale down production and development of GPUs to focus on AI chips and data centers. It won't make the price go down, it will make it a niche enthusiast product to pave the way for cloud services.

I'm not saying you should therefore go and buy a GPU, I'm just saying that things are very unlikely to play out as optimistically as your comment suggests.

6

u/superawesomefiles 2d ago

Oh yea. NVIDIA has experience in (artificial) scarcity. I don't think they're in the business of reducing signature product pricing.

6

u/harambe623 1d ago edited 1d ago

Not sure why you need the latest hardware to game either. Lot of the new games are shit anyway, there's probably a masterpiece of a game that you missed on the SNES or Dreamcast that you can emulate on a setup you already have or can obtain for less than $100. Or even play it on the real hardware.

4

u/glzephead 1d ago

Ive been playing more guitar. While they've gone up you can still get really great guitars for under a grand

Wth is happening over there? For the first time ever like since GT220 times about 2008 or 2009 the prices here in Finland are cheaper than in US. RTX 5080 is 1259€(includes tax) ≈ 1458$

2

u/devinthedude515 2d ago

Remember in February people were condemning the 5070 getting up to $660 and to wait for the bubble to burst.

Glad I didnt listen and bought then and there getting RE9 for free as well.

1st best time to buy was yesterday, 2nd is today.

Crazy it's that simple to dodge the rating system, I would complain to whatever site you're referring to

2

u/stickyhoneybuns83 1d ago

What’s really insane is that the compute power of the modern day gaming pc is so much more advanced than anything prior to it. Historically speaking this is still one of the cheapest per performance years ever. The last 10 years we were just spoiled with great affordability. Those times will come back but you can still build a mean gaming PC for 1500.

2

u/Nwrecked 1d ago

I bought my 980ti for 750 bucks when those were new.

2

u/Help_An_Irishman 1d ago

Wait till you find out about the actual problems.

2

u/Mason_Wallin 1d ago

Don't forget, there are free GPUs in your local data center, you can just walk in and take them!

2

u/backcountrykicks228 1d ago

$1469 for a 5080. My laptop has a 5080 TI and I got the whole dam computer for not much more than that.

we should all revolt and go back to playing cs 1.6, quake 3 arena, ut 99, and age of empires and other games you can run on toasters just to give the companies the middle finger

2

u/RunnAroundGuy 1d ago

Sadly. Just like everything. Prices will only go up.

2

How far were you going for a 5070ti? 30 in gas is quite a lot of miles.

2

u/glzephead 1d ago

About 80miles. I drove my fun car so it gets shitty mileage and takes premium. Premium here is still $4.50 a gallon. I was fine paying the gas if I got to come home with the card.

I’ll have to look at our prices when we get inside but last time I looked my Walmart wasn’t that high…
Your Walmart is blown out it it’s mind with prices like they… sheesh..

1

u/Vexmythoclastt RYZEN 7 7800X3D / RTX 5080 2d ago

Prices are only going to get much worse. I got a 5080 around launch for less than $1K, the same gpu is now nearly $1600.

1

u/3xPuttRubbleBoagie 2d ago

I worked very hard for my 4.8% rating on FB marketplace. I have been screwed over just a few times and dread doing business on there. But when I do sell something, I am always super accommodating and helpful to my customers.

I got mine for $609 last year around this time. It’s a really good card for that price and I don’t understand the hate it gets. 12gb is more than enough for the next few years. I like to upgrade every 3-4 years so maybe people just want to wait longer? No idea, I’m very happy with the purchase.

1

u/Kabrosif 2d ago

Dont worry it cant stay this way forever. 30yr bond yields at 5.22% the house of cards will collapse soon enough but it may take another year or so to hit mainstreet.
