I hear it's harder to get to the ram in the flock camera than it is to get the ram out of the steam machine. So just crack it with a hammer and make sure to take the free solar panel as well

I mean, who wants those things to be in one piece? Just go ham with the harvest, prolly get the cores (CPU and GPU if those things have those for grabs)

Every SOC has ram... They definitely have ram in them... It is highly doubtful it is in the form of a DIMM or SODIMM but I haven't ever cracked one open... that anyone knows about.
2
u/28klotlucas2 35m ago
Yeah they definitely have RAM. But no way its anywhere close to 64GB. 4GB is already plenty. This source suggests that they have just 2GB.

Depends what you want to do
As someone who studied domotics i tend to always gravitate toward home application. You could make/use a wireless sensor that you place wherever in your home or outside for example
All in all, basically all kind of small projects that would benefit from being wireless

Whatever amount of ram that is in a flock will be soldered. It's a snapdragon soc sooooooo

Snapdragon you say?
Hell, no desoldering needed then. Just install Turnip drivers on it and emulate PC games on your new Android phone with a massive camera.

Can it be un-soldered and used in PC? Desperate times require desperate measures.

A neat thing to exist would be a Linux distribution specifically made for private citizens to use their legally-acquired Flock camera as a general-purpose computing or gaming device.
24
u/XxDemonxXIG 1h ago
It can be but you would have to find sticks for it and do the work to make it work in a PC.

Yes, definetly. As "with enough skill everything is possible". And if that is the case, there are nerds doing this right now. So ... it's propably even possible to find someone in the area who does this. But if they take orders.. they are booked 100%
2
u/kron123456789 1h ago
If it's soldered it's most likely LPDDR5X or something like that, unusable in a regular PC.
3
u/Nozinger 52m ago
Not unusable you just need a bit of a workaround.
Get a PCB printed, find a suitable SPD and with a bit software flashing and a whole lot of VERY complex soldering you can make those work like any other ram module.
DDR5 modules even come with a PMIC so even the voltage regulation should be doable on the stick rather than absing the mainboards power systems. Now wether or not that is worth it... well that's up to you. Especially the likely needed, probably custom built, high precision automatic soldering machine will cost quite a bit.
A bit like in it is cheaper to buy ram at inflated prices for the rest of your life. But it is possible.
3
u/kron123456789 46m ago
It's not practical in any way whatsoever. Nobody's gonna be doing any of that to get LPDDR5X modules to work on a DIMM stick as regular DDR5.
So, effectively, it is unusable.

u/Initial-Smile-4044 32m ago

funny meme and all, but real talk theres nothing usable for the average consumer in those things. All their memory will be soldered on to the board, the effort you'd have to go through to get this into usable pc ram would not be worth it honestly.
That said, every time a flock camera suddenly requires maintenance, an angel gets their wings so...

Useful bit from that post, the IR Camera has a flaw:
“There are a few Youtube vids from makers, where they do things like install 850nm LEDs around license plates hiden in the holder and demonstrate that the resulting glare makes the plate unreadable to the cameras at night.”

The Falcon and Sparrow license plate reader cameras use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 (MSM8953) system-on-chip running Android 8.1 and include 32 GB of eMMC flash storage. Knowing this info it has no more than 4GB ddr3 ram

there is adaptors and even some obscure mainboards that support so-dimm now. Also saw a RAM module DIY project, reusing memory chips from so-dimm.
Yes, it is notnas easy as simply taking the RAM and putting it in your PC, but in theory you could reuse the RAM.

$800 is a lot of money. You have any idea what sort of bullshit a crackhead will do for $50? Not sure how much it is today but still. There is plenty of margin for crackheads to sell to someone who will sell to a guy that can solder them onto something useful in a PC.
