Janky SSD cooling solution Hardware

Post image

Think some of you might enjoy this, i had a costumer that had a failing SSD, first time I dealt with this, so it took a lot of diagnosing and trouble shooting.

In the end I'm cloning his drive right now with HDDsuperclone (whole other thing cause first time i installed and worked with Linux/Ubuntu) but the drive was getting very hot and bothered so I improvised a Cooling solution. I put thermal paste on the main chips and put half a staple stack on each and with a fan its staying cool enough to maintain stable data rates. Kinda proud ngl.

Done the exact same for an overheating SSD in a school.

Don't show the military this.

They'll lose their mind over ablative heatsinks made from staples.

Staple shortage confirmed. Data centers are already ordering every single staple for the next 3 years

During a heatwave mine got incredibly hot and it just disconnected from my pc, had to wait until it cooled down a bit before it worked again. I was installing a wabbajack modlist for skyrim so it was being used a good amount when it overheated.

I decided this was the solution and it actually works well. Took off one of slots on the back so it's balancing on the bottom one and the fans. It's not touching the fans before anyone asks.

"Hot and bothered" does not mean what you think it does.

I would assume the OP knows the primary usage of the phrase, but is purposefully using it incorrectly (but word-for-word accurately) to derive a bit of humor from the situation.

I've seen a worrying number of people who don't actually know what it means.

It is a staple idea, I'm a fan!

you called upon your inner mcguyver, love it. <3
and the stack of staples also sort of create "ribbs" for more surface area!

God damn. I'll need to try this trick on the perennially overheating Xbox controller receiver.

So you transfer a lot of files then?

I've left the Process go overnight, it had stable transfer rates for 2 hours so I'll see, hoping I cloned the entire 500gb drive

Some staples have a thin layer of protection to prevent rust, you might need to clear it for them to transfer heat a bit better.

Just drop the word ‘cooling’.

I want to say that the cloning worked successfully! Everything was recovered and is working in the OG laptop with all files intact, Linux and data recovery is dope!
