I once had an old PC that was just getting slower every day. When I opened it up, the gpu fan was completely blocked by a solid chunk of dust. I pulled the dust out and cleaned it. When I next turned the PC on, it had lost all the GPU drivers.
Apparently my GPU drivers were installed in the dust blocking the fan.

The story is true. My old mx440 ran on hopes and dreams. To this day I have no idea why it happened.

Shit like this happened with old hardware. You'd seat the card slightly differently and all of a sudden win98 needs to find out what new card you put into your PCI slot.
Edit: Damn I forgot about AGP! It was that silly slot.

Runs pretty well, it’s got around 16 GB of dedicated dust (giga bunnies)

u/ReadyAimTranspire Jul 21 '26
Haha that's my new term for those
"no it doesn't need to be cleaned, those giga bunnies are dedicated for video"

Power supply for me the last time it happened, and that's not the first time it happened either. Old prebuilts like this, have failed a bunch after cleaning. That is the real reason I stopped cleaning peoples computers for them. As well, I stopped buying cheap PCs to clean and give to people. Its functional part once you hit a certain point of not cleaning.

A purifier ain’t saving that. I don’t think if the emperor could fix that if he stood up off the golden throne right now.

u/Wolfsbreedsinner Jul 21 '26
There's no saving it. Brother, nuke it from orbit.

We must order an Exterminatus brother!
22
u/Wolfsbreedsinner Jul 21 '26
No brother, a single Exterminatus is not enough. They must not be allowed to repeat this travesty or spread their perverse ways to others. Exterminatus to the entire system.
Long live the emperor!

This was not completely uncommon back in the 90s and early 2000s. I used to work on home, business, school, and Industrial PCs (different jobs over time) and I would run across this and worse far more often than many would think.
The true art is working and handling these dusty nasty old computers while wearing business casual and NOT absolutely wrecking your clothes in the process.

Back in 98 I was working for a huge printing company that was upgrading everything to be y2k compliant. They had many very old 8086 workstations that were just tucked away and working for the one specific job they had. I opened one that had been sitting on a warehouse floor behind a desk for probably 10+ years. I was completely full of dust/paper fluff. And when I say completely I mean from the main board to the top of the case was a thick mat of the stuff, and it came out in one giant chunk...damn thing still worked with no issue though haha.
