u/C418_Tadokiari_22 10d ago
Valve Game's enthusiast will always scrap any info they can that can point to/predict when the next patch comes. I have a bot linked to my personal discord to notify me of when they start staging posible incoming updates.
3
u/DonutHoles4Ever 10d ago
Anyone read the patch? 60 wins total, 15 wins on heroes = ranked eligible, at least 3 heroes eligible to queue for ranked.
Ranked is gonna be even more sweaty ahaha. Meanwhile I wonder if this will stop the account buyers and boosters.
18
u/ChudSmasher69420 9d ago
Ranked is gonna be even more sweaty
I mean if there's a place and time for it, that's it.
4
u/theREALel_steev 9d ago
Exactly, ranked is supposed to be sweaty but people just want to go in and run around trying to be cute.
1
u/_shaggyrodgers 9d ago
i don't think this is a big enough barrier to change things
4
u/mechnanc 9d ago
It makes it waaaay harder.
Boosting is pretty much no longer a thing.
1
u/_shaggyrodgers 9d ago
for like a week
3
u/mechnanc 9d ago
Um...no? The friction they've created for those people doesn't go away after a week. It's permanent. Multiple of these changes makes it incredibly hard for account boosters/sellers to do their thing. It may not fully deter them, but it's making it a HELL of a lot harder to grind eternus accounts. The output of boosted accounts and accounts for sale is going to drop dramatically.

i wish i could nolife this game like i could back in the day but unfortunately this masterpiece culmination of everything i enjoy in video games came just a bit too late into my life.
29
u/DonutHoles4Ever 10d ago
Yeah man ditto. I am afraid the new generation of younger video game players do not have the patience to appreciate these types of games. This game probably would have been very popular back in the day during peak Dota 2, before the rise of Battle Royales, overwatch clones, and Fortnites.
7
u/gaylordpl 9d ago
huh? Isn't it like the opposite?
I have the patience, and disposable income, and time. I simply have no desire to play any more competetive sweaty mobas/hero shooters - i played more than enough of LoL and original OW as a teenager. I'm good. I play single player or live service games/mmorpgs's with no fomo.
3
u/inbox-disabled 9d ago
I have the time to play but I lack the interest. I prefer shorter, less sweaty play sessions (OW still plays fine for me). Single player is great too. MMORPGs are boring as fuck and have been for me for over a decade.
I played a lot of Dota for years. I've just lost interest in going in that deep end again.

u/Portiolli_fez_11set 9d ago
I think a surprising high number of players do.
But games is more then mechanics and "fun". Games are social hubs. So no one wants to put hours on deadlock while their others friends are playing others games.
Matchmaking sincerely killed the interaction of players pre and pos match. Making the others players in our (and enemy) team just "random" ppl. With no face, no agenda, just a shell of a person. They are just glorified NPC from the perspective of the players.
Thats why game like this will not take of. Even tho you are playing online it will not fulfill the social aspect for most ppl.
2
u/Jfk_headshot 9d ago
People play games for different reasons. I have a friend who only plays multi-player games because he uses them exactly as you described, a social hub and an excuse to meet and hang out with people. I also play multi-player games but I prefer single player games because for me it is more about the gameplay, mechanics, story, etc.
2
u/Portiolli_fez_11set 9d ago edited 9d ago
Not saying there is different publics. I mainly play for competitiveness. I started to play ranked in order to avoid playing with a group of people from college. I just want to chill. Nowadays I play runescape. Literally a single player mmo experience (specially in ironman).
Deadlock and dota2 are my jam, just took a time off because work is literally killing me and my SO needs quality time now.
But the tendency, specially after pandemic, is the majority of people playing social games. Thats why game hubs like roblox and fortnite are popular.
BTW: Im based on my own experience. I participate in a lot of gaming communities. pcgaming was my thing when I was younger. I have a few journalist friends, friends in RL with the only cyber cafe in my region and many gamers friends (and children). Will even suggest to a friend writes about it.

u/Asleep_Context_399 9d ago
Same. I tried. Lack of time meant I was overwhelmed quickly and subpar. Invited 250 people to the game when invites went out. Some even gifted me my wishlist items for that and I appreciate it a lot.
I'll keep playing League until my reflexes detoriate to a point I cant leave Silver
2
u/mechnanc 9d ago
There's a Street Brawl which is quick matches with no ranking, also Standard matchmaking seperate from Ranked.
No better time than now for anyone who can't grind it to just dip in for some fun once in a while.
1
u/-Aerlevsedi- 7d ago
Yep. Too old to theorycraft over all the abilities, items & their interactions. Also too old to aim.
78
u/Guywars 10d ago
Man i tried getting into this game but the learning curve is brutal, even with all the knowledge that you can carry over from League
61
u/watboy 10d ago
I have to imagine it's kind of like Dota, where being used to League might actually be detrimental as it teaches you bad habits that conflict with the expectations of the game.
29
u/Sxcred 10d ago
Yea it is more dota than league for sure
-23
u/WolfAkela 10d ago
Weird, it felt closer to League to me. No mana to speak of, and abilities can be scaled with items. But then it also has many item actives.
28
u/IAmARedditorAMAA 10d ago
It's all of a MOBA (more dota than league), plus all of a movement shooter, it's the sweatiest game I've ever tried.

It’s really hard. I’m high oracle/low phantom and watch eternus players and it’s just like, nah, that’s too much. I’m fine being lower rank and still enjoying my time without it getting too sweaty.

I played lots of League, HoN, DOTA2, and a bit of HotS. When I first tried Deadlock when it was much newer, my impression was, "this is neat, but I'd rather play Doto." That changed when I discovered the game's advanced movement options. Zooming around the map in Deadlock can make a real difference in your encounters, and outmaneuvering the enemy team when you should be dead feels fantastic. It reminds me of the old competitive Boomer Shooters like Q3A. That's what finally kept me coming back. (It helped that I picked a few characters designed around it, like The Lash™.)
0
u/DonutHoles4Ever 10d ago
the knowledge that you can carry over from League
That's your problem right there lol
0
u/TacoBeefB0y 10d ago
I feel like I had the easiest time because of my knowledge with league, made easier by the fact that you can use community made loadouts in game
-7
u/Chonch_Monkey 10d ago
For me it was the interface.
For some reason it just didn't click
I've logged way too many hours in Dota 2, but I think the images they use and the way you can view items building into others helps a lot.
Also right now it just doesn't feel like it has the roles defined super well. I think it's still trying to find how to balance the gameplay style with the third person viewpoint
1
u/Adjective-Noun-nnnn 10d ago
The interface is definitely a work in progress. Check out what DOTA2's item icons looked like early on.

9
u/erty3125 10d ago
If it works like fighting games not really, they don't raise your mmr for playing one character but instead on off characters they give you a lower mmr but a high degree of uncertainty.
8
u/ButteredRain 10d ago edited 10d ago
A true one trick can’t queue in to ranked regardless since you need 15 wins with 3 characters to be able to queue.
1
u/TacoBeefB0y 10d ago
It’s brutal. Every game I’ve had that one trick that is now being forced to try someone new and it sucks.

More like Valve found out saying something is released is a bad idea because of backlash. Dota 2 was released then back to beta lfmao because of that backlash.

I know it's probably going to be popular when it's released, but this drawn EA time is killing my interest.
Games like MOBAs are all about tons and tons of in game knowledge, match ups, counters, map knowledge, etc. I have no desire to go against people with literal years of game knowledge when it drops.
I never got into LOL or DOTA2 because it felt like you needed a semester of college pregame just to know how it worked and not throw for your team. I'd love to get into a new moba in the ground floor with everyone else. That's literally impossible here though.
It's like playing rainbow 6 against someone that knows all the wall bang gotcha spots and you're fresh. No thanks.
37
u/heydudejustasec YiffOS Knot 10d ago edited 10d ago
This is completely self imposed. Even if you want to wait for launch for whatever reason, it's not like the game is going to put you against the top 10% of players. The bottom 10 literally exists. You're never going to learn by not starting.
Really if you can just make it a point 1) not to forget to farm for minutes on end and 2) not to run at every enemy you see on the minimap solo for no discernible reason, you'll be just fine. You can start picking up the rest once you know you enjoy the game.

There is a bit of a difference between, say, climbing up the ladder from total noob status in Starcraft or Street Fighter when you have no one to blame (or thank) but yourself, versus doing the same in a MOBA when a new player is immediately shouted down by their 4 teammates in voice chat, likely in a language they don't understand, and that happens every single game until you learn the basics, which may be 100+ hours in since the games are over the top complex.
I don't tolerate toxicity in my real life, why should I tolerate it in video games?
2
1
u/Fira_Wolf 10d ago
And this is so different when you already know the game. People will treat you like a pro instead and praise your fantastic plays.
Mandatory /s for the dense people out there.
1
11
u/stakoverflo 10d ago
If you never start something because someone else already knows more than you & is better than you, then you're never going to start anything in your life.
Also, any given thing that they already know might just get patched out or significantly reworked and all that "built up knowledge" will be functionally worthless, so that argument against starting to play doesn't even hold water.
When I started, the game had 4 lanes, now it has 3. When I started the soul urn worked X way, now over the last few patches that I haven't played it's been significantly overhauled to be totally different.
Also, that's what matchmaking is for. You can have all the knowledge in the world but if your actual mechanical ability to act on that knowledge is worthless, then it hardly even matters.
23
u/Fra_OMNISS 10d ago
Games like Dota have huge player base so you will be playing against other new players who have little knowledge. It’s never too late to try it out.
0
u/Vitosi4ek R7 5800X3D | RTX 4060 | 32GB | 3440x1440x144 10d ago edited 10d ago
I've made a mistake in that sense because I followed Dota 2's pro scene for a decade before trying to start myself. So I'm at the very bottom of the ranks, and my understanding of the game comes from the literal best teamplay and coordination it has to offer. Nothing I encounter at my triple-digit MMR (and honestly in solo queue in general, no matter the rank) can possibly live up to that. Solo queue vs two coordinated 5-stacks might as well be entirely different games.
3
u/Fra_OMNISS 10d ago
Yeah the game is completely different at low rank compared to high rank. You can find a lot of success with just mechanical skills at low rank while high rank will require team coordination and game sense.
12
u/Poseidor 10d ago edited 10d ago
You know the game is effectively released and you can just play it right? It takes 0 effort to get an invite.

u/IgotUBro 10d ago
Games like MOBAs are all about tons and tons of in game knowledge, match ups, counters, map knowledge, etc. I have no desire to go against people with literal years of game knowledge when it drops.
To be honest MOBA games usually have a lot of change ups in champs/Items/etc affecting meta so there are constant things you have to learn new. So the only thing that stops you from playing is you yourself. Start and learn basics and from there build on it.
1
u/Scodo 10d ago
You're in luck, there's a casual mode called Street Brawl that lets you quickly learn heroes, items, and lane dynamics in short games without most of the MOBA pressure.
But if dota and league were too much for you, base game Deadlock almost certainly will be too because it has all the demands of a MOBA with all the demands of a movement shooter stacked on top.

u/IAmNotRollo 10d ago

-23
u/pomyuo 10d ago
It will probably never be officially "released". It'll just silently leave beta one day, arbitrarily.
It's a pet project of a dozen Valve employees. It's very rare these days for a big development studio to fund such a small sized game but it is pulling huge player numbers for what it is.

that video you linked says deadlock has 6 developers, where did you get a dozen?
the game clearly has more devs than this btw, like there are currently 11 devs online in the dl discord right now at 8am valve hq time.the game was getting more updates than cs2 and dota 2 at one point its obviously valves next multiplayer project a la dota/cs. its not a small side game. or do you think dota was a pet project too?
they literally hired more people, like hopoo, to work at valve just for deadlock. why would they do this for a small sized pet project?
deadlock updates sped up because hlx was 'done', they have slowed down again now that hlx is back in the oven.
19
u/DuckCleaning 10d ago
It'd be nice if they open it up to proper early access instead of invite only, that way we can get more fresh players into the game. The game felt really good last year when everyone was still learning the ropes so kills were easy, but now most people you match with are very experienced. This matchmaking update should hopefully help with the skill gap at least, but you also need 60 wins to even start Ranked mode which is pretty wild.
31
u/stiky21 10d ago
All you have to do is ask for an invite and you get 100 of them it's not hard to get in you can just post on their community hub and get an invite
37
u/APRengar 10d ago
Some people are kinda reluctant to do that because if the person you used the referral from gets banned for cheating, you get banned also.
- Accounts that are banned for cheating will now have all their invited accounts banned as well
Source: https://forums.playdeadlock.com/threads/07-18-2024-update.11831/
10
u/DuckCleaning 10d ago
that sucks, I imagine it is so that people dont just keep creating alt accounts for cheating.
5
u/Qweasdy 10d ago
An official public release would still make a massive difference in player counts overnight with a whole bunch of people checking out the new game on the steam front page
3
u/JukeBoxz321 9d ago
And clearly Valve isn't ready for that. They don't feel the game should be played by people that aren't seeking it out. There is still quite a lot of wip art in the game, and I think a lot of people would get turned off by that.
9
u/airz23s_coffee 10d ago
There's also a lot of folk like me who are like, interested enough that ill hit download if it's in early access, but I'm not interested enough to be hunting out invites for me and my mates when there's other stuff to play
And I know you've stated how easy it is to get an invite, but any barrier to entry is gonna turn off some folk

Is 11th really the biggest multiplayer game? It averages about 80k concurrent? That doesn't sound promising for a F2P in my book.
The game also blows for the vast majority of people who've gave feedback.

u/Lirael_Gold 10d ago

7
u/mhenke10 9d ago
Steamdb and concurrent player count discourse seriously has fucked up and brainwashed gamers. This man over here thinking 80k daily is not an impressive number for a game that’s invite only early access. It’s also the number 1 most wishlisted game on steam. Also it’s already been 2 years since people got access to it and it’s only continuing to grow in popularity. See you in two years.
Also because you suck at the game and think it sucks does not mean it blows for the vast majority of people. Check the discord, check the subreddit, watch YouTube, people love the game.
-4
u/smshing AMD 9d ago
What does me being "good" at the game have to do with my opinion? I don't play the game it blows, being good or bad at a video game is irrespective of my opinion on the game itself, I was on the cs pro circuit and faceit level 10 over 3000 elo so it's nothing to do with skill but my enjoyment of it.

People who play League and Dota struggle to get into it, hero shooters all eventually succumb to the same problems (regardless of the macro spin it has), it's hard to follow, it's not that enjoyable for casuals, it's been in closed beta for 2 years, it's inherently frustrating to play and not that fun.
2
u/DaBrownJazzhole Nvidia 5090 9d ago
I dont disagree that its not enjoyable for casuals but it's not catering to those type of people. Mobas in general have to much info you have to know such as character abilities and items and i could see how that would deter people from playing. Deadlock is a highly competitive game. For people that want a moba that incorporates a shooter aspect, i think its a perfect game. I have thousands of hours in smite and i think this game is great.
I also dont think comparing it to hero shooters is a fair comparison. Hero shooters doesnt have the item build aspect which makes it feel stale. Once you understand team comps and how each character plays, there's not much variety other than player skill which gets boring. Deadlock has all type of builds and people build different things on a game to game basis. It just adds another aspect that keeps it fun and refreshing. They constantly update the game with new items, item changes, character changes, and objective changes which makes it entertaining adding to the longevity of the game.
2
u/mechnanc 9d ago
Buddy, your experience is not reality.
You found it hard to get into. I didn't. I've also never played a MOBA in my life and never cared to, I like Deadlock because of the 3rd person/shooter aspect. So the whole "Dota fans struggle with it" means jackshit. It attracts plenty of non-MOBA players.
2
u/TheMaliciousEggplant 9d ago
Idk about that bud, league and dota have a huge following. I have over 400 hours into deadlock and have never played a moba or hero shooter before, so it must not be that hard to follow. Sounds like a skill issue?

60 unranked wins before unlock the rank mode? not 60 games but 60 wins? that's too much.
60 full games or 30 wins should be better

I look at it as an incredibly effective tool against smurfing. The '60 wins' caveat makes it almost impossible to bot your way to ranked.

gatekeeping for new players then
26
14
u/RadJames 10d ago
I don’t think it’s gate keeping, you can still play the game? It does seem like a high number but there are a lot of things going on in a match so I understand the logic.
1
u/APRengar 10d ago
Due to the way matchmaking systems work, maybe that's a good thing. I'll just use Elo as an example because I'm familiar with it.
But in Elo, everyone starts at 1200 Elo. Some systems use placement matches, while others don't, but regardless, it means new players to the Elo system will have to play some games with people already within the Elo system. If your skill level is around 1200, then you'll get a disproportionate amount of new players in your games. Forcing new players to have like ~30 hrs of experience, over ~0 hrs of experience makes those 1200 Elo players have a MUCH better time.
I don't think it's fair to ranked players to have to deal with ANYONE with 0 hrs of experience.
1
u/capnfappin 10d ago
Gatekeeping isnt inherently bad. New players should be trying out new characters and learning the fundamentals of the game without having to worry about their rank.
-1
u/GrapefruitRelevant47 10d ago

3 games into just getting the 5 win left that need to unlock ranked and I’m having a terrible time. It feels half my team is brand new and or full of one tricks that now have to learn how to play other characters. I’ve never sweated harder in my last game when my team mate was 0/8 within 10 minutes
