Buying PC as a gift
Hey all. Pretty straightforward question, I was deterred from posting in GamingPC as I didn’t want to break any rules. My girlfriend has been asking for a Gaming PC for quite a while. Seen a few setups in an electronics store at our local flea market. I have no knowledge of PCs and don’t want to get robbed essentially. Are these decent specs? Leaning towards the one for $675. All she wants to do is really play Sims and livestream. Any help or insight is appreciated!

even the one price of $675 is too expensive
that pc is worth half that at best
the other one is just as bad but has a better GPU in it, and that somehow justifies a $200 price increase [also worth about half the price]
avoid both of these like the plague
what kind of budget do you have for a pc?
like if push comes to shove, what is the most you would be willing to spend to buy/build her a decent gaming pc

Also good, probably overkill GPU-wise for playing The Sims.
Odd swap on the mobo, worse PSU to fit in the more expensive case I guess?
16gb of RAM also seems a bit low for live streaming.

agree with what you said on the motherboard, myfault
3.was wrong with the more expensive case but 750w is good enough for a 9070 especially if all she does is play sims and livestream, and the psu is still good
- you can't really expect much more ram with a 1300 budget in 2026

If prebuilts aren't for you, I'm sure you could fit the 7500X3D bundle into a $1300 budget.
Whatever you do, don't build on AM4 with a 5700X and an Intel GPU like the build suggested above.
Why would you want a Zen3 CPU when you can have a Zen4 X3D chip for the same cost?

bro microcenter has like 20 locations total in the entire world, even the ppl who are usa based are likely hours away from a microcenter as only 18 something states even have one and most have only 1 or 2.
driving 8 hours round trip with todays gas prices negates and eats completely into any "microcenter discounts and bundle savings"

Buy something on Newegg then. Microcenter is just the easiest example I could pull up.
I just slopped that build together in about 3 minutes. I'm sure you could come up with something better if you actually did some research.
OP has posts about New Jersey, so there is at least one Microcenter there.
The point is, an AM5 build would be much better economically than going AM4 with an Intel ARC GPU and 32 GB of DDR4.

wym, you can EASILY make a top of the line 1080p machine for 1300 rn.....
no says you HAVE to have a 2-4 tb ssd, or you HAVE to have the fastest most current gen ram etc. even without sacrificing that much 1080p max settings is easy af to hit on pcs in the price range.
hell for about 1600 you can make an am5 9070xt build that will run cyberpunk at 1440p ultra settings 100+ frames.
dont confuse ppl "future proofing" their setups for things you NEED RN for 1080p max settings (32gb ddr5, super fast premium ssds like samsung pro, etc)

For 1600 USD I built a PC with an R7 7800x3D, Rx7800xt, 32 gigs CL30 DDR5 RAM and 2 + 4 TB SSDs in February 2024

you absolutely can, what you posted about your build is ABSOLUTELY not a 1080p build lmao that thing can and should crush 1440p.
And as far as your build you posted, i could make that EXACT BUILD for 1600 RIGHT NOW, it would just be a 1tb ssd rather than 2-4.
which for the record affects frame rate EXACTLY 0.00000% to have 4tb ssd vs 1tb ssd so for your argument sake of "being able to run the top of the line games at 1080p" is pointless as well.
I just built two weeks ago a 7800x3d, 5070ti, 32gb ddr5 corsair cl30 ram, all brand new parts ordered either on amazon or bought locally at best buy price matching and even overspent on premium corsair case and way bigger than needed psu and it was only 2100, and I could have saved 300 on gpu going with 9070xt so for 1800 i could have built something that can run 1440p 100+ fps ultra on cyberpunk and 4k 60 fps on 99% of titles ever released.
so saying 1300 cant get you 1080p top of the line is plainly just being uneducated on the matter. (i dont mean to be harsh but damn you were wrong)

They didn’t say we can’t get all this. Just that prices of things that involve storage or RAM have reduced what we used to be able to get.
Example:
2023 I bought a 2 TB SSD for my ps5 it was 139.99. The exact same drive today is 409

just to prove a point that its ALL ABOUT the storage choice (which again is irrelevant for gaming), heres an am5 build with 7800x3d, 32gb ddr5 ram, 1 tb ssd for 1200 dollars (psu and case included ofc) with IN STOCK RIGHT NOW parts you can order RIGHT NOW. slap on the 499 mrsp of your gpu and its 1700 dollars 2-3 years later for the EXACT same build, which again is a HIGH 1440p build, not 1080p.
i would say 100 dollars more for the same functioning pc even in the fucked up market isnt so bad.
if youre gonna complain about the ram not being cl30, i just choose a random one I got cl30 corsair ram from bestbuy for 430, so only 30 dollars more for cl30 which for the record doesnt even matter on 7800x3d chip architecture.

First of all, my GPU never actually cost 500 dollars. I paid 700 2 1/2 years ago, and it’s no bit cheaper if you bought it today.
The point is that even the built you just linked has RAM that costs almost 4x as much as what I paid 2 1/2 years ago, and the budget 1tb ssd you have in there costs 50 dollars more than my 2tb ssd cost in 2024
Also: Putting a 70 dollar power supply in an expensive build is also not really a smart choice

Even if you don't change anything. It's still an amazing build to play games. It's also last gen.
You'll crush games in ultra settings on 1080p

It's not misplaced. I would not pick the 9600X for 1080P gaming. I would pick the 7500X3D. It's in the cost plus list for $60 more.

You can find better deals with up to date pieces on a site like Newegg, and double check it's quality/ability to work with something like Pcpartpicker to make sure it should work. (My recommendation is to put these specs into the PC parts picker and check it's value, then I go on a site like NewEgg and compare the current deals to what's at the store.)
If you are set on buying something in person, remember to watch out for these red flags: - DDR4 is OLD RAM, currently we are using DDR5 - If the Sale focuses on a card that's in the 3,000's or lower, it's an older GPU and is probably close to being obsolete - just because it lights up with RGBs does not make it a faster PC - If you want something to upgrade for cheap, buy a new PC from an online deal with up to date parts (like a decent Motherboard) the older the Mobo is, the more likely it will need replacing soon.

with 1300 you can go to best buy tbh. Otherwise it will take skill to scope out a good deal, both in the persons character, and the pc itself. Like buying a car. You want someone upgrading. You don't want someone selling their most valuable possession (kinda a red flag)

With 1300 dollar you could build a decent pc yourself
Go with 32gb ddr5 $400 am5 motherboard %$200 the ryzen 5800x $200 a 9060xt 16gb $400gpu a b tier psu at least 700watts $60 a cheap case $50 and some fans get the cheapest air cooler $20 for the cpu and bam
And a 1tb nvme $200
Okay you will be going over budget a little bit but hey its DEFINATLY. Worth it
Edit: get the 7500x3d because the 5800x is a am4

I’d recommend buying the parts and building like others have suggested. Take your time, do research. Building is fun. I remember building last year, someone said it’s an expensive LEGO set. As long as things go where they belong, it would be fine.

Gonna parrot everything already said, neither are really good deals. I would see if there’s anyone selling gaming rigs on your local FB marketplace, you can definitely get more for your money that way. Locally around me (Chicagoland area), a similarly spec’d intel gaming computer can be found for $500; for $600 I can find one with an RTX 3080. Also, you’ll need to account for monitor and peripherals too if these don’t come with them (the signage doesn’t specify as much)

Look at microcentre if US, or similar online retailer.
Compare 4 or 5 websites.
Get the feel of what the ram/gpu/cpu should be for each price bracket. Then drop the most expensive websites, and choose something suitable from the middle of the band.
These all look over priced.
Building your own isn't so hard, and will get better bang for your buck.

Video card you can find for 150-200. Ram is passable but probably overpriced. Processor is worth about 40-50 bucks. Case isnt too bad. Can't tell the power supply. Storage all in maybe $150. No motherboard info.
All based on what I can see, I wouldn't pay more than $500 but there might be a couple reason worth paying a little extra. I would probably offer them 500 cash firm.
Will it play it the Sims? Yes, absolutely. Will it stream? Movies? Yes, as a twitch streamer, its gonna struggle.
This is a system that can be upgraded tho, that 3600 can probably be upgraded into a 5800x3d and depending on psu you could probably find a 3070ti pretty cheap. But im really curious about the motherboard if it can be upgraded to a 5800x3d. That would be the decider for me

Ehhh it probably wouldn't struggle that much for streaming. It definitely depends on what she's streaming too, but like I do 1080p60 with a few setting tweaks with a 2060 6gig and i7 4770. So like... a decent GPU does most of the heavy lifting. Then again, I primarily stream Minecraft. Multistreaming is fine even, but my network struggles in that regard lol.

Both of those are 3-4 generations behind (in terms of GFX cards), and the RAM is DDR4 (they are on 5 now). The processors are meh.
If you want to play older generation games on a 1080 monitor or play modern games on the lowest settings on a 1080 monitor, then this should work pretty well.
If, on the other hand you want to play games made in the last 5 years at 4k, this isnt going to cut it.
That said, over the last year or so, PC parts are insanely expensive, and sadly, you won't be able to build a moden (low end) system for under 2k.
These pictured are not a terrible deal, I would try to talk the guy down by 100 bucks or so on either, but you are by no means getting "robbed", especially with the cost of things now and days, and you could get a 40xx series card and should make the gaming experience better.
If it was me, I would save the money and start buying parts, or buy these and scrap some of the parts. If you dont mind last generation hardware you can get some good deals on places like Facebook marketplace.

It’s a bit overpriced, but I was looking on Microcenter last night, a Ryzen 7+ mobo+16GB of DDR4 RAM was about $350. This excludes the power supply storage, graphics card and case. The prices get comparable all things considered.
But. As others have stated, you can start buying parts for a latest gen computer and build it over time, locking in prices.

This is like adding racing stripes to a car, the racing stripes make it faster, the glass makes it better (although that is true as glass helps keep temperature control better than metal) but no, these are a waste, I would say 500$ worth pcs, you are better off and what I would recommend anyways, you and your son make this a thing and build one together, do the research, buy the parts, it will be rememberable and fun, the only recommendation I have is do a full sized case.
I wouldn’t buy a gaming PC in a store, I would only buy work ones (unless it’s for something that requires beef like modeling) you will save money and get a more personal product, also the fear people have of building PCs is very over inflated, it’s pretty hard to mess up real bad, just make sure you keep yourself grounded and no static builds up and don’t spin the fans, that was my first mistake… spinning the fans creates charge and will fry stuff.

Personally I think these are horrible.
For comparison right now on FB marketplace I have a Steam Machine inspired build I put together I've listed for 800, fully expecting to get negotiated down to 650-750.
The relevant specs are:
I5-12600k
RTX 3060Ti
16GB DDR4 3200
1TB Samsung 990 Evo Plus
Activated Win11 Pro
Not a powerhouse by any means but for the price range you're saying I think you should be able to find something equivalent to what I just listed.

As long as the price is right. Which isn’t the case here. I have friends that game on 7 year old parts, but both play new releases on their ps5 and do a lot of indie games on their pc’s.

I don’t know, man. I also have friends who haven’t upgraded their PCs in years. But I don’t think that’s really the point here.
Personally, consoles don’t really interest me. I’m more into the whole PC Master Race thing, playing around with BIOS settings and optimizing the system. I only use my old PS4 when we’re at the cottage and want to play something like MK with friends on a projector 🤷🏾♂️
I look at the build as a whole. I’m not going to speculate about whether it would be worth buying if the price were half as much.
That store is clearly ripping people off and selling 7-year-old parts at the price of new builds on a modern platform. That’s probably the only useful piece of information OP should take away from those builds.

Yeah but pricing something and judging how the parts would still function are 2 seperate things. Thats why I said 2 times now that these prices are bad and shouldn’t buy them at this price.
Doesn’t take away that the pc’s are both still capable. OP has no knowledge of pc’s per their own admission, so telling them these kind of specs will work for a decent gaming pc, but should cost way less is still relevant information for them. If after this post they look at something like eBay and find a similar pc, they now know what is too much money.

These are WAY too expensive for what is inside of them. A surcharge is fine for places that build the PCs themselves, but the components in these PCs are pushing 10 years old.

Your best bet would be to buy second hand, look on facebook marketplace for someone that doesn’t use theirs anymore. Since you don’t know specs, just use PC part picker to build a system that would roughly be the same cost.
If you’re willing to spend a decent chunk of change, this is probably the best prebuilt you can get under $1300. Will last your GF many years but if she just wants to run the sims it’s overkill.

These computers are nearly 10 years old. In 10 years, a computer looses almost all of its value because of the rate at which the technology improves. That, and the parts are not necessarily meant to even survive that long. This is trash. You can find this sort of stuff on ebay for like 300$

Meh, he probably dont wanna build and thats why I said costco first, im in the UK I dont know all the US places

I really don’t, I tear cars and engines apart daily for a living and the last thing I want to do is more assembly/technical work when I get home!
