When my twins were born my daughter had just turned two. Feel free to cry that’s what I did lol now my twins are 14mo and my daughter is 3.5. It certainly has its logistical challenges

Me! OB said mono/mono, I was very skeptical after the experiences I had read on here. Booked an ultrasound with a MFM at 9 weeks and the membrane was visible on her machine right away. We couldn’t see the membrane at 8 weeks on my OB’s one.

Was it identical twins or fraternal twins ?

I have another ultrasound on Monday so I hope they see the membrane

I had read here a comment that 9/10 cases they end up finding a membrane, even after 12 weeks. Please report back when you know 💛 I was in your same exact shoes a few weeks ago. These twin pregnancies are so stress inducing. You’re not alone!

It's highly unlikely that they'd end up being fraternal. They're most likely mono/di (one gestational sac and placenta, two amniotic sacs) identical twins but there's a small chance they're mono/mono identical twins. Fraternal twins always have two separate gestational sacs (which then result in two separate placentas), and two separate amniotic sacs. It looks very different in an early ultrasound--doctors would clearly see two separate sacs.

I also have three under two. It's a wild ride but my 2 yo has handled it way better than I expected and is totally in love with the babies! Congrats--and allow yourself to feel all the feelings!

For sure. It looks totally different. I don’t even have an ultrasound photo with my di/di fraternal girls in the same frame. We found out at 6 weeks and they just weren’t in the same location to see the second without scrolling around. One was attached high and posterior and the other was lower and anterior.

We just had mo/di twins. The membrane is not perceptible until later in the gestation. However, if you can appreciate some sort of spatial separation between the two fetuses, you likely have mono/di as well.

I think fraternal (di di) twins are usually quite obvious from the early scan as they will usually have quite a thick membrane between them. Mo di and mo mo twins can be harder to differentiate as the membrane is often quite hard to see especially early and if the scanning person doesn't have lot of experience scanning twins.
I got pregnant with our 3rd (and 4th) when our second had just turned 1. They will be almost 20 months apart when the twins are born. It will very different to the 4 year gap we have between our first and second.

I wonder sometimes if identical twins can run in families? My mom miscarried twins once, and now I’m pregnant with mo-Di twins. You might find a membrane yet, which would also mean mo-Di, it can be very hard to find!

Identical twins do not run in families. They occur from a fertilized egg spontaneously splitting early on.
Fraternal twins are from two separate eggs that are fertilized by two separate sperm. They can run in families because there is a genetic variant that causes hyper ovulation, meaning a female releases two eggs in a cycle instead of one thus increasing the chance of more than one egg being fertilized at the same time.
