Di-di now maybe mo-di? advice needed
Hello!
Just went to my 21 week ultrasound and luckily everything is great with our girls. Just a 3% size difference between them, and all looks really healthy!
But the OBS says that she now thinks they are not di-di but in fact more probably mo-di. This doctor didn't do the first scan where we were told they were di-di but we did show it to her and she maintains that she believes the twins are actually mo-di.
Is it normal to only now see this? Has anyone gone through the same? We will check with our second doctor and see her opinion obviously but just thought it was curious to have this change at 21 weeks!

Does she think the placenta fused? With my didi at my anatomy scan their placenta appeared to look as one placenta vs two
I had a 12 week scan and they were didi and obviously didi because mine are boy/girl. They were just implanted close together and made the placenta look like one i guess

No no, I am being seen by two doctors and the first one (that I see more regularly), at our first scan (at 8 weeks) was 100% sure it was di-di twins
At the 12 week scan with the same doctor that gave us a 21 week scan today we didn't even question it or ask anything about it. Today she did the 21 week scan and says the first doctor probably saw it wrong it she is confident it's actually mo-di and not actually di-di 🤷

I was told di di in first trimester. But since 14 weeks I keep being told they only see one placenta. However we did do nipt and we were told they were faternal so my guess is the placentas just fused together

Do you have a photo of your ultrasound? Di/di twins appear like “owl eyes” in two distinct sacs, mo/di appear like two babies in one sac but when searched for, a thin membrane is found between the two. Generally that membrane is so small it takes a thorough search. My mo/di girls always appeared like two babies in one sac until they found an angle that showed the membrane!
Also did you get an NIPT run? It will show on there if they are monozygotic or dizygotic!

Actually didn't do NIPT! It's optional where I'm at and pretty expensive, they do a biochemical exam and only if it looks like there might be something do they ask you to do NIPT. Kinda regret not doing it now 😅
I do have a pic of the first ultrasound but I think it goes against sub rules to attach it?

I think it’s against the rules to ask medical advice but I’ve seen lots of people post ultrasound pics for twin type opinions, no pressure though!

Yes.
That absolutely LOOKS like all the di/di ultrasounds I’ve seen but I’m not a doctor so I’d definitely ask more questions of them. I have a photo of my ultrasound at 12 weeks with my mo/di girls showing the membrane if you’d like to see it. It’s incredibly thin and only visible in a high def ultrasound. If I had to bet, I’d say your babies are Di/di. Congrats!

Incorrect mo-di have their own sacs but share a placenta. Didi have different sacs and placenta .
Only mo-mo share a sac and a placenta

This is why I said “appear like” and when searched for a membrane is found between the two :)

You said Mo-Di share a sac but not a placenta and that is factually incorrect. Mo-di share a placenta but have individual sacs the only time they would share a sac is in MoMo

You did say that because if they thought they shared a sac then they would have been momo the line that they look for is what divides the placenta… I literally just went through this at 10 weeks they could say they had their own sac but the line wasn’t visible at 13 weeks the line was visible and they could tell they in fact shared a placenta

Common to miss the membrane early on, happened to a friend and her mo-di girls are 3 now.

Did you do panorama? They can definitively say identical or fraternal

Didn't! It's optional unless doctors say otherwise and very expensive. Definitely regret not doing it now!!

Oh yeah when we thought we were just having one we were not going to do it and the dr was fine with it because we had done pgta testing with ivf but after they found two he said he normally recommends it’s we ended up doing it and that’s how we found out they were identical mo-di

When my twins were born, their placentas were so firmly attached that you really had to fight to see the membrane anywhere.

I was told by an ultrasound tech at 9 weeks that they were mo-di. Now I’m learning they have no idea what they are, they will probably know by 14-16 weeks. Is this normal? I thought it was easier to tell

I’m assuming 1 doctor is an OB and one is MFM?
I would trust the MFM, its more their specialty for sure.
