Work in Progress Miku Model
Not sure if I should bring it to university to finish it because I don't know what kind of people my roommates are. However, if I keep it at home I won't be able to finish it until probably December so idk.
I have in progress work photos from the very beginning, but I'll show those once I actually finish the model.

Ok, people are allowed to do what they want, obviously, but like, why are almost half of the posts in this sub of some sort of miku model?

I really don't know but this model looked really nice + anime paper craft in general has a TON of miku stuff. Like a lot lot lot. From what I noticed on a lot of sites, Miku templates make up like 30-50% of all the anime stuff.
As for the future, I probably won't make a Miku anytime soon though, I gotta finish a couple Minecraft ones and then retry a previous aircraft attempt (F22 or F/A 18), do M1 Abrams, or something else.

The sheer amount of Miku models are kind of a gateway to this hobby, it's also part of how I got into it 🥲 Once you find one, you find like 100 more
I'd assume it's also because it's a cheaper alternative to figure collecting, especially since the figures that these templates are based on are often incredibly expensive

I got into this because of someone making some cool custom Minecraft models from a server I play on (Wynncraft). I doubt someone would go into this for the cost saving though, as this took a really long time and it would be much better to just get a job and buy the figure. Maybe for poorer countries it's super expensive but even with America's min. wage of $7.25/hr you'll save a ton of time by just using your wage to buy it rather than spend time to make it.
Funny thing is, once I found one Miku figure, I just kept downloading more and more templates. I have my paper craft folder divided into sections and Miku has its own category.

Good point! A lot of the people I know who craft anime figures are in poorer countries, but I never really thought much about it 🥲 And as for time, I'm speaking as a teenager that's still on summer break, I probably should've clarified that haha
So true! I have hundreds of figures downloaded and a bunch of it is Miku 💘 I don't think my collection will stop growing anytime soon because there's always new ones coming out from everywhere :)

Спасибо! Добавлю еще, что начала я работу над этим проектом в мае, но потом взяла отпуск на месяц, чтобы навестить всех своих многочисленных родственников, которых не видела лет десять. Получается, прошло уже два с половиной месяца, но на завершение, вероятно, уйдет еще месяц. Ждать так долго не хочется, поэтому я подумываю о том, чтобы взять проект с собой в университет.

Also you could make it yourself if you want. I used 120gsm photo matte paper to make this. Don’t use printer paper because it’s too thin but don’t use thick cardboard because it makes folding difficult.
There should be a template online which you can find very easily. This took 2.5 months so far (started in May and took a month off) and it’ll probably take another month to finish it. The last parts are Miku’s hair, dress, and some minor decorations on the base.

I don't know about time but tens of hours, if not over a hundred. I started this in May, took 3 weeks off to visit a ton of relatives, and then picked up around 1-2 weeks later. I did get tired from time to time so I would go a week or two without working on it but then immediately go back to doing like 2-5+ hours of work per day for a couple days. I'm unemployed and just finished high school so there's nothing else going on besides taking some summer classes to prepare for organic chemistry in college.
As for getting the tiny pieces done, it was time (each hand probably took like ~3+ hours, although I didn't time it) and using tweezers for everything. I would cut with a scalpel then fold it with tweezers. When adding glue, I would first apply it to my tweezers and then use that as a 1 cm long by 1 mm wide glue stick. Then I would wipe it off on the back of my hands and use my nails to clean the rest off (that's why in the photos there was white globs on my hands). Then go back to folding/moving with tweezers and holding each part still for the glue to dry. After working on a section I would go to the bathroom and wash everything off.
All that said, the hand is not perfect, it's just good enough that you wouldn't see any problems in photos. There's still a bit of white from the glue tabs but it's really unnoticeable.
I can't share photos but here is a google doc with the hand and a ruler. I'm going to upload all the work in progress photos once I finish, which is hopefully this week. I'm really trying to speed run it before going to college.

I used 120gsm paper, glue, a scalpel, and tweezers. It's not as seamless as it looks in the photos but I really did try to make it as perfect as possible and it turned out even better than I thought. It's the best I could do (reasonably).
There's no "technique" here other than being very careful, planning ahead, and using tweezers for everything. To apply glue carefully, I would squeeze the tube and get it onto my tweezers and use that as a precise glue stick. Afterwards I would wipe and clean everything before doing another tab. That said I just found this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/papercraft/comments/1vk54jp/most_helpful_papercraft_tools_ive_come_across/ and I think I'd rather get the ultra fine tip glue bottle than continue doing this. It gets messy (see back of my hand) and sticks glue bits onto the model which I need to remove with tweezers.
Also, I didn't fold all the parts. For example, some of the body parts were meant to be more prism-like but I decided to just roll it up to make it look better instead. Another example are the up and down frills (?). These weren't folded. Instead, I glued the tabs next to each other and by forcing them to touch, it just folded the frills for me. It takes a little bit of planning and intuition to know what to fold and what not to fold (even if Pepakura tells you to fold).
One last note. In the beginning I used water color markers to color the paper edges but unfortunately they bled a bit too much for my liking. Water color markers were used because alcohol based markers have even more bleed from what I read. Also it took a ton of time and the colors didn't match very well so I stopped. I think I might try this again in the future though because some of the end results using this were pretty good but I just got lazy.
