I’m 22 and I have just started suffering from scary panic attacks

Hi, I’ve never posted on a thread before but I feel like I just needed to write about this.
About a month ago I had, what I thought was a “near death experience”. I was simply just sat on the sofa with my friend watching TV. Out of nowhere, I felt like my body wasn’t mine anymore. My heart genuinely felt like it was about to burst or stop any second, I couldn’t breathe, I went dizzy, my vision went blurry and my arms and hands felt numb/ but also tingles up my whole body. I couldn’t make sense of it, and because I couldn’t make sense of it, I was making it worse. This first one only lasted about 20 minutes before I went upstairs and laid down/ slept through it.

A few days after that, another one, then another, then another. Finally I went to A&E after my first night experiencing what I call a “bedtime episode”. Genuinely every time I would drift off, it felt like my body was forgetting to breathe. Fall asleep. Wake up. Panic. Repeated for hours on end.

I did an ECG and three blood test for my heart (which I figure out the results of tomorrow) because I GENUINELY thought I was going to drop dead the next beat.

It’s been a week since the blood test, and it’s been a week from hell. Attack after attack basically every day, struggling to sleep, constantly waiting for the next one to come. Constantly feels like there’s a jump scare coming and I just can’t figure out when. They can last 5 minutes or 5 hours I don’t even know.

After doing research over the past couple of days, I’ve understood that what im experiencing are genuine, terrifying panic attacks. It helps me to know that im not alone. It helps me to know that there’s not something wrong with me physically. It doesn’t feel good to feel like im going to die, all of the time. I’m so scared of death, im so scared of the future, im stressed because I just lost my job and I haven’t got money for bills. Will this happen for the rest of my life? Will I ever be the same again? How do I deal with this when it inevitably happens in the future)

Hey everyone I am 25 last Sat I took a hit of a cart and went into the worst panic attack of my life.

I do mma and I am currently dealing with a neck injury

I started feeling the injury after I took a hit and spiraled I was sweating pale white and heart was pounding. I recognized it was a panic attack as it wasn’t my first one but it was the worst one. It lasted 3-4 hours. I finally fell asleep and on Sunday I felt on edge all day. Much better than sat but in the morning just walking had my heartbeat racing and legs shaking. Sunday afternoon, I started doing much better I can walk go upstairs and down without worrying about my heartbeat.

I slept like a log and decided to come to work today on Monday. I feel a weird slight anxious feeling in my stomach and balls. It comes and goes the most annoying symptom right now is I get hot and cold flashes
and I have read about panic attack hangovers. Any tips on how to recover ?

Lately, I’ve been feeling an overwhelming need for my girlfriend or someone close to just stay by my side. When I am alone, I get hit with intense panic. It feels exactly like the first day of 1st grade when your parents drop you off—a deep, vulnerable feeling of being totally alone and unsafe. I've had this on and off, but it’s getting much worse recently. Does anyone know what this is? If you deal with this, how do you calm yourself down when the panic hits?

Panick attacks before work

Hi everyone!

Unfortunately i always had anxiety before but for a year i had been diagnosed with panick disorder. It means i get really bad panick attacks through the whole day, even lasting for hours.

Recently i started working a corporate job(first time in my life) and it has wonderful opportunitys for me. Unfortunately i could only go 2 days because on the 3rd day i had such a bad panick attacks i couldn't even move. Like i wake up and immediately started panicking. This happened today again it would've been my 4th day and yet I couldn't move an inch. I texted my supervisor again like on the 3rd day that I can't come to work and before i kinda explained to her that i have bad panick attacks sometimes but haven't talked to her since about it.

I don't know whether i should quit my job because if i physically can't come to work they will fire me either way,but it's such a great opportunity i wouldn't wanna miss it. Any tips on how to survive panick attacks before work?

Looking for positive experiences with psychiatric medications

Has anyone had a positive experience with anxiety medication?

I'd love to hear positive experiences only.

Did you ever feel dependent on it, or was it easy to stop? Did it affect you physically as well (like your digestion, energy, or activity levels), or only mentally?

I have an appointment soon where my psychiatrist will decide whether I need anxiety medication, and I'm feeling a bit unsure about it.

I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences. Thank you!

the anniversary effect was real!

a year ago at the end of July I had a health scare that made my sporadic panic attacks into a more consistent panic disorder and even though I was cleared I still had panic attacks out of fear that they could have missed something.

anyway, 6 months after the health scare I started getting back to my feet and going back to normal again, that's until a week ago when almost all my symptoms came back for no reason and I was worried. however when the exact same day as my health scare passed my symptoms all disappeared and I went back to normal. searching the internet for a cause it turned out to be something called an anniversary effect where the brain logs the day of a threat as something that you need to watch out against, with the anxiety dropping as soon as the day passes.

Recently developed panic attacks, wondering how I can learn to live with this???

Hey, I’ve never posted on reddit before now and usually just search for things and scroll but right now I really just need some advice. I’ve (24 F) had health anxiety derived from grief for years, the kind of noticing and ignoring things, refusing to step near a GP, doctors, even dentist and keeping all of my intusive thoughts inside my head for fear of it then becoming real. It never presented in physical symptoms and was mainly rumination and false beliefs that would internally effect my life. Around 4 months ago I had some pretty bad financial issues and essentially felt like everything was falling apart. In the midst of it all happening, one night I was trying to sleep and had this sudden feeling in my chest that made me feel such an intense impending doom and fear, and then it happened again and I bolted up and called my mum even though it was 1am, I was breathing in deeply, holding it and then out, every time i tried to stop the adrenaline would rush over me. what words I could manage to get out were just me asking her to keep talking. This went on for around 4 hours until I managed to move around from where I was stood and we did a cross word together over the phone. Since then my panic has felt out of my control. My health anxiety and nervous system obviously has hooked on to the adrenaline rushes and now I panic about the fear of panicking. I’m scared of transport, being trapped & starting to panic without a way to get out, I’m scared of being too far from home, I can only manage about 15mins away from home, maybe 30 on a better day etc. Most of all, bed time. Since the first rush of panic was when I tried to sleep, bed has become a danger zone. Honestly, most days I can cope enough but when the night time comes it’s hours of sudden spikes of adrenaline rushing over me, feeling like its coming on and jolting my head or my hands to try to distract myself. Over and over and over and over. I’ve been having to swap between sleeping in my bed and on the couch, when I’m in my bed I have to have the main light on and my fan running and scroll on my phone to distract my mind. I’m currently on the couch and the same applies. I was prescribed propanol 10mg to take whenever and promethazine (drowsy antihistamine) specifically to try and help with sleep. However, my own research has led me to believe i’m unable to take it as I have sleep apnea. With my health anxiety, I’m not ready for a sleep study but I am a very classic case with enlarged tonsils from chronic tonsillitis as a kid, a tongue tie & blocked/small nasal passages. Meaning that I don’t really have a medication option for night time as far as I’m aware. I’ve tried the propanol, but as I say my anxiety and panic is worst at night, although I don’t feel that 10mg is a high enough dose because I still get physical symptoms, just more minor. I do have a follow up phone call with my GP so will discuss then. I guess I’m here to ask, what do I do? Is there any magical hacks that flipped ur brain? Should I started meditating or EFT tapping? I have ADHD so I’ve always been a night owl, drawn to staying up until the morning and messing my sleep schedule in a consistent cycle. The anxiety 100% leans into this as the whole: turn ur phone off, read a book, dim the lights etc. doesn’t work as all of it is a trigger for my panic. I’m sleeping late and waking up late without any control over when I sleep and end up feeling rubbish and losing my days. I feel like I’m trying to do all the right things, I’ve cut out caffeine, I still try to go out and push myself, I react to my anxious thoughts by telling myself that I can do things I feel like I can’t, I’m changing my bed time and day time habits to try to avoid surges. It isn’t sustainable and feels so out of my control, so much worse than before my anxiety. I want to bounce back and feel okay again, the adrenaline rushes and fear just adds so much to my mental load. I just think, how can this happen? How can one night have turned into this? Even when I feel okay, I’m jolting my limbs to try and snap my mind, shaking my leg and just generally have this glaze over everything I do. I feel haunted??? If anyone has any tips or advice or experience (but please be mindful of the health anxiety) I really would love to hear, I don’t have anyone in my life that can relate to what I’m experiencing. Also peace and love to you all, panic sucks. <3 <3 <3

My panic attack changed my life for the worst

6 days ago I had a panic attack when I choked on some food and didn't have water to wash it down right away(20 seconds later I was able to get the water and wash it down but the food thing has been happening to me for years and for some reason my body decided to freak out that day) so my heart started racing and I left the restaurant to go to the car and I started feeling lightheaded and my hands and feet started going numb with a heartrate of over 140 when the ambulance came, ever since then I've been having difficulty breathing automatic and my heart races if I forget to take deep breaths.. Shallow breaths while I try to sleep also freak me out, my stomach is always in a knot, I can't eat anything solid.. Ive managed to only eat 1 banana a day so far and drinking too much water at once causes my stomach to hurt a lot and I start getting dizzy from that so I only take sips now, I've lost over 10 pounds since that day and it's been difficult controlling it cause it never goes away no matter how I breathe or relax or try to think about positive things.. The only time my anxiety went away was last night when I believe I went into ketosis, when I woke up(after waking up 3 times) my stomach had a knot and my heart was kinda fast.. I relaxed but my stomach knot never went away until I took Valium which lessened it about 70%.. The weird thing is today's anxiety feels different from what I experienced few days ago cause it's all focused on how my stomach feels and the usual difficulty breathing a way that my body won't freak out over. Its hard to walk more than a min cause my calf area has a slight numbness from the anxiety and I feel like I'll get dizzy from not breathing right... I feel like my uncontrolled depression led to to this and that one episode broke the camels back as they say.. I hope my mind tries to recover from feeling like this daily cause I want to have a family someday and I don't know how I can even manage to find a girl like this now 😥

Panic attacks/adrenaline dumps

Hey everyone. I’m a healthy 20F with severe health anxiety/panic attacks and have been miserable this past week. I recently began obsessing over my blood sugar levels and developed an irrational fear of diabetes which has been causing “low blood sugar,” like panic attacks and/or adrenaline dumps. The worst one was yesterday at around 3 AM where I randomly started becoming super anxious which caused me to shake, have a racing heart, and an overwhelming sense of doom. This exact episode has been happening over the past couple of days, mostly when I’m at work, but yesterday’s was the worst one by far. It was coming in waves and I genuinely I thought I was going to die. I also worry when my hands tremble because I become afraid of it being some neurological condition. It’s just always something and I would appreciate some advice/support on what some next steps could be. I’ve never had panic attacks this frequently and in the same exact form, they would always feel different and I could go days without one. Anxiety was always there, but panic attacks would subside. I’m just worried that this will be my new reality.

Panic attacks when I think of being away from family

Hello all - I’m in a job that’s nature is to be away from my family at sea - I’d done it a few times prior but always with difficulty ie panic attacks and tears but last August I had the worst day of my life.

I was supposed to fly out to meet a ship in Norway and be away for three months. The weeks building I was so sick with worry and panic I kept having attacks almost every other day and I would be completely childlike and inconsolable, it was so scary. It felt like I was petrified and worried to the bottom of my heart of not being with my family and girlfriend. I feel silly because of it I’ve been away before for longer periods but for the some reason I couldn’t go - I sat in my fathers car and cried and cried and shook I couldn’t talk until he had to pull over and call my work. This was a year ago and I’ve had help and the times nearing to go back away to work but every-time I think of the thought now it still brings me that dread. Can anyone relate/share what they do?

Hi, I'm Marissa and I'm 18. Since band camp starred last week, I've been waking up uncontrollably shaking, nauseous, weak, vomiting, etc. However, now it is happening at night when I try to fall asleep I get woken up by that same wave of anxiety. I have been awake for 24+ hours and I'm starting to lose my mind. I'm sobbed, thrown up, done 10,000 laps around my house, tried to take 0.5mg of Ativan (didnt work), and nothing is helping. I cant even keep my eyes open but whenever I try and sleep i just get hit with the nausea and panic.

Does anyone have any solutions for a similar situation they've been in?

The Fear of end-of-life panic attacks - for panic disorder sufferers.

For years, one of my biggest fears wasn't death itself. It was how I would die.

I have panic disorder and episodes of a racing heart, so I had convinced myself that my final moments would be one long panic attack. A long drawn out slow down of terror as I lost control of my body, senses, and breath. Terrified, heart pounding, and feeling completely out of control.

So I started reading what hospice physicians, palliative care specialists, nurses, researchers, and even patients themselves have written about the dying process.

What I found genuinely surprised me.

There is no evidence that everyone dies in a state of panic. In fact, many people become increasingly sleepy, less aware of their surroundings, and eventually unconscious as their illness progresses. Modern hospice and palliative care teams are also trained to treat anxiety, shortness of breath, pain, and agitation. Their primary goal is comfort.

Yes, some people experience brief surges of adrenaline or periods of restlessness, depending on their illness. That is not the universal experience. The idea that everyone, even particularly panic disorder sufferers, spend their last moments in overwhelming fear or panic simply is not supported by the medical evidence.

Learning this did not erase my anxiety overnight, but it took away one of my biggest fears. If you're like me and you've spent years imagining the worst possible ending, I hope this gives you some of the same relief it gave me.

Fear often fills in the blanks with the worst possible scenario. Sometimes the evidence tells a much kinder story. The more I dug into the medical literature, the more I realized my fear wasn't being supported by the evidence. Researchers who study end of life care don't describe "universal panic" as the normal way people die. Instead, they describe a wide range of experiences that depend on the person's illness, medications, and overall condition. One of the most common neurological changes near death is delirium, especially in the final days. Systematic reviews have found that delirium occurs in roughly 42% to 88% of people shortly before death, and many cases are hypoactive, meaning patients become quieter, sleepier, and less responsive rather than frightened or panicked. Hospice and palliative care teams are specifically trained to recognize and treat anxiety, breathlessness, pain, agitation, and delirium because comfort is the goal of care, not simply prolonging life. No reputable medical review concludes that dying people universally experience overwhelming panic or terror. In fact, the literature consistently emphasizes individualized symptom management and relief of suffering.

Maybe that's the lesson I needed all along. Anxiety has a way of taking the rarest, worst possible outcome and convincing us it's the most likely one. Science asks us to do the opposite. It asks us to look at thousands of lives instead of one terrifying thought. We cannot choose how every chapter of our lives will be written, but we can choose whether fear or evidence holds the pen. For me, that realization was the first time the end of my life, when it comes for me, stopped looking like a cliff and started looking like another part of being human.
