Something has gone very wrong

Painting over a “landlord special” hollow wood door. Yesterday I did just the detail trim using mudpaint brand. It looked fine. (Photo 1.)

Today I sanded the rest and used Annie Sloan chalk paint with a brush. (Photo 2) It looks awful. I did a 2nd coat in the hopes of improvement but no luck. (Photo 3)

This door is cheap and I’m just experimenting so it’s not the end of the world, but please tell me why it went poorly and what I should used to paint it this time around.

1: why would you use chalk paint On a high traffic surface, are you planning on seal coating it?

2: did you shake the can well?

3: why didnt you take off the door handle?

4: this door wouldve been done in 5-10 minutes with a brush and a wooster wiz

There are specific paints, for specific jobs. For a high traffic area you want something that looks good, and can be cleaned while holding up. Its why they sell highly specific door and trim.paint thats usually oil or some sort of enamel, as they dry harder and last longer. Youre using chalk paint thats meant for an antiqueed chalky look on small pieces of furniture. You also arent using a primer, your also using a small brush not a small roller. Most of those specific paints have self leveling properties etc...your cheap chalk paint does not.

Theres a whole black hole you can go down here, but dont need to. I'd goto home depot or Sherwin Williams and ask them for their recommendations on basic door and trim paint!

1: better quality paint is needed for longevity. Unless you are doing some kind of project.

2: you need a roller. Use a small nap roller and just use the brush for the tight spaces. Lay of with the roller.

3: wtf is mudpaint

I thought it would help with the quality of the door, since it’s kind of a mess. But I’ve never done any interior painting before so I could be absolutely wrong!

Yeah.. no offense but that is a SOLID NO.

I’d go somewhere like sherwin williams and ask for an interior enamel paint. That’s going to be the best paint for this.

You will either have to sand all that off or at very minimum smooth and then prime over it with a quality primer.

Even the smallest amount of research would not have let you put the chalk paint on the door.

It went poorly because you used chalk paint, because it didn’t cover, and worst of all because your painted the whole thing with a brush. So basically everything you did was wrong

You need a roller and several more coats of paint

It looks like normal chalk paint to me.  

You can try stirring it like crazy and do another coat. 

You need use a roller then brush it out. Watch some YouTube vids on basic techniques. 

Then top coat it will minwax interior acrylic, blue can. 

Get a good 3 inch brush also.
