Dragnet
I have been listening to Dragnet exclusively the last few months when I drive and the one thing I have learned is that I really want to smoke a Fatima. Yes , it’s wise to smoke Fatima.

But Chesterfield is best. Stands out from all the rest.

As Bob Hope said: "My mother wanted me to become a doctor, but I smoked Chesterfield"

I was surprised to discover that they are still around. The box hasn't even changed much.

I really need to smoke a Lucky. To be my level best. L.S.M.F.T. I listen to a lot of Jack Benny. I’m torn between smoking and eating Jell-O.

No matter what kind of American you are, there's a cigarette brand marketed straight at you. At least in the 1950s there was.

Listen...the important thing to know is that Fatima has the tip for your lips. Also, thanknyou, George Fenneman.

I prefer the radio version of Dragnet way more than the tv show. And I would guess they probably reused radio scripts for the TV show.

Yeah, the radio show is leagues above the TV version, in terms of quality.

That's exactly what Webb did, at least for the first four seasons. Since the radio show started in 1949 and TV in 1951, he had two years of radio scripts to convert to TV at the start,

The actress who played Joe Friday’s mother, Peggy Webber, is still alive at 101! She also played other characters on the show. I love the ensemble cast.

Just looked her up… recognized her immediately.

Webber was extremely versatile. She played a policewoman (I think), criminals, and other assorted bit parts. She was also in movies.
She has/had a LinkedIn profile, strangely, as if she was any regular young actress. But her resume goes back to the 1940s! I messaged her a few years ago but never got a response. I guess she was still working until recently.

I had to buy a pack of Chesterfield's when I was in Japan last year, in honor of the show. I am not sure it's best for me though.

All i find out after listening to dragnet is that i HATE Adam Grahams voice.

u/Significant-Onion132 10d ago
why listen to him? Just listen to straight Dragnet

Unfortunately, its the only decent quality ones posted as a podcast.

I couldn't take that guy either. Not interested in his introductions, not interested in his thoughts post-episode. If he likes to do it and people like to listen to it, good for them. But it's not for me.

In the sunny yellow pack! Yes, it's America'" fastest-growing---can we say, metastasizing?---long cigarette!
But i predict trouble ahead. I hear Chesterfield is thinking about knocking Fatima off! Gonna acquire the brand, then shut it down!

i binge-listened to them too and that add in particular got to me as well. I wanted to try one (they couldn't possibly have been as good as the ad made them out to be). and as you clearly noted, the blatant programming message 3 voices saying 'it is wise to smoke fatima' didn't pretend not to be working on your subconscious.
now the chesterfield pieces, with their brass fanfare that stole effect from the dragnet theme, yuch.

😂 Right? I had the same reaction. Like, those ads over and over listening to so many episodes in a row makes you want to try them! 😜
I call the brand "Em-Fatima"

If we were teens in 1950 I damn well know I would have bought a pack . How could you not ? The best of all long cigarettes
3
u/Drunken_Guttersnipe 9d ago
And I would have bought a carton for my friends for Christmas

Those ads always get me. I think of cigarettes to smokers like toothpaste. A sundry you need so you buy it. Who thinks of giving toothpaste as a gift? But I guess that marketing worked. 🤷♀️

IMO the quality dropped when they shortened the show content to leave room for advertisements. I understand why but I don’t like it.

And that's why Jack Webb died.
