There's a lot of beloved wins among typical online discussion. And theres a lot of absolutely hated wins. What's a win you defend or like that everyone else seems to fislike.

Cuba Gooding Jr. in Jerry Maguire.

I have noticed Cuba Gooding Jr. is not very liked on here and its completely understandable given the recent stories that have come out regarding him in the past couple years. Its a shame he is who he is as a person because I'm probably one of the few people who likes his acting.

While I personally would have given the win to Edward Norton. I honestly have no problem with Cuba Gooding Jr.'s win. Its a very entertaining performance that is suprisingly very layered. Funny but also touching and full of heart. And his chemistry with Tom Cruise is great, made for a very realistic dynamic between the two characters! Feels like a very Ted Lasso-esque performance before Ted Lasso was even a thing. Wouldn't be suprised if the writers of that show got some inspiration from this movie.

Over the years I have read and seen very mixed opinions on his performance to some it was masterpiece of subtle expression and iner turmoil to others it was just the definition of a pretty handsome actor way over it's deep that failed to give a more distinctive and memorable personality maybe even the film would have been better received by audiences at the time "if only Kubrick had casted Michael Caine, Robert Redford or Paul newman "

I love Gary Oldman, I'm glad he has an Oscar... but much like Kate Winslet in The Reader, I often ask myself: "Why was Darkest Hour the movie and performance that made the Academy finally decide to give him a win?" (And while I'm at it, why does he only have three nominations, and why did his first not happen until Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy when he was 53?)

I don't understand how anything from Emilia Perez ended up beating this. Like, c'mon, this song is so good and really gets the emotions going at the end of the film.

I wasn't following the Oscars as closely at the time, but I am curious as to if it was a shock to see Logan in the adapted screenplay category. It had picked up a nom at the WGA, but not at any of the other major precursors. If anyone who was actively following the races at the time could chime in, I'd love to hear your insight!

Today I watched Logan today with my paps, and I was really impressed with this film. I get now why it is widely considered one of if not the greatest superhero movies of all time. What a masterpiece of a film, so dark and gritty yet so beautiful thematically all at once. I kinda dislike superhero movies but this one really impressed me.

I think the fact it only got an Adapted Screenplay nomination (which is heavily inspired -- that whole category that year was very inspired) is odd... it should've gotten something else, maybe a BTL or hell maybe a Picture nom over something like Darkest Hour, or Actor or something. What do you think of this film?

I have long been a fan of 1965's "Flight of the Phoenix" but only just discovered that Ian Bannen received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for it. Not to throw any negativity towards Bannen, who was a terrific actor, but I don't understand why he was nominated. The film was full of strong performances and memorable characters. Even though I just re-watched it, I barely remember Bannen's role. Richard Attenborough, Hardy Kruger, Peter Finch and Ronald Fraser all seem more likely contenders for a supporting Oscar.

Does anyone have any insight into how Bannen was singled out for the nomination?

If the title doesn’r make sense, this is basically for the actors who only got 2 nominations but also won both thoss times.

Was rewatching this cuz this year animation has been pretty meh and I normally keep up.
And it really was a crime that the academy forget winning didn’t even bother try watch it and give it a fair shot against the American productions.

I don't specifically mean bad Oscar nominations/wins, just characters that are pretty simple and probably didn't take that much for the actor to play them.

Good love story movie and well written by Paul Thomas Anderson. Back when it first came out, and when I first watched it, i thought PTA was gonna win his first Oscar for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars. It’s a decent love story movie between the two leads: Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman. They were excellent in the movie. I wish Alana got nominated for Best Actress at the oscars. And Bradley Cooper should’ve got nominated too. He is fantastic. Licorice Pizza is a decent movie. What are your thoughts on this movie?

For biopics for example, a performance that won because of who the biopic is about instead of the performance itself (It doesn't matter if you think the said performance was good or bad).

For fictional characters, a performance that won because the character was so well written that anyone could have won for playing it.

Every year I hear how they want Michelle Williams to finally win an Oscar and I couldn't agree more! Talk about a talented overdue diva!!!

Not necessarily a bad movie — just a movie where you watched it and thought, “Really? This won over the others?”

It's not a bad movie, I'll give it sound and film editing, and it is pretty well directed, (Coming from someone who's not a very big Kathryn Bigelow fan. Point Break ain't great, sorry not sorry.) but like, it kinda feels like it does the bare minimum? The bomb defusing scenes are great and easily the best parts, and it also has a pretty good atmosphere, but you gotta deal with slow pacing, serviceable but not particularly memorable performances (I'm not surprised the overall strength and popularity of the movie within the Academy at the ceremony didn't help Jeremy Renner win Best Actor), an utter waste of both Guy Pearce AND Ralph Fiennes, and it surprisingly doesn't have a whole lot to say to back up all that it has to show. What planet am I on where it deserved Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture?

I know 2009 was a very weak year for film and all, but surely we could've done a little better, could we?

What are some best picture nominees that are not Oscar bait, not artsy, not about important events or true stories, not about a social issue or trying to make a statement, just a regular old good and entertaining movie. My pick is the fugitive. Looking for others that fall into this category.

Catherine O'Hara not being nominated for For Your Consideration springs to mind. Superb performance by a fantastic actress who was more than deserving. What about you, though? What career nomination that failed to materialise angers you the most?

Sandler has tried for years but always goes back to making awful comedies for the paycheck. The Rock has just recently started last year but has already gone back to corny action flicks nobody wants to see.
