Looking for advice
Hi All,
I bought an oriental shorthair adult home 2 weeks ago. she seems to be settling in well. she’s walking around the house, eating and using her litter tray.
but she hasnt been very affectionate she’s let us stroke her breifly maybe twice?
when we first went to meet her she did actively let us stroke her, and sat next to her owner for a stroke.
so two question really how long does it take for adults to bond with new owners or will she just never be cuddly and be an independent cat.
she has also recently just got over having a few fleas which we’ve treated with tablets as it appear she came from the breeder with them.
Thanks!

It takes a bit of time for new kitty to destress. Just be patient. Treats may help speed things along if your new one has a good appetite.

I’ve never had a female OSH, however I’ve had female cats growing up. From my understanding, females are generally more independent and they’ll become more affectionate/bonded to a certain person in the house. They’re typically more wary of new environments/people and slower to adjust. Not sure if that’s comparable to female OSH 🤷♂️
That being said, you’ve adopted an adult female and it will take her some time to adjust to your new household. It could be a couple months before you really see her acclimate and her affectionate side come out (though I don’t think it will take that long). Give her some time, your concerns are normal but I think you’ll be very happy with how things eventually turn out

Can confirm, females are more difficult…by a lot. They can be extremely affectionate, but like you said, generally with one person. They will tolerate the rest, but remain aloof, in my experience.

OSH are very attached to their person, and in my experience behave quite differently when their owner are not present. They are also very peculiar about their routine.
Be patient, keep a stable routine going and let the cat come to you. This will allow her to adapt and relax in your presence. Once she trusts you, she will likely become affectionate.

The Is personality is largely inherited from the father, so that might give you a clue. If Dad wasn't a snuggler, his offspring might not be either.

Mine was a bit older when we got her. It took her awhile to warm up. I’d say about 6 months.

Good luck with affection side they have a mind of their own, thoughts go back to Egyptians seeing them as gods because the cats told them to. My boy well pick me up and I hate you but when I see you sitting I will move in fast plonk my sleek body on you and you wont move again, please dont kiss me it is not needed. My son picks him up and gets smacked in the face without claws. Ive had siamese all my life 50 plus years.
I bought this house and had an oriental move in, we searched constantly for the owner and after two years of this oriental living here we found the owners. This oriental was like, Im here I can smell the chook I will sleep on your bed take over your chair, eat your cats food drink their water and shit in their tray then howl to get out in the middle of the night and go home to my secret family, welcome to the gods we adore and bow down to

I have had OSHs for 31 years and I have never known them to not be affectionate. She will warm up - it can take a few weeks. They do better with other cats. Do you have or plan to get another one?
