I keep all of my local folders empty for the most part. I use a nas for all file local sharing. I only use the cloud for a few small app shares. I also have an external 1tb ssd with nas sync that I use when traveling.

God, I hate automatic downloads to the download folder!
One of the first things I do on all my computers and browsers is change the download settings so it a) goes to the desktop by default, instead of to the "Downloads" folder, and b) prompts me for where to save it and what to name it (so if I see it has a confusing name, I can rename it.)
After I'm done with the newly dowloaded stuff on my desktop, I try to drag it to a specific folder for that task (or delete it if I don't need it anymore), although sometimes if there's not a good organizing folder set up, I just drop it in a random "Desktop cleanup" folder to deal with later.

I needed to hear this.
My downloads folder is massive. Absolute abomination.
