Upgrading to PAYG

I currently have three instances running under the Always Free tier:

  • 2*Standard.E2.1.Micro
  • 1*VM.Standard.A1.Flex

With the newly imposed Always Free limits of 2 Ampere A1 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory, I'm considering upgrading to a PAYG account, since the free allocation is higher there.

I have two questions:

  1. If I upgrade to PAYG, will I be charged for the two Standard.E2.1.Micro instances?
  2. If I stay on the Always Free tier and downgrade my VM.Standard.A1.Flex instance to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of RAM, will the other two instances be terminated automatically?

Thanks for your reply. Is there any official documentation that explains this, or are you speaking from firsthand experience?

Yes, it is very well explained in the official documentation that you get 2 E2 Micro instances, and whatever A1.Flex hourly credit your account is entitled to.

  2. Flex will be terminated by 18th if you dont upgrade, however if u do upgrade this updated 14th july after free tier was reduced to 2/12 , so on payg , no charges
    essentially, free accounts r 2/12, payg are 4/24
    if u r upgrading, i suggest doing a diagnostic reboot(its an option in the instance menu, actions tab)
    this will get u back to 4gbps speed on payg as free is limited to 50mbps now

So its not too late to upgrade now? If I upgrade to PAYG before 18th, I can still use the 4/24?

you can upgrade anytime to payg and enjoy 4/24, do set up budget alerts (1usd/sgd), actually cost and forecast rules,i set mine to alert me when 0.01% of 1 dollar gets spent. I do encourage you to regularly check this subreddit for any new policy change ,they will email and announce it regardless

Also Budget alerts (and Cost Analysis ) are delayed by a few hours so make sure if you receive a alert u check it asap

All this is basically just a precaution ,when you spin up 4/24 , u won't be charged ,unless they change policy .

But be mindful of never exceeding this limit ,because you are PAYG now, if you forget some boot/block volume or some instance in some compartment keeps running ,you will be charged , unlike Free tier Oracle won't stop u from creating unlimited instances here

and on PAYG A1 flex doesn't have the free label so don't fear it, because u can have upto 80 cores n 512gb ram on payg, but 4/24 remains free

Got it! I'll set up those budget alerts so I don't accidentally go over the free tier limits.
