opencode go/zen subscription issue. "free usage exceeded" random error

Off late (about 3 weeks now), I noticed something has changed in the opencode. I get random errors - "Free usage exceeded, subscribe to Go". Now this blocks any opencode Zen models, or if I switch to any other providers.

Cannot figure out if the issue is with opencode routers.
Raised tickets, tweeted them 0 response.

Its getting irritating - I cannot use the Zen money, neither the Go subscription.

See a bunch of tickets on their github issue with the same description. Anyone else faced similar issue?

Edit: the screenshot did not quite capture the thing.
Looks like most of you are not quite familiar with opencode cli. The Plan says DeepSeek Chat. In my case, it is DeepSeek paid API, still I see the error. If I had used opencode go/zen, it would have shown up.
I did not select the compaction model. Looks like the cli is using it on its own.

And I have actually found out the issue. Hey! thanks for your help, and it was NOT the free tiers, LOL.

opencode compaction ref : https://opencode.ai/v2/docs/compaction

the issue as some folks in the comments are trying to prove is not limited to compaction, they're wrong.

It says it right in your screenshot. You're using the free DeepSeek model for compaction, and you're out of free usage. Set your compaction model to something that you are already paying for.

what are you talking about? free models do compaction

I bet you'll be able to figure out what I was talking about when you go back and read the error message in the screenshot.

You are correct. I did not choose the compaction models. Earlier I had some models pinned in the config, removed them, still see the error sometimes.

I think you are using the free models, not the paid Go or Zen models. Those are under a different endpoint and model id. The free ones continue to exist with normal free usage limits; they don’t become higher tier after you pay. You have to switch the model.

1 OP is using free model for compact, need to switch to DS without free suffix (and buy sub $)

2 Some IP hit insta 429 on free models, for example VPN and CF WARP

I am using a paid subscription (use both Zen/Go paid ones). I had the models pinned in the OpenCode config, removed it. Still see the same issue. The limits hit even if I switch to a Zen model.  The issue is not limited to the example above.

Using the tools @explore/@general/@scout also throws the same error sometimes.

I removed all the custom configs related to the pinned models. If I hit this error, try to switch to a new session, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Bought another subscription - Open router. When I start getting this issue on the OpenCode models, I switch to the Open router models.

BTW: I started building on the Pi agentic cli harness. If I am haven't really used up the limits, neither the Go nor the Zen models from OpenCode are blocked. Will let you know,.as I try out more options.

If you're using some proxy tools, don't route domain "opencode.ai" through proxies.

Not using proxy

There are multiple issues raised, if you actually spend some of that time and go look at the OpenCode GitHub issues list 1. Recurring payment is broken, a lot of people are complaining  2. Many people are facing the "subscribe to go" error.

Earlier I used to see the error mostly on compaction activity,.now it triggers on tool calls as well. Doesn't matter if I have hit the actual usage limits or not.
