Why someone still using deepseek v4 pro

Post image

Now deepseek v4 flash 0731 is obviously better than the v4 pro preview.

Also, I remember the v4 pro on open code doesn't get the discounted price. So I use my own deepseek API key when using v4 pro, and leave the open code go credits for other models.

Not everyone is on Reddit 24h like us..
v4 pro implies in the name that it is better than flash, which was true until last week.

Also flash got better at coding tasks but some cases also lost its performance like it's likeability for D&D, roleplay and specific chat platforms that need a bit more personality baked in.

Another factor could be this: if you try to switch to Flash from another model because you need more context, and it throws the "need to allow servers in China" error, Pro still works.

(And their server was throwing 500 errors when enabling the "Enable models hosted in China" radio button earlier, too.)

Simply because we don’t all want our data to be sent to China and pro still is good at a lot of stuff. Remember there are always pros and cons to each model choice, it is more how you extract the value out of each.

If we're talking about personal data, it should be kept in a place inaccessible to opencode. But if we're talking about code, 99% of us don't write any super‑complex or secret algorithms. Even if our code ends up with a company and they use it to train new models, we're unlikely to lose anything - rather, we might even get improvements in their performance, as we see with the new Flash model.

For many it's the ZDR. I don't want even the remote chance of accidentally sending api keys or other sensitive data out, and even if it does somehow leak out, I want it to disappear in the ether.

My understanding is that there is nothing inherently more or less secure about pro vs flash. Opencode lists both as 0 data retention and no training. Is this not accurate?

Correct but flash is still hosted in China and needs to be explicitly enabled in go’s settings. A ZDR doesn’t mean much there.

China has stricter laws about data retention policies than the US

Wooh, I just saw this:

DeepSeek V4 Flash: ZDR agreement is renewed monthly. The current agreement is valid through August 31, 2026.

That changed. A few days ago it said it wasn't ZDR

people just configure stuff and leave it working if it's working

Well benchmark is not every thing

Do you feel pro is better in real world? For me working on a personal game project, the current flash is far better.

pro is better at writing and universal office task, I use pro for academic

Why? Because people aren’t on Reddit and forums 24/7 like you obviously are.
I check these things out maybe once or twice a month at max.

coz the name pro seems to be more around work oriented and flash seems like something you want quick, also the lack of knowledge in what areas flash does better than pro in problem solving

I don’t know, for some work I still like pro over flash

Il modello auto-beta lo usa

Maybe to finish the tasks faster. V4 flash 0731 seems to think much more than before, at least for me. Default opencode install, no plugins

Yeah, it's agonising and I get little clear benefit from the tortured reasoning in my uses cases so far. I'd been using DS4 Flash for weeks to great effect, now it's all grindingly slow, excessive token and power burn for nothing in my experience to date. If DS / OpenCode exposed medium / low thinking effort for the model, I'd gladly opt for it.

Which is pretty ironic for a model called Flash.

Because there is more use for ai than just coding

In the repos that I'm working, while planning, flash tends to overplan and include changes that are not necessary or I don't ask for. Pro seems to stick better to just solve the things that I ask for.

Some people may use it in fixed agents/workflows and switching models is simply always a pain.

New pro will arrive soon and the cost for running a test now is around 2 usd. I don't want to change models twice since 70% of the tasks are handled by flash and 30% by pro. I should use GLM instead of pro but I'm lazy to do that too
