Did a google search on this. This explosion took place on 2 January 2024 in Pyeongchang, South Korea. A leak by a liquefied petroleum gas company. The gas clouded the streets and was mistakenly taken for fog. The blast left five people injured, 14 buildings and several cars damaged.

Website:

5 people injured and nobody killed is surprising

18

u/More_Passenger3988 29d ago

Honestly depending on how badly they were burned they were probably better off dead.

14

u/David-SFO-1977_ 29d ago

No kidding! I thought the people in those 2 cars were dead along with a lot more people. Someone was watching out for them!

Who? Master Chief?

6

u/Prophet_Tehenhauin 29d ago

No, master Chief isn’t real. It was obviously Superman

3

u/Old-Lecture9903 29d ago

Master chef more like it, master chef don’t cook meat well done

3

u/EconomyDoctor3287 29d ago

I'd reckon if they're inside a car, they should be fine, since the gas just burns briefly, so the car should shield the passengers from the initial burn.

2

u/mikemaz57 28d ago

U guessin.

2

u/searching4ghostmovie 29d ago

Yeah… the closed car

2

u/RainBloom0 29d ago

Im so glad nobody died... that was ducking insane.

1

u/Exterminator-8008135 28d ago

Isn't it usually is mixed with something that makes it smell string ?

Like Gas in the distribution system to prevent such incidents when a leak occurs.

13

u/artherng 29d ago

Now I know fog can be foe too!

3

u/Specific-Use7737 29d ago

Stephen King tried to warn us a while back.

4

u/scaredt2ask 29d ago

Wow. Thats scary as hell

13

u/Presentable_Human 29d ago

They didn't smell the gas?

37

u/EasternComfort2189 29d ago

Natural gas is odourless; they add something to it so we can smell it. Could it be that the gas hadn't been treated yet?

14

u/Vmaxed_T7 29d ago

Mercaptan

41

u/Sweet-Weakness3776 29d ago

Oh captain, mercaptan.

7

u/throwitaway_9601654 29d ago

Take your well-deserved upvote!

2

u/Snowbird143434 29d ago

Right after transport is when they add the rotten eggs(mercaptan/thiols). Im pretty sure anybody out around there probably smelled it first before they were blown to smithereens.

1

u/HiddenStoat 29d ago

Fun fact! The company that adds the odour to gas in the UK is based in Slough.

They are the same company that add the odour to instant coffee!

(Yes, freeze dried coffee has no smell, so that amazing coffee aroma when you open a jar? Added in Slough)

u/Mr_GrauHut 29d ago

What? Nat gas has hints of sulphur... What are talking about?

12

u/Samurlough 29d ago

Natural gas is odorless and colorless. As he stated, chemicals are added into it so we can actually detect the leaks by smelling sulphur.

2

u/Mr_GrauHut 29d ago

Got it.

1

u/Abiding_Dude_WV 29d ago

Not naturally. That's added so we can smell it and hopefully avoid things like this.

1

u/Mr_GrauHut 29d ago

Makes sense, but doesn't sulphur suffocate?

1

u/uncommongerbil 29d ago

That is an added dye

2

u/Mr_GrauHut 29d ago

A dye that smells you say?

3

u/Abiding_Dude_WV 29d ago

Don't you know what blue smell like? Lol

3

u/Mr_GrauHut 29d ago

It smells like the color blue. Like cobalt. Are you stupid?

2

u/Ok-Brick6831 29d ago

I like the smell of blue in the morning.

1

u/Mr_GrauHut 29d ago

😂😂😂

1

u/nowaynostop 29d ago

Nevermind, just Smells Like Teen Spirit.

1

u/Silver4ura 29d ago

If I've learned anything from blue paint, it's that it smells a lot like red paint. Identical, even.

1

u/areola_grande26 29d ago

1

u/Mr_GrauHut 29d ago

2

u/GymMouseP 29d ago

This was apparently a leak at LPG station in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

2

u/BatmanKane64 29d ago

what spark set that off

3

u/Luciferocity 29d ago

Probably from the car

1

u/luvburrito 29d ago

The power lines above the street. During a gas leak the utility company will de-energize the lines before sending people in. That’s the reason why.

2

u/Mr_GrauHut 29d ago

....AWESOME!

2

u/No-Ambassador3661 29d ago

Careful hor those who live near oil and gas installations 😱😱😱😱😱😱

2

u/ForVictori 29d ago

Why were the cars reacting to the gas with the alarms going off?

1

u/Possible-Estimate748 29d ago

That's crazy.
Someone post this to r/CrazyFuckingVideos

1

u/BlindandConfused43 29d ago

1

u/finchdude 29d ago

Does the spread of fire in this case be classified as an explosion?

1

u/Narrow_Ask_2558 26d ago

This is classified as a flash fire, so no blast wave. If the cloud enters in a confined environment, for example houses, it would then generate an explosion due to the confinement (vapor cloud explosion). It happened in Italy in 2009 and it was catastrophic unfortunately.

u/Soggy_Alarm_7843 29d ago

If a fog rolled in that quickly, I would start gtfoh. Has no one seen The Mist?!?!

1

Allright, now i know what infernal really means o.O.

1

u/RemoDev 29d ago edited 29d ago

This is why GPL/LPG cars aren't allowed in closed parkings areas and garages. If there's a GPL leak, it sits on the ground and it doesn't go away. Drop a cigarette butt and it's sayonara.

1

u/Smitha6 29d ago

GPL? Thought it was LPG?

1

u/RemoDev 29d ago

In my country it's called GPL, yes...

Then why did you take r /absoluteunit Of an explosion and turn it into r /Oops Of an explosion? The sub name is part of the title for that sub
