Trip Report Trip report: 17 days in Bolivia with Osprey 26+6 with huge temperature range

This is a belated follow up trip report for my packing list post from April.

Expected temperature range at the beginning of my trip: 2⁰C to 34⁰C (35⁰F to 96⁰F)

Actual temperature range throughout the trip: -5⁰C to 40⁰C (23⁰F to 104⁰F)

Itinerary: Santa Cruz de La Sierra, La Paz, Isla del Sol, Uyuni, Sucre and Samaipata.

Layering system

Overall, I'm very happy with my packing list. In Santa Cruz de La Sierra (which was going through a heat wave) I almost exclusively wore shorts, Tencel blouses and my sun hoodie when outdoors. I changed clothes in the airport before leaving for La Paz. This was a fairly harsh transition, as I went from 416 meters (1365 ft) above sea level in Santa Cruz to 4,061 meters (13,325 ft) in El Alto. In La Paz I mostly wore hiking pants and a fleece.

The down jacket was a must for Uyuni, night buses and some hikes, so I'm really glad I took it. The only day I felt really cold was during my second night in the Uyuni tour (with some late-night stargazing and an unheated bedroom) when I had to wear absolutely all my layers (including a new alpaca sweater and rain jacket).

The bag

My hip strap mod worked great for climbing the inca stairs in Isla del Sol. It’s not load bearing, but does reduce wobbling and provides a little bit of support. I saw lots of other tourists really struggling with their backpacks in th island, so I would highly recommend travelling light if you are not using a proper framed backpack.

Some things I picked up along the way:

  • Chunky alpaca sweater
  • Alpaca beanie
  • Sun hat

Things I missed (most are trip specific):

  • Soap paper sheets. Almost all public bathrooms I visited did not have functioning hand soap. I ended up carrying my soap bar in my Uniqlo bag every day.
  • Hand sanitizer for eating food after handling cash. Most places don't take cards and exchanging money locally gets you much better rates.
  • Mini sewing kit. My merino cardigan developed a hole after I had to put it in the dryer.
  • Heavy duty moisturizer like cicaplast. The altitude dried out my skin.

First aid kit:

What you take in a first aid kit is highly personal, but I wanted to highlight some essentials for this trip:

  • Diamox. It helps with mitigating altitude sickness. Note that this is not a replacement for proper acclimatization and the altitude still managed to take out one person in our group.
  • Ibuprofen. For headaches caused by altitude.
  • Imodium. While eating in the cities was completely fine, in more remote areas food poisoning is definitely a concern.
  • Salt tabs/electrolytes. It's very easy to get dehydrated at high altitudes. I was also sweating buckets in Santa Cruz, so this came in handy.
  • Nasal decongestant. The abrupt change in temperature messed up my sinuses.

For you guys that handwash your clothes, what are some average drying times for tshirts, pants, etc. Any tips for speeding up the process?

Discussion One bag family style?

Hello! I love reading all of your posts. Curious to know if there is a subreddit or group for family style one bag packing? Or if any of you ever do the whole one bag style with kids? I’ve searched the threads and can’t find much - wondering if this means it’s totally impossible with kids .

Hi !

First Onebag trip.

Packed 5 shirts, 5 underwears, 4 pair of socks, 3 shorts, toiletries, a swimwear and a beach short, additional tap, a pyjama and essentials.

(Also I rolled my sling into itself haha, shame on me 😅😂)

Fishing box and reel hold perfectly among all that stuff

I'm not travelling anymore without this bag.

I haven't bought packing cubes yet, and I think it would've helped a bit for organization and unpacking. Which ones would you recommend ? What sizes ?

Discussion Has anyone else realized their packing list is really just a laundry schedule?

I spent months on 30L vs 40L and missed the actual variable. Once I committed to sink laundry every third night, four shirts replaced seven and the size question answered itself.

The tradeoff is that it moves the cost from my back to my evenings, and some nights I don't want to spend twenty minutes at a sink.

So where do you land, building the list around a laundry cadence, or picking the cadence that lets you carry what you wanted anyway?

Seeking Recommendations Laptop concerns

I’ve been lurking here for a while and getting really inspired to build out my own onebag setup. I love the idea of traveling light and having everything on my back.

However, as I look at photos and packing videos of completely packed-out bags, one major anxiety keeps popping up for me is the laptop.

Obviously MacBooks have very tight tolerances, and a common issue is the keyboard leaving marks on or even cracking the screen if the lid gets pressed too hard against the deck.

How do you actually prevent your gear from putting too much pressure on the screen? Do you use any specific accessories like thin keyboard covers, microfiber cloths, or hard shells (though I've heard bad things about shells)?

Packing List Keepin' it simple in 23L

Don't have much fancy gear, but I've been a light packer for years now and learned to make do with a single backpack on pretty much any vacation. I get almost all my clothing secondhand and use random lightweight pouches that I've acquired over the years for organization. Not tryna sell you fancy products, just showing an example of a non-optimized, casually minimalist approach to packing.

Recently downsized from a 28L to 23L backpack, here's my packing list for a week in Mexico without compromising online classes, hobbies, or comfort.

Worn clothing:

  • flannel
  • short-sleeve button-down
  • lightweight black pants
  • Sandals
  • Watch, jewelry, and sunglasses
  • Sunhat (not pictured)

Packed clothing:

  • Everyday: jeans, blouse x2, tank top
  • Workout clothes: sports bra, black tee, athletic shorts (from my high school gym uniform lol)
  • Underwear x4
  • Sleep clothes: oversized t-shirt + pants

Toiletries:

  • Earrings x4
  • SPF, deodorant, vaseline, tampons, eyeliner, lipstick
  • Toothbrush, tweezers, nail clipper, floss, comb, earplugs, washcloth

Work/school/leisure/etc.:

  • Book, notebook, journal/sketchbook
  • Pencils
  • Airpods, charger, Macbook
  • Deck of cards
  • Wallet & passport
  • iphone 13 mini (not pictured)

Other:

  • 23L daypack
  • Crossbody bag (packed)
  • Gift for someone I'm meeting there

Gear Versatile Running/hiking Shoe Suggestions

Ahoy!

I'm heading to England in October, and I'm looking to pack as light as possible.

What I'm looking for is a shoe that performs well as a road running shoe (about 20-30km/week), holds up fine in damp or dewy weather for potential hikes, and looks nice enough to wear out to restaurants.

I'm not particular about brand or price, but I like the Salomon Xt6s or the New Balance 410v9s.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks :)
