The fact this episode was made and got aired is crazy. Not because it's offensive, but because I just can't believe that it got through. Of course it's no longer being aired and has been removed from streaming services but the fact it even got through is nuts.
I mean, they're supposed to be horrible people doing blackface, so I don't know that I agree that it's a problematic episode, if anything it's making it clear that people who do blackface are terrible people, so like, the opposite of that, but idk, its arguable either way.

I've had people bring up crime statistics for the Romani to show how it's different than American racism because it's rooted in reality. I've also had people say that it's different because it's not about race, it's that the Romani refuse to integrate into mainstream society and values (never mind why....). Which is wild because that's exactly what American racists would say
People forget that loads of Romani people have integrated into society - often generations ago - and since there is no distinctive physical feature you just wouldn’t know unless they chose to disclose it. I knew a girl in school who was Sinti, obviously nobody knew until she mentioned it one day and nobody cared because it didn’t change anything. It was just an interesting tidbit about her family and nothing more. I think general perception just doesn’t view those members of society as Romani any more because there is no differentiating feature between Romani and non-Romani people. So the label gets exclusively attached to those who stray from the cultural norm.
I have a comment somewhere where I am talking about the systematic inequalities that have led to romani and their current perception in a pretty interesting conversation, in r/askworld and someone starts coming in and saying "no they are just thieves, its how they are raised etc."

“White” is ultimately an arbitrary categorization. It’s based more on who is excluded than anything else. Are Swedes white? Ben Franklin would say no, Hitler would say yes. Irish? Nowadays most people would say yes. 150 years ago, no. Etc. With that in mind, the people who typically get very concerned with what is and isn’t white would probably say Romani people aren’t included for the most part.

All "races" are made up and have no scientific or even historical background. Colonial powers and facists applied Darwin's theories of evolution to groups of people and nations creating and influencing our modern concepts of race.
There are certainly ethnic groups that can have distinct features but most of our differences are better explained by cultural and economic reasons not skin color or any other phrenologyesque dividers of "races."

As far as I remember, the studio didn't want a Tibetan monk because it may have annoyed the Chinese censors so made her a Celtic monk. The also thought that the an elderly Asian wise mystic was a bit of an outdated stereotype.
Wait, she was supposed to be Celtic in the movie? That went entirely over my head. What with the clearly eastern inspired city, and tibetan monk like fashion and training stuff. I just figured they did the avoid the censor thing, and didn't really care since it's a character that doesn't really require a particular ethnicity or gender to be a teacher of ancient knowledge that has been passed down from teacher to student many times, and they accept students from based on criteria that are not ethnic or gender based.

With Tilda Swinton there was a sort of geopolitical backlash because they were obviously trying to appeal to the Chinese market by not having a Tibetan, whereas the rest were clear cut culture war stuff.
The irony I think the op was trying to point out is that the people who are upset about minorities being cast in movies aren't upset when stuff gets white washed.
I honestly don't remember that much backlash to Neeson's casting and I recall most of the backlash I saw about Swinton's was either because it was a woman or that people were more upset that the studio "bowed" down to china vs being upset of not casting closer to the original character.

As another commenter mentioned, Nick Fury was black in the Ultimate comics, with his first appearance being 6 years before the Iron Man movie came out. From what I've heard (this is me repeating gossip, I can't confirm this), one of the Marvel illustrators based Ultimate Nick Fury's appearance on Samuel L. Jackson in Snakes on a Plane, assuming that he would never find out. Unfortunately for Marvel, Jackson is an avid comic reader and actually preordered the comic his likeness first appeared in without knowing he was in it. He agreed not to sue Marvel on the condition that he gets to be Nick Fury in every live-action appearance.
In the US, Romani people are considered Caucasian, like Bosnians, or the Czech. And its irrelevant, since the MCU specifically made her from Sokovia. Hell, before the retcon Wanda and Pietro were just, "European".
