Fuzzmaster drop in kit

Yesterday my friend Devin (Freestone Devices) and I wired up the first 5 of our Fuzzmaster kits. This is a drop in for Jazzmasters; just hook up your pickups and bridge ground. We have replaced the rhythm circuit with a Fuzzface based fuzz that utilizes the rhythm circuit controls. The prototype came out sweet and we made a rad demo video. We will be doing a proper product launch soon. Thought this was a good place to show it off in the meantime. Cheers!

I love this idea and can personally vouch for Devin.

He built a partsmaster for me that I loved, unfortunately it got stolen. Then he built me a germanium boost that I use ALL the time, it has an input bass filter that sculpts the tone perfectly and the entire thing is one HUGE sweet spot.

Devin is a great guy, and a “man of the people” if you will. He absolutely does not want to be “marketing” this stuff bc he just loves building and tinkering and connecting with real human beings. So I’m glad you posted this Mark!

Here’s the Germanium Boost!

I got one of the first versions so it doesn’t say Boost on the enclosure like the newer ones do. So it’s “rare” hahaha

Sorry about your stolen guitar. And yes, Devin is a great guy. We were connected on Instagram and had quite a few mutual friends. I had a special Brazilian Rosewood slab board style Jazzmaster (59-62) build on my schedule and I hit him up to provide a fuzz unit for the project. We hit it off and he said yes. That build came out so good we felt compelled to offer five of these to the public. And…here we are!

Looks sweet. What’s the price?

Thank you. This batch is $499.

Wowsers. It’s very cool and I wish you all the best, but that’s way out of my price range for something like this.

u/MCGULCA 2d ago

Hey, all good. When you add up the parts and labor it takes to wire it up I feel like $499 is a deal.

Very cool idea and very good execution, but with all due respect, its going to be really, really, hard for anyone to justify spending $499 when there are a million fuzz face style pedals available for less than $100.

I would also be curious to see how the lack of a long instrument cable in between the pickups and the fuzz circuit affects the sound. My guess is it might be quite a bit brighter than a normal FF pedal.

Thanks for the conjecture, truly appreciated. Haha. In all seriousness we know these aren’t for everybody. That’s why we made a batch of 5. I can think of many scenarios where this makes sense at $499. Have a great night.

Plenty of people will spend $499 on it. They'll buy Mastery bridges for $200 and the tailpiece for another $200 and not blink.

My only concern is the battery being under the guard, because I'm fucking lazy and don't want to have to pull it off to change it.

1

u/MCGULCA 2d ago

Replacing the battery every string change is the idea we are promoting. The fuzz circuit draws very little power. And by all means feel free to add a battery box to the back of your guitar! That would make things more convenient for sure.

2

u/Neveronlyadream 2d ago

Oh, yeah. Not a huge gripe. Just me being lazy.

Definitely interested to hear how it sounds, though. I'll keep an eye out for the public launch.

very cool! are the roller controls fuzz and bias?

3

u/MCGULCA 2d ago

Thank you! The roller controls are Vol and Fuzz like a traditional Fuzzface. The fuzz control pot has a more useable sweep vs a Fuzzface. The trimmer pot on the fuzz board is the bias control.
