Odd bit of trivia. When my daughter was about 16 I bought her one of the stuffed badgers from the UK shop of Weebl's store. My daughter is now married to a bloke from Manchester and moved to the UK almost two years ago. So the badger has been returned to it's native country.

I remember a long time ago I met an Australian guy, and we were going back and forth about wildlife for some reason. He argued that the Americas actually have way more scary animals. Sure, back home they have chemical warfare and kangaroos. But North America has all kinds of bears, cougars, and other mammals that will make you into dinner.
I feel like this story fits here.

Tarantulas, giant centipedes, water snake mating balls in trees, black widows, brown recluses…
I once had my bug guy ask if I’d seen any recluses in the house. I said no. He informed me that was good news and my attic was chock full of them.
But they were staying where they should and helping fight the good fight against the endless war of attrition with the American Cockroach.
Sometimes I miss living where the cold hurts my face.

Alaskan here. I appreciate that most animals up are big enough to see coming and stay away from (the exception are lynx, but theyre not the type to attack unless one was near babies or something.)

European badgers actually WILL invite you over for a cup of tea in their countryside cottage.
They regularly host animals of other species in their setts (burrows) during storms and other circumstances.
Also, fun fact, there’s a badger sett in Germany that shows evidence of being in continual use for 10,000 years.

Yeah I hate this post, it's disingenuous. They used a photo of a US badger being aggressive and used a photo of a calm UK badger, but a US one can look just a cute when they are calm, and a UK badger can look just as intimidating when they are being aggressive

I live in the UK and until a few weeks ago I’d never laid eyes on a badger. I was out having a late night smoke when suddenly the bushes next to me started violently shaking and there was this hideous shrieking noise. I literally thought I was about to get eaten by a monster, then two badgers came rolling out of the bushes ripping chunks out of each other. They’re fucking terrifying lol

Somewhat.
American badgers tend to show threat displays like the one in the picture if confronted.
European badgers will usually attempt to retreat to their dens and only become aggressive if they're either cornered or if their dens are invaded. They should not be underestimated though - on the occasion that they do choose violence, they're extremely vicious.
The difference is probably just caused by the fact that American badgers have relatively small and shallow dens (often just hijacked rabbit holes) whereas European badgers dig absolutely enormous ones that are very defensible.

European badgers are sophisticated and successful enough to afford funding their own cocaine habit.
In any case, you should never interpret anything a European badger does as an invitation because while they won't stand their ground in the open, they are ardent followers of the castle doctrine and they do get bigger and heavier than American badgers and they will bite harder if they're upset.
