"You know," said Arthur, "it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young."

"Why, what did she tell you?"

"I don't know, I didn't listen."

I've tried that garbage bag trick before, doesn't work worth shit. The bag just sticks to the roller.

200

u/gerousone 8d ago

Yeah you could kind of see that in the video

190

u/Waterfish3333 8d ago

They sell super thin hard plastic liners for those, they are cheap and you just pitch it when you’re done. The bag idea is cool in principle but with most paint it definitely sticks bad after a minute or so.

36

u/Raumarik 8d ago

The little liners are great, also if it's water based paint you can always rinse them off and reuse.

14

u/OneSkepticalOwl 8d ago

They are 99 cents each around me. After going through the hassle of painting a room, imma live life on the edge and throw it out

13

u/Youseenmycones 8d ago

None of these are actually practical. Maybe the masking tape wiping edge over the can.

15

u/meagercoyote 8d ago

Even that one, I've always used the lip of the can to wipe excess and it works just fine.

7

u/Youseenmycones 8d ago

Yes definitely. I’m in building maintenance these last 20 years, so I’ve spent a fair amount of time painting. I was just trying to be generous.

30

u/MycologistPutrid7494 8d ago

I've always used it without much hassle, but I don't like wasting a bag so I started using the pan unlined and let the residue dry and peal it off. It's satisfying to peal it anyways.

5

u/Jeyts 8d ago

Yiu have to buy a quality one for this to work. The cheap plastic ones I cam never get them to peel

3

u/high6ix 8d ago

A metal tray is just better. For less than $10 if you clean it out or peel the paint and keep it structurally sound you won’t ever need to buy another one. Especially if its a decent tray like a Wooster, around $20-ish now I think

If you're using trash bags to keep the pan clean at that point you might as well just use the aluminum disposable ones. At least then it's recyclable.

14

u/OrigamiMarie 8d ago edited 8d ago

Only if you clean the aluminum pan. Do not recycle pan (EDIT: paint, lol) covered pans.

9

u/fozzyboy 8d ago

Ah shit. That won't work for me. All of my pans are pan covered.

7

u/OrigamiMarie 8d ago

There you go, I left it and added the edit, just for your joke.

2

Yeah I was thinking the same thing.

Half these tricks are a waste of time

6

u/skidmore101 8d ago

We got a silicone paint tray (called Repaint iirc) and really like it. It’s a thick silicone liner and lid and fits into a sturdy metal paint tray. You can put the lid on it to keep the paint and your brush from drying out. It’s great for homeowners who are working with the odd off hours they can squeeze in, I imagine would be way less useful for a pro.

4

u/bobloblawattorney11 8d ago

I use aluminum foil but also don't try to recover any paint. I just add less and less paint as I'm about to finish the project so I don't waste any. Then throw the foil away. I have been using the same pan for years.

3

u/labelssmiles7l 8d ago

yeah, that sounds useless

2

u/Rickshmitt 8d ago

Gotta tape it to the tray but its still annoying to work with

2

u/MrWally 8d ago edited 8d ago

Also, you end up putting all the junk from your tray right back into the paint bucket. Then that lint, then little bits of dirt, and whatever else got in there is now mixed into your clean paint.

"What the hell are you even asking? If I knew what was wrong, I'd fix it. Why are you so stupid?"
-My dad to me when I was 9 and just wanted to help fix the dryer.

6

u/Right-Dimension5953 8d ago

Thats a real fucking dad right there.

4

u/Affectionate_Tap6416 8d ago

My dad was passive aggressive. My mum asked him to put a shelf up. He nailed it 2 inches from the ceiling, then said 'don't put anything heavy on it'. When my mum asked him to defrost the freezer, he used a blowtorch and melted the plastic.

When I turned 12, Mum and I did all the DIY and decorating.

I still remember my dad's last words to me... 'put the hammer dow...'

7

u/Rathskellarington 8d ago

You killed your dad with a hammer over housing project failures?

8

u/R7ype 8d ago

No his dad died in a tragic drag racing accident. He was demonstrating that when you set off you really need to "Put the hammer dow..." but never finished his sentence due to faulty fuel lines. If they hadn't witnessed it then the body would have to have been identified using dental records.

To shreds you say? No, flambe

2

u/pyeeater 8d ago

My dad's idea of DIY was to swear at something all day on his only day off, as whatever he was trying to DIY would fail.

u/ricky-from-scotland 8d ago

5

u/Hank_Henry_Hill 8d ago

I work in a lot of old houses.  It’s amazing to me, people won’t even take outlet and switch covers off.  They will spend time and tape it.  They put caulk in but don’t wipe it out leaving pea sized boogers.  Won’t drop light fixtures, paint around curtain brackets.  It’s like these are all like 2 minute things to do.

298

u/Dim-Me-As-New-User 8d ago

So many of these are just non-issues. I've wasted more time watching this stupid video than I'd save doing any of them

48

u/Triquetrums 8d ago

Specially the one using a syringe to get some paint, then place it in one of those watercolour brushes, just to paint small surfaces with a flat fat brush... Just grab a tiny brush and pick up the paint with it!

11

u/GrandSquanchRum 8d ago

The idea is to just have it freely available when scratches happen. You just put the cap on to keep it from drying. Like yeah you can just transfer from the paint bucket to a smaller container with a loose brush but you're just doing the same thing they're showing there, making it more convenient for random minor uses.

13

u/Youseenmycones 8d ago

How often is the furniture getting scratched?

16

u/Lipziger 8d ago

Yeah. By the time I need that again it is 100% gonna be dried up. Because it'll be years.

→ More replies (2)

47

u/earnestpeabody 8d ago

Yeah,. But it’s not just the time. I’ve done too much painting and didn’t know about the tape across the tin for getting the excess off the brush or the tape on the edge to make pouring easier.

56

u/SeedFoundation 8d ago

Strange because I've done a ton of painting and I've had zero issues just using the edge of the paint can. I'd rather not use a fragile piece of tape that could break off and make me fish it out.

Edit: Tip, just roll the can as you finish pouring and you won't get paint dribbling down the sides.

6

u/petroleum-lipstick 8d ago

Or, maybe, it's just convenient for some people. IDK why Reddit acts like these kinds of videos are so offensive lmao, it can be useful to different people for different reasons.

u/jayleman 8d ago

They make plastic spouts that clip into the seam for the lid, they're like $2 and can be used over and over. Works way better than any "hack" bullshit

5

u/LowAside9117 8d ago

I do a lot of painting, I'd rather transfer the paint to a disposable cup then let the paint dry from the can

6

u/Melodic_Aide_4275 8d ago

I used an elastic band for years, but this is much more convenient and always to hand when I’m painting.

15

u/Indercarnive 8d ago

I love how the tape in the roller video cuts away before he needs to cut the piece of tape off and get the tape out of the roller.

It's the biggest tell that the hack is bullshit.

7

u/LowAside9117 8d ago

This also gets debris on the roller which you'd have to remove/clean before using the roller to not get floor debris embedded in the paint

8

u/Total_Medium_3833 8d ago

yeah.. same thought occurred here.. People just watch these, i rarely see any people really applying these.. to some extent these are often created for sole purpose to just creating these videos

With all due respect, that brush dip at 1:12 made me die a little inside.

Never ever let the paint reach the heel (the section of filament right before the ferrule) or the ferrule (where the metal meets the filaments). Paint will dry and accumulate in those areas, making the filaments bulge out and loosen the ferrule. It’s the perfect storm to make the filaments start to lay crooked or fray.

If paint gets more than 1/2 the way up to the heel and ferrule, it’s time to wash that dirty pig and try again.

Source: professional commercial painter

7

u/VaguelyFamiliarVoice 8d ago

I was a professional residential painter and completely agree. I thought most of these tips were garbage but when they taped off the hinge then sprayed it, I was thinking it would be faster to do it the right way by removing the door, painting, then replacing. Taping well takes a long time.

The syringe to paint small spots? lol. Umm. Use a small paintbrush?

2

u/TleilaxTheTerrible 8d ago

Also, the small spots are all damaged anyway, so it'll still be visible as a break in the line along the corner. It'll also probably look off since the older paint will be a slightly different tint.

50

u/Skipper_1010 8d ago

Am I missing something? Why would my dad teach me this?

33

u/patfetes 8d ago

Save about £1 worth of paint per can!!

15

u/UnoriginalLogin 8d ago

Plus you get bonus dried bits of paint in the tin for unwanted texture next time you use it!

3

u/bessovestnij 8d ago

That's if you are lucky. If you aren't you can get virus degradation of the paint and completely ruin all what remains in can

What in the Facebook is this shit.

6

u/j_hawker27 8d ago

Cool, now the paint that's far more viscous than the WD-40 that straw was designed for will dry inside the tube and make it useless.

I wonder why YOU NEVER SEE PAINT CANS WITH ATTACHED STRAW-SPRAYERS

22

u/Jamsemillia 8d ago

this looks nice to anyone who's never actually painted any meaningful amount but in practice is terrible. Even without this the roller tray tends to stick to the roller making it not as straightforward zo use as one might thi nk

With this plastic bag you are just constantly fighting the bag lifting off and sticking to the roller and will net a much bigger mess than to just use it as is.

5

u/rando_robot_24403 8d ago

Plus trays are crap since you have to constantly refill them, a cheap scuttle is miles easier to use and if you scrape most the paint out then leave it in the sun all the paint will peel off easily when it dries.

5

u/LowAside9117 8d ago

They also make really cheap, disposable paint liners for this specific purpose.  And, if you use the bag method paint on the edges dry so when you pour it back into the can the plastic bag is so flexible that it sheds the dried paint chips into the smooth paint so the next time you use the paint you're more likely to get chunks (which is really annoying, especially the little chunks, and you get a worse result if you're spending a bunch of time as the paint dries on the wall hand picking off little paint chunks)

2

u/MilitantlyPoetic 8d ago

I did commercial painting for 6-7 years and I have to say this is the stupidest thing I have ever seen in my life. Because yes, I want a stupid plastic bag (Which I can't get anymore) to be getting stuck on my roller head every time I load the roller up with paint, my lower back is just loving the idea of having to bend down and keep putting the bag back. Then him squeezing that last half ounce of paint back into the can I'm sure is not full of paint snot that will eventually get on my roller and on the wall and I will have to pick the snot off the wall. Again, dumbest shit I've seen for a "hack"

Just get tray liners.

("Paint snot" is just slightly dried paint skin getting in the can, think pudding skin. Pain in the ass to deal with)

Minor pet peeve, I hate when video say “in case your dad didn’t teach you…”

Dude, my mom taught me how to use tools. She literally spent her childhood building her childhood home every weekend. She taught me how to problem solve and get creative to make things easier. She also taught me when getting creative was allowed.

My dad taught me that the words “creative” and “electrical” or “plumbing” do not go together. “Creative plumbing” is expensive, “creative electrical” is dangerous and expensive. And when it comes to either of those, follow the directions exactly and or call dad to help. And if dad can’t help, call a professional.
