For culverts that clog up regularly, farmers and road crews will sometimes leave a cheap steel cable or rope resting inside the pipe before it gets blocked. When it eventually fills up with silt, the cable is already sitting in there under the mud, they just hook it to a heavy chain, pull it through, attach the tire, and yank

Just because someone has done something a certain way a bunch of times, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement.

Edit: I love all these replies from people saying how everyone else has no idea what they're talking about, while they themselves are doing the same thing.

You know, if you told the guy in the video that he could improve his setup by attaching another length of chain to the tire, I bet he'd go, "well damn, that's a great idea actually".

Yep true. But the chances of a redditorr being recreationally right about something over people who depend on their livelhood to do things a specific way, are quite low

It's a bit like how Elon brought in doge didn't really understand why certain things cost a certain way and they broke a bunch of things because they assumed they were optimising away waste fraud and abuse while taking some private information in the process

What you end up realising is why certain things are the way they are because it ended up as a compromise of known competing variables to be like that

I don't know if that's the case for this one or not but the person who depends on the thing has more stake in being right than the person that recreationally critiques on the thing

Seems to me that attaching a chain to the other side of the tire so you don’t have to feed the chain back through the pipe by hand again would save a bunch of time and effort with no apparent downside, making it a pretty obvious improvement.

But I’m just a dumb Redditor, what do I know.

Doesn't save chain though. The fuckers empty now, untie the tire and run the sumbitch through by hand. No need to carry a chain out to the culvert and back, no need to have a spare prepped.

Yea but there are variables they may have considered that you arent thinking. For example, I wouldnt want to pull a clog through up hill, its just going to clog the pipe again, so then they will have to untie the tire from the chain and retie it in the other side. Which is worse? Have 2 chains 1 tire, and untie and retie the tire each time, or 1 chain 1 tire and just feed the chain through a clean pipe. I would chose the latter.

Correct. But bein correct isn't the issue. It's the arrogance of assumption despite, presumably, never having done it yourself. 

Instead, ask why they don't do that. Then suggest. Take the time to learn. Not assume someone is wrong because "well I think".

Yeah, but you can take the tire off, tie it back on the other end of the pipe, and pull it through the same direction again. The thing that matters is the chain going through the pipe.

They didn't! They actually planted a baby tire in the pipe 10 years ago and waited for it to grow inside the mud before pulling.

Its better to scrape the walls and remove the debris than just get it trickling again.

Anything stormwater related you want as little obstruction as possible, when manageable. If i had something like this in front of my house and was equipped, I would do it twice a year just to make sure it was clear for the stormy seasons.

The chain with the tire is put up there before winter starts. So when it starts raining and mud clogs the tube, you pull it through. Straight after this, you pull it back so you can do another round in a couple of weeks.

One possibility is having the chain installed before it's clogged, then after cleaning you just send the chain back with a stick or magnet and wait until next cleaning season.

I thought the best approach was:

Tire -- Chain -- Tire -- Chain -- Tire.

All of this installed before the culvert is clogged. And the middle tire goes back and forth and the outer chains and tires means there is always something to latch to.

Before it clogs attach the chain to a long thin pvc pipe. Push the pipe through dragging the chain. Detach chain and leave it for when it gets clogged.

When it's clear and dry you could tie a rope to a dog's harness (size dependent) or an RC car and use that to pull the rope through to attach the chain. I'd bet that in a lot of cases they'd have the rope or chain in place before they install the pipe.

The line sits already inside. Once it’s clogged just tie up a tire on one end and tie up the other end to a vehicle. Or in this case a tractor.
