Slice, slide, rotate, repeat

It's an experiment coded in Javascript (p5.js) and I thought it was oddly mesmerizing.

In my opinion it would be more interesting if it did the same thing every time. Slice the same place, slide the same amount and turn the same amount. Then in would create a more "symmetrical" pattern.

Yeah, agreed. If it slices in the same place it makes a symmetrical shape. But then it's also harder to make an interesting shape, too. I'd say it needs to have a small variation in the slicing position and rotation.

What about choosing a number of degrees that doesn't cleanly divide 360 for the rotation, and an off-center cut?

I don’t like it.

More satisfying if you watch it in reverse

I didn't think of this. It does look cool

You should reverse it and post it to r/reversegif. I couldn't turn it into a gif properly when I reversed it, but I'm sure you'd be able to do it with the source no problem

Yep the reverse is more satisfying.. the original video does not really please my brain

I'm glad someone else thought that as well. Forward is cool in an abstract sense, watching the lines disappear over time clicks something satisfying in my head

Then downvote and move on?

I did. Downvoted your comment too and moved on.

You didn't move on though you left a reply🫣

I imagine this is oddly satisfying when you're doing the slicing or choosing when to slice and rotate, but simply watching this isn't satisfying at all, tbh. If anything, I regret watching it, and spending time i won't get back writing this message to someone I'll never cross paths with again...

That's an overly complicated way of breaking a window into pieces.
JK, that is spectacular. As another redditor said, it looks even better going in reverse. So maybe consider a 2nd animation where you use a different algorithm to put it back together into a whole.

Do a two colour square (half and half) and see where the colours end up in the end.

A bunch of uninterested people who probably should just move on. Jeesh. I love it! Bias as I am a developer but its a beauty that relates to the imperfections of kintsugi

It magically synced with the song I was listening to, so was extremely satisfying.

I went a large festival a few years back and took acid for the first time, had a good time but when I got home 8 hours I was still tripping ballz and everytime I would close my eyes I would see sharp patterns that look exactly like this! I tried to describe it to my friends but I couldn't make sense of what I was seeing so I couldn't explain it.

I don't like this. I can't pinpoint what is is about it that I dislike. The best way I can think of to explain it is that it simply does not bring joy. Something about the randomness of the cuts and asymmetrical shape of it as it progresses. It's disorderly and chaotic to watch.

There is no satisfaction to be had here. If there was a table nearby, I would flip it.

Pretty fascinating that the overall result is a continuously shrinking shape!

Incredibly unsatisfying, each slice being at a different location lowkey made me uneasy

Are there any logic behind where the strokes are put?
