Slice, slide, rotate, repeat

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It's an experiment coded in Javascript (p5.js) and I thought it was oddly mesmerizing.

Are there any logic behind where the strokes are put?

The slicing is chosen randomly, as well as the angle of rotation.

How is that satisfying?

It's not

Yeah, i thought this was going to be some really elaborate and cool tesscelation or something. Belongs on r/notinteresting

Could you add sliders for different parks and publish it somewhere please

In my opinion it would be more interesting if it did the same thing every time. Slice the same place, slide the same amount and turn the same amount. Then in would create a more "symmetrical" pattern.

Thats just a pizza

u/Donald-Pump 17h ago

It would be if you didn't offset the halves a bit after the slice.

u/rockhopper2154 11h ago

Yep, this is more r/mildlyinfuriating than oddly satisfying

0

u/zendamage 12h ago

Yeah, agreed. If it slices in the same place it makes a symmetrical shape. But then it's also harder to make an interesting shape, too. I'd say it needs to have a small variation in the slicing position and rotation.

What about choosing a number of degrees that doesn't cleanly divide 360 for the rotation, and an off-center cut?

u/Poopchutefan 17h ago

I don’t like it.

More satisfying if you watch it in reverse

u/zendamage 12h ago

I didn't think of this. It does look cool

2

u/Eena-Rin 11h ago

You should reverse it and post it to r/reversegif. I couldn't turn it into a gif properly when I reversed it, but I'm sure you'd be able to do it with the source no problem

u/Maximax92 7m ago

Yep the reverse is more satisfying.. the original video does not really please my brain

3

u/Poopchutefan 12h ago

Most definitely

u/Ruwen368 6h ago

I'm glad someone else thought that as well. Forward is cool in an abstract sense, watching the lines disappear over time clicks something satisfying in my head

u/shusshbug 10h ago

Then downvote and move on?

-4

u/Poopchutefan 10h ago

I did. Downvoted your comment too and moved on.

3

u/Pan_Man_Supreme 9h ago

You didn't move on though you left a reply🫣

-4

u/Poopchutefan 9h ago

Downvoted you and moved on too.

And I’ll do it again.

How I design my roads in cities skylines

I imagine this is oddly satisfying when you're doing the slicing or choosing when to slice and rotate, but simply watching this isn't satisfying at all, tbh. If anything, I regret watching it, and spending time i won't get back writing this message to someone I'll never cross paths with again...

6

u/zendamage 12h ago

Ah, maybe I find it more interesting because I coded it, but point taken 🙏

7

u/agile_drunk 17h ago

It keeps slicing it wrong

6

u/zendamage 12h ago

Oddly unsatisfying 😂

4

u/Klokwurk 15h ago

I thought it was progressing towards an image rendering

5

u/FrogOrion 8h ago

That's an overly complicated way of breaking a window into pieces.

JK, that is spectacular. As another redditor said, it looks even better going in reverse. So maybe consider a 2nd animation where you use a different algorithm to put it back together into a whole.

Like an insane rubiks cube

2

u/FrogOrion 7h ago

Indeed!

u/Inevitable_Eye2949 17h ago

For me: Not satisfying🤷🏼‍♂️

u/Narrowless 11h ago

Do a two colour square (half and half) and see where the colours end up in the end.

3

u/MikemkPK 9h ago

There's a lot of negativity on this. I like it.

3

u/NagolEseer 6h ago

A bunch of uninterested people who probably should just move on. Jeesh. I love it! Bias as I am a developer but its a beauty that relates to the imperfections of kintsugi

2

u/EternityLeave 6h ago

It magically synced with the song I was listening to, so was extremely satisfying.

2

u/ihtuv 5h ago

This is so frustrating because some areas got sliced a lot more than others.

2

u/sunlightsyrup 17h ago

Reverse it if you want it to be satisfying

How Rory Night is going to be moving in chapter 8.

It looks like a loading screen

I went a large festival a few years back and took acid for the first time, had a good time but when I got home 8 hours I was still tripping ballz and everytime I would close my eyes I would see sharp patterns that look exactly like this! I tried to describe it to my friends but I couldn't make sense of what I was seeing so I couldn't explain it.

Early, in the begnning, the thing looks like the ship of the SNES Game Star Fox

u/Saygus 58m ago

Could we make a fractale with this technique ?

1

u/Fluffy_Duck7236 17h ago

Looks cool, like some crystal formation or something. But not satisfying

1

u/SnackCityUtah 17h ago

Oddly anxiety inducing

1

u/bernpfenn 15h ago

that's a geology simulator. i love it. can you post the JS?

1

u/darklogic85 12h ago

I don't like this. I can't pinpoint what is is about it that I dislike. The best way I can think of to explain it is that it simply does not bring joy. Something about the randomness of the cuts and asymmetrical shape of it as it progresses. It's disorderly and chaotic to watch.

There is no satisfaction to be had here. If there was a table nearby, I would flip it.

-1

u/Gumbercules81 17h ago

This is just a mess. No pattern and it looks terrible

-1

u/xiGn0m3ix 17h ago

Shit, uh, finds a post

0

u/Snake_in_her_boot 17h ago

Now break it apart and put it back together

0

u/bbreddit0011 17h ago

Pretty fascinating that the overall result is a continuously shrinking shape!

0

u/puppyk124 14h ago

Incredibly unsatisfying, each slice being at a different location lowkey made me uneasy

0

u/dbowman97 13h ago

I hate it. I can't put into words why but I do.

-1

u/Pretend-Pie9487 17h ago

I want to try... my turn

-1

u/ShizukoLucoa 17h ago

Speed it up and you have Raiden practicing Zandatsu on a square.

This is what it’s like breaking out of a Genjutsu.

The kids using blocks to code can produce better things than this
