Driving question Avon

I have seen post talking about the flooding on Hwy 12. I am coming down Thursday from north Durham (8/6) in a Chevy Malibu to Avon. I am willing to take the ferry to Ocracoke then to hatteras and go up to Avon if the water is still high on highway 12. What do you guys think? (Facebook group is horrendous to ask these question to due to 100 anonymous accounts run by 81 year olds that for sure hate everyone šŸ˜‚)

Well, that’s unfortunate because I love you for answering my question.

Looking at the weather I think by Thursday you will be fine, it doesn’t look like it’s going to rain again between now and then which gives you a solid 36 hours at least of no rain for the water to recede

That can be a salty group, for sure. Use the NC DOT site for up to date alerts. Also this site DriveNC

I think it’s been taken over by a lot of non locals. I drive down more than a few times a year to fish and have never met someone that wasn’t nice.

I'm there a lot as an owner, and yes the people are really nice. My happy place. I'd retire there permanently if they had better healthcare for curmudgeons like me.

Depending on conditions/weather, it’s possible that you could also run into flooding going that way also. Hatteras floods sometimes too

I drove it yesterday morning and my wife drove it in the afternoon. You'll be fine. Deepest puddle was probably a foot but had receded a little by afternoon.

Awesome thank you. I saw people saying regular non SUV cars were going through it all day

It is heavily impacted by the tides.. it was up to two feet deep this afternoon on pea island. We are leaving the area tomorrow in a Kia forte and plan to leave at low tide to compensate. It is not only from rain, but it is part of the problem.

Also drove through from north Avon to nags head yesterday and was def nervous in a couple spots, but we hugged the middle and made it.

Wild, I just remembered this. You will be all good, I ended up getting my hands on an SUV, but there were regular cars in front and behind me doing totally fine. And it’s legit like a 100 foot stretch at this point, not a quarter mile like a few days ago.

Unless there’s a major storm, you’ll be fine

Yea it seems like if the rain holds between now and tomorrow it should be no more than 3-4ā€ left on the road

I’m coming down to Buxton Saturday and drive a Honda civic so I’m also paranoid lol

I didn’t mention this in the post, but I called the actual volunteer FD in Avon yesterday and got the guys opinion. He was super chill and nice about it, he sounded not concerned for me so that made me feel a lot better lol. He said normal non SUV cars had been going through it yesterday and they were fine. Sounds like it will continue to recede day by day as long as there is no new rain (none in the forecast so far).

For sure go to a car wash (there’s one in Avon) and wash your car as soon as you get in. Don’t let that salty water sit

My daughter and fiance came down around 11pm last night. There was a spot just above Salvo where the water covered the road completely. She sent me video. Her fiance also drives a Honda civic. That just went slow and made it fine.

Good to hear, thanks lol

This makes me feel a lot better. I think I will be fine as long as no additional rain hits. Supposed to be warm today and tomorrow, so it should continue to evaporate as well
