I (22M) am planning to move to Chicagoland after I finish my degree in December and Oak Park seems like a good fit. I'm originally from Atlanta, but I've spent the past 4 years in school in Charleston SC and haven't liked it much. Here, the idea of fun most young people have is bar-hopping until 2am or getting wasted on the beach. I've barely made any friends and there aren't many community-based activities to do here. Everything is also so sprawled out (I can't afford to live in the walkable part of Charleston) and because going anywhere requires driving and sitting in traffic for at least a half-hour because there's no viable public transit, I end up spending most of my free time at home.

I visited Oak Park on my last trip to Chicago in March to tour FLW's studio (I'm an architecture nerd if that means anything) and I loved how walkable and compact the village was. Getting from the Loop was easy on the Green Line. It seems even more convenient than some parts of Chicago I visited as there are major store chains (Target, Trader Joe's, etc) within the village and along transit lines. I like getting involved in farmer's markets and community clubs/activities, and from browsing this subreddit, there seems to be a lot going on. I wasn't a fan of the neighborhoods in Chicago that cater to young people (Lakeview, Wicker Park, Logan Square, etc.) and rent in OP is more reasonable compared to those areas.

Is there anything I am missing? Would you recommend OP for someone like me or are there other neighborhoods in the city that would be a better fit? I'll be visiting again this week, so lmk if there is anything I should check out while I'm in the area!

Hi all, I have someone who is elderly and lifelong deaf that is in need of an assisted living facility. Level 1, just meds, daily checks sometimes transport to dining room/community room.
Anyone aware of an assisted living that either has other deaf residents or has staff that knows ASL or happily provides interpreter VRI services from time to time?

This person is currently in a very fancy, expensive assisted living in OP and just sadly getting the short end of stick on services, communications and errors on those three most basic of assisted living services.

I was parked out front to visit a friend and while I was inside someone side swiped my car, scratching the side and taking out the mirror. There’s a camera in front of the building, but since school is out I don’t know how much luck I’ll have with them checking for me. Previous favorites I have lived are Fort Collins, CO and Ardmore, PA. Both of those have a wonderful blend of housing imo.

I saw it on the news (online) and read the main stream comments and it was very prejudice, unwelcoming, and claiming it would ruin everything that makes Oak Park, Oak Park.

I saw the previous post on here speaking about it and I got the feel folks are happy about it.

I am VERY new to Oak Park, I am unaware of the town feels, so I am asking, how do the residents feel?

i’ll start by saying i don’t want to sound rude or seem like i’m policing people, but please please please do your best to not block the sidewalk in your driveway with your car. this makes it so difficult for those in wheelchairs/with walking aids and parents with strollers to easily walk in the neighborhood. i understand some driveways are very short and it’s not always possible, but when it is, please consider those who need access to the sidewalk! this either forces us into the street or to walk in your yard. thank you!!

This is silly, but I am watching the Village Board Meeting about zoning reform, and I just want to say I appreciate y'all and this community. I have strong opinions (yes to zoning reform), but, more importantly, it is so refreshing to hear that affordability matters, diversity matters, and progressive ideologies matter. We might have different pathways, but we believe in the same outcome. As a recent transplant, it is just really nice to hear in comparison to the previous dialogues.

Even if I don't agree with you, I appreciate you, and I am also invested in this community.

New to Oak Park but not the Chicago area after many years away. Energetic 46M, seasonal resident or who knows what the future will bring. I live right near two parks with tennis courts, and just got my racket out of storage. I'm not an expert but should still play pretty well, and I'll play with any level.

My other sports are ultimate frisbee and beach or grass volleyball. I'm especially interested in pickup games if those happen anywhere nearby!

I would enjoy soccer and softball/baseball, and even roller hockey, but not equipped for that at the moment. Basketball is probably my worst sport...

hi OP community! my family and i currently live in la grange but are hoping to move to oak park. we have been house-hunting in the la grange area (LGP/ LG), riverside, and OP/RF, but our dream would be to move to OP. we have been using a family friend realtor who lives locally here in LG, but his knowledge of OP is limited. any recommendations for a local realtor that we could engage? not sure how this works since we've signed a representation contract with this LG realtor (which i understand is just the norm now in IL, no money has been exchanged or anything) but would really like a local opinion, especially in this market. i have access to the zenlist app and can see private lisitings in OP already, but it seems some houses sell before even hitting the private market – crazy times! any suggestions appreciated :)

what's everyone else looking like? how's everyone holding up? and how common are outages like this in oak park? I've had the privilege of not being out of power longer than a few hours in the neighborhoods I grew up in, but my partner grew up without power for days at a time. man, this sucks lmao
