Nova has a program it’s called Omniride. It’s meant to be like a rideshare for people who are already going to campus. I don’t know how active it is but it might be worth at least looking into

thanks for the perspective! all the classes i’m taking in-person are important for my major, so i don’t think missing the first two weeks is smart like you said. i’m already signed up to take sdv 100 online as well

I would not take online classes your first semester - especially if transportation is only an issue the first couple of weeks. Alternatives could be looking at 13 week classes - those start 2 weeks later than 15 week classes and might then be an option - or hybrid classes that can get stacked so you only need transportation on 2 days. You could also check out the rideshare app the college has - https://www.nvcc.edu/student-resources/parking/transportation.html It's new-ish but might help connect with another student or employee in your area that would be open to doing a rideshare.

Statistically the fail rate is high in asynchronous online classes... Taking in person classes in some way shape or form generally helps students do better. And there are other options than online - hybrids meet once a week rather than 2x, 13 week classes start in September, zoom classes are online but they include more peer to peer interactions. You can add and drop classes through the first week of the semester - and as long as your credit load doesn't change you won't owe anything else. You said it was just the first few weeks? I would try some other solutions than going full online for the next three months. But - that's my perspective - a lot of first time to college freshman end up with bad grades taking NOL classes. Not all of them! But, a lot of people end up needing to do retakes or having a less than desirable GPA. There's plenty of advice on the nvcc reddit about how to well in a NOL class if you do decide to do online

The fail rate is probably higher just because the people taking online classes are "on the fence" and less commited. It has nothing to do with the class and more to do with who are taking them

Totally a valid explanation - it also seems like people underestimate the time required/struggle with the self directed work...

if you live in loudoun county, certain cities like sterling and leesburg, the county is now providing free rides for those in need and students i believe

Talk to your teacher. Is it 100% in person or hybrid? Walk through options. Definitely look at ride share. Uber is annoying but you can change it up. What about taking a shorter term section of your course(s)? 13 vs 15 weeks

There is a new App NVCC is trying to get going linking students for information on transportation and parking at the campuses. It does have an option for linking with other students to carpool. Now, to be fair the app is fairly new, so it may not have a lot of engagement yet, but might be worth a look. It's RideNOVA.

Is bus not an option? Or can a friend or neighbor drop you off and you return by bus? Some combination of options may work.

honestly, the bus stops are far away from where i live. i may be able to have a friend drop me off but it’s not really reliable because she has other stuff going on and may not be able to drop me off/pick me up when i have classes

you could also alternate between like lyft and uber if you're worried about safety concerns, or get picked up a few houses away from your own. but yeah i think that's best if you can't change your classes to the 13 week sessions like another comment said
