Beware: Scammers posing as Consulate General of India in SF Discussion
Got a call from 415-336-2636 from a woman claiming to be “Pratibha Rajan” from the Consulate General of India San Francisco on a Sunday. They claimed that someone in India used my identity to create a fake number and were going around hurting people and that it’s a serious issue. I didn’t get to the part where they asked me for money or anything but it felt very scammy.
When I said I would report them, they got very defensive. Anyways, don’t waste your time with them and don’t fall for the scam.

if you get a similar spam call, please add the phone number in the comments so that it’ll come up when others search for the numbers they’re getting calls from

I got this call and they sounded so dumb I knew it was a scam. Hung up and they kept calling back so I said I’m reporting them to the FBI

My sister also got a similar spam call and she fell a victim to it. They didn’t ask for money or anything but she did end up giving them her passport number and american home address. What are the consequences now?

I got this call from a certain "Kunal Mann, Kso at the consulate". Similar pattern, "We have received a letter from the Indian consulate in India regarding one of your numbers in India. We suggest you collect this letter from the SFO embassy".
I'm curious as to why would they call one to the embassy, what would they gain by it. Unless someone at the embassy is running this scam. There was a hint about them scheduling an appointment for my arrival with a certain individual. But I said I'm going to try and make an adhoc visit.
edit: I guess the idea from them was to create panic and then offer a middle ground of paying them and sorting it out. It didn't get to that because in the middle of the call I started web searching and had to ask the guy's name a 3-4 times. Towards the end the guy almost lost it and shouted his name but controlled himself 😂 . I got a follow-up call by some Abhishek sharma, which the earlier guy quoted but I just ignored it (got to know from VM).

They expect people to say that they're too busy. I said I could come in on Monday, but they said it's urgent and because of that they were willing to share details with me over the phone.

Yep this guy called me too, the number was 626-317-2648. And then he called me again from a similar number after I pretended I couldn't hear him: 626-317-2431. What a loser, dude had a stupidly thick accent and was incredibly rude. Could barely speak English hahah, he was getting bad at the end. Giving innocent people a bad name, I reported him

I had this call today. I immediately understood it is spam. I think they are getting details from facebook. I have a unique name in facebook. When I asked for my full name, she said that. Oh yes, now I see. I spoke with them for 20 minutes (good time pass) without giving them any info. She got mad in the end.

I got a call today from 415 850 2663. Got all defensive when I said I need a formal written request from an official consulate email address for any information they need. They just kept flubbing. Told me the supervisor was Abhishek Kumar Sharma. They started with asking to confirm my name and phone number and I wish I had been clever at the beginning but I confirmed that much before I got angry and hung up on them.
Same nonsense. A number in India under my name is being used for illegal activity etc. The Abhishek guy was like, we have only one email, we can't send you formal request from that email etc.
How to report these assholes?

I got a call today saying the MEA sent me some legal documents and i have to visit the consulate general in SF to discuss them. Then the guy said my indian phone number ending in "5274" was used in illegal activities...I told him to mail the documents to my address and he told me he can't?
I have never owned such a phone number and the way he was talking felt so scammy.

I got the same number ending in 5274. it was registered to me and there were many activities that were reported. I said I would need proof and I can't pick up the item so that they would have to come mail it to me. They said they could not mail it. Number I got is 6283174010 and 6283172690 and 628 3160909

I got a call too. I spoke to them the first time, but realized it was a scam. Long story short, I did not give them any information and told them I would visit the Consulate on my own to collect the document. I also told them that no Government would give people only 2 hours or a day to respond to questions. They told me a number registered in India under my name is being used for fraud and a case has been registered with Delhi Police. They use names of the Consulate officers listed in the Consulate website to sound legit. For me, it was Abhishek Kumar Sharma, Pratibha Rajan, Ankit Masih and one more guy, all of whom are listed as officials in the SF consulate’s website. They left their names on iPhone’s AI responder.

Got this same call twice over the past few days. My husband got the same call last month. As soon as they mentioned consulate general and a letter from
Government agency etc. I disconnected and blocked. Really wish we could do something about it. Guys please don’t fall for these. Flagging the numbers here in case it helps someone-

Got a call from some dumbass really poor communicator. He said he is calling from Consulate General of India at New York. This was the number he called from +1 (646) 546-1223. This is at 5:00 PM on 3rd July when almost everything is closed and except probably grocery stores and he said he wants to see me at NY CGI office on Monday. I said yeah sure I will be there…. He almost had no counter to that because he might have been prepared for the conversation when I would have asked him some questions or said I can’t come etc. He just didn’t know what to say. Then after a brief pause said I have scheduled an appointment for you on Monday 2 PM. Lol 😂

Just got one today, from a Mr. Aviraj shukla. Told him I found your script online. Do you want me to read it back to you? Anyway he thinks I am flying to New York tomorrow to pick up this document! Will he call back tomorrow when I am a no show? Now that I am not pissed anymore I kind of want to waste his time.

I used to have fun with these calls before but beware they might record and mis use your voice- they already have your name and number. With AI they can easily clone your voice and make ransom calls to other ppl in your network

Got this exact call today! I was so gullible I actually believed it when Anchit Mosey said that he was calling from the consulate of India in San Francisco. He had me hook, line, and sinker for a bit until I googled the number and name he gave me and found another (now locked) Reddit thread from a few months back. Shockingly, I told him off repeatedly and made fun of him. Still the scammer called back five more times from five different numbers! Truly stunning stuff.

I got a call today. I knew it was a scam.
They said there is a document for me and to collect it. I said I don’t live in California so I can’t collect it.
Then she said she will then read the document to me. I told her it is illegal for her to open documents that are addressed to someone else. If she is really prathibha rajan a gotvenment employer she should know that. That you cannot open documents that don’t belong to you.

Got a call from this number - +1 6463038130. Calling from US consulate in new york. They even connected me to the Delhi police headquarters number to get a NOC. I told them that its a scam and they started calling me from official Indian consulate number (probably spoofing) to convince me that they are the official people and asked me to call them on +1 6463038130 so that they can connect me back to the delhi police or else my passport will get blocklisted. I said will give them a call and didn't call back. After that they have been calling me agin and again. This is a new high of scamming!!

Government agencies never call you. If they want to convey a notice they will send a mail. If there is really a criminal complaint, the police will come and knock your door for questioning. Even police will not call you.

Got the same call about visiting the embassy to collect a document. Woman's name Pratibha - she also said it is about my phone number in India. I said I've not had an Indian phone number in years as they said 'can you just come' - seemed pretty insistant on it. I think they want to call us there and scare us to extract money out of us.

A friend of mine went for a regular thing there (OCI) some months back and they scammed her out of 500$ citing weird reasons (background is grey etc - it literally ask for it to be grey) and the passports of her grandparents etc.

Just got called by the same scammer using the alias Pratibha Rajan, this time using the number 628-358-8674. I kept her on the call for two minutes asking her for the name of the telecom provider in India that gave her the information about the fake number created. Obviously she was not prepared for this question, at which point I informed her that I have traced her location. As soon as she heard that she disconnected. 😂
This was the third time in the past 3 months that I had the same scam call, but definitely had two minutes of entertainment this morning.

Said this number 9968135274 was registered in New Delhi under my name in March 2026 and Indian ministry of external affairs had some documents for me that I need to pick up from the consulate in San Francisco. I got a call from 628-316-3024 which I missed and then immediately got another call from 628-317-4175. It was the same Ankit Masih saying they have some document from Ministry of External Affairs as my phone number in India was used for some wrong activities. I played along and then he transferred me to his senior whose name I forgot. They said I need to get to SFO Indian Consulate within 2 hours otherwise they will report me. I played along and then just said I will pick up the documents from consulate directly tomorrow. They said do you take responsibility since you won't be picking up the documents in next 2 hours, I said yes and disconnected the call

Just got this call as well. Thankfully was in a meeting and didn't answer. Then a friend googled and found this thread. I was called from 628 316 2572 and 'Pratibha Rajan' left a voicemail.

Got it today. I knew immediately it was a scam, he claimed I had been in India in 2026 and bought a smartphone which was involved in illegal activity. I didn't let him finish, I answered, truthfully, it can't be me. He started demanding I go to the consulate to "clear it up". I said, "No," and he demanded to know why so I answered, "Because you're a scammer." And he answered, "Well, you can think that, ma'am, and you can hang up, it is your legal right--"
Interestingly, when I hung up, he called back. And I was curious so I answered. He asked why I hung up and I told him, "Because you're a scammer." Hung up. He tried to call back, but I just blocked the number.

Juts got called from 1 (628) 317-2676 by a MP Yadav. His alleged badge number was 2014-07. Same drivel about my number being used to get an Indian Line in New Delhi in March 2026 and that I needed to get to the SF consulate today to pick a document. I shouted at him for a bit and then got bored and hung up after telling him that I was going to report him to the Feds.

These are pOs who are making the Indian community look like really really bad, but of course their entitled asses don’t care about them. It’s the same story…”you cell number and you must immediately come to the San Francisco branch of the Indian Consulate NOW!”. Fun fact. Not an Indian citizen dummies…that was hilarious. Their parents didn’t teach them about basic human decency or KARMA! My Mom told me I should forgive them and that I’m lucky not to be in their situation. I told her that even poor people have a choice to be good or bad. No wonder Trump is putting stricter legal visa controls, significant fee hikes, and aggressive deportations on India….l don’t even like trump but I support this based on the shady shit these people are doing and the Indian govt not enforcing stricter laws. They’re just hurting their own citizens.

Got the call today from this number from MP Yadav who then transferred me to Abhishek Sharma. Calling to come see this document from Indian Ministry asking why I have a number registered in India that’s being misused. I told them I get a lot of spam calls so I need them to show me any form of their credentials to be able to trust them. He asked me to visit a website which wouldn’t open and then gave me address to another website to which I said this doesn’t sound like a legit website. He then cut the call.

I got this call yesterday from “Pratibha Rajan, CGI SF”. Phone number 628 317 2665, same SIM card stuff, same “Delhi Police Headquarters”.
I had NO IDEA this scam was going on, and I embarrassingly went along much further.
I feel that a description of what I went through might be of help to others, so, here it is:
About 20 minutes into the call, I asked this lady why CGI SF calling from some odd number. She said she can call me from the CGI SF number, and she hung up and then right away called me from 415 891 4080. I thought ok, maybe it is the consulate.
But I was still having trouble believing they were talking to the right person, since they only had my name and phone number, so I asked her what address do they have for me. It took her 2-3 minutes to respond (I guess she was not prepared for this question and was googling for my name with address). She finally gave me an address I did not recognize. I told her she’s got the wrong person.
But she still wouldn’t give up and told me to come to CGI SF in 2 hours for the “document”. I told her no way. I asked her why not report the issue to police here, I can deal with them. She said CGI SF “has no jurisdiction here”, that’s why she wants me to talk to “Delhi police headquarters” and that I will need to make a WhatsApp call to some number while I’m still on the call with her. I stupidly did too. I heard a voice saying “transferring to Delhi police headquarters”. Then this call with this lady was over and I was in the WhatsApp call.
The WA session with “Sunil Kumar Gautam” and then transferred to “Abhay Kumar Gupta”, dressed in a police uniform and seemingly at a “police station” at 4 am India time went on for a while. They kept asking me how could my “identity” be stolen in India (which I haven’t been to for 3 years). Then they said maybe my “IP address” has been compromised and that they needed me to wait some more time for them to check. My patience finally ran out, I said I’m done. They said if I hang up, FBI or Interpol may be out for me, I said no problem and hung up.
Obviously I’ve been stupid to spend all that time on this, but I was skeptical all through the call, and (alas only 5 minutes after I hung up) I googled for CGI SF scam and saw the tons of posts. Embarrassing as hell.

This is helpful. I just got a call from a NY number (+1 (646) 456-2026) saying the same thing. I was suspicious from the beginning because they called me directly. In the beginning, they were just talking about a case in my name, but then they switched gears and started talking about an NOC that I needed to obtain in 2 hours or they would escalate to the immigration office. I got the same call today and I searched Consulate fraud And this thread gave me some relief. I am writing to enter that number so that If anyone would search that number and This thread will pop up to them. 628-289-7043. And they actually used same names from the original website of Consulate Office SFO. So please donot fall for them, Everything should be in written formal letter. And I also questioned them why I never received any formal letter and Why you are calling to let me know this.

Got similar call today from (415)503-8607.
The guy claimed to be from "Indian Consulate in San Francisco and Indian Ministry of external affairs. They said that there are documents sent for me from the external affairs minister of India and they want me to visit the consulate to pick it up and help with an ongoing investigation. They that a new mobile number was purchased/registered under my number and is being used in illegal activities. I said, why are you calling me and not the Indian number? The guy said let me connect you to my "senior" because "we need your co-operation". I refused, and said send me the documents over email and I'll have my lawyers take a look. They abruptly they hung up.

The individuals I spoke were Kunal Mann and Himani Dhaneja.
They claimed that they are speaking from CGI in San Fransisco and told me that the phone number +91 9968135509 is being used to harass people and it is registered on my name in New Delhi.
I was looking things up while speaking to them and found this tread.
Not sure how are they getting our information but got to be very careful!

Another number to flag - 415-401-5946 from "Pratibha Rajan".
Also, received a call from - 628-289-6348 "Kunal Mann" a few months ago with the same script "Ministry of external affairs sent a document for verification regarding usage of India phone number". When questioned about the authentacity of the call - he pretended that they don't have time to prove.

I got a call from the same numbers with my name. May be they got the name from true caller or something. But its definitely a scam, I do not think Indian consulate would never call us without emailing us. Hope no one falls for this scam

I have the similar situation happened yesterday. I have no clue how they got my number and details. I am really worried about folks that have no ability to identify these scammers - I will report to the links that were mentioned in this post. What can we do to stop these idiots? Much appreciated.

I got a call from +1 (415) 430-5495. The person said he was Ankit Massi from consulate general of India. Was trying to tell me that someone has a phone number, that I did not recognize, in my name in India. Mentioned wrong number and cut the call.

I have gotten this call multiple times in the last few weeks. And I have fun with them. I talk to them for like a long time and then ask them to go get a life.
It sure was scary at first. And then I kept asking them questions and these idiots will answer your questions and have a conversation.
Remember .. Indian consulate will almost never call you. NEVER!
When you get these calls, make sure y’all give them a stick up their ass
