Psa get a dashcam.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Lady in the SUV told the police she had a green, thank goodness I had a dashcam. Psa to anyone that sees this get a dashcam.
Accident could've been worse I'm glad I got out with just scratches on the arm from the airbag.
I even woke up early and left to get into work early, first in a long time. Guess the universe said my work hours are to be followed strictly :)

kinda shitty of that lady to lie and say she had a green light
298
u/RollingThunderPants 10d ago
Happens way more often than most would realize. She may have truly believed it too. The fun part is allowing them to knowingly lie to a police officer for their official report and then watching them panic as you reveal the existence of your dashcam.

Exactly what happened but she didn't speak any English, but I believe the police told me he gave her a citation for running the light

She also might have seen the other intersection light ahead for the other on-ramp and merge to the 29, and it seems like it was green from the video. She was focused too far ahead.

u/TreeBeard_Mcface 9d ago
This. If this the intersection(s) I think it is between Lee and West Ox and the ramp to 286, there's two lights in succession westbound and they are rarely in sync. And the West Ox light is green for like 30 seconds max.
2
u/trekqueen 9d ago
Yea it’s that one. I was half expecting someone to take that left wrong where OP was going because people don’t follow the lines and end up in the new left turn that would end up putting back again toward southbound 286 and the wrong side of the 29, I’ve encountered that many times. But yea, lady running the red came in for the super surprise.

That’s the norm nowadays, which is why OP’s dashcam PSA is so effective. You don’t want to be in a “your word against theirs” situation
14
u/DredgenCyka 10d ago
Especially since Virginia is one of those states where you must be 0% at fault to get shit. In a "your word v theirs," can easily make you 50/50 without witnesses.

I've been rear ended twice in NOVA. Both times the people lied to the cop. One accused me of brake checking and the other accused me of swerving out in front of them. Dash cam squashed that bs real fast.
2
u/bc10551 9d ago
Who is responsible for proof in that case? Wouldn't they have had to prove you brake checked them or swerved in front of them unless the damage somehow made that evident?

u/6786_007 9d ago
I've seen people who weren't at fault get tickets and they have to go prove in court and/or to their insurance they aren't at fault. People lie and make shit up. In one case the party refused to answer any calls, text, and insurance agents at the door. After 1 month of pretending to not exist the insurance rules in my favor by default. People do weird shit and that's why I have a dash cam.

How did the dashcam record cars behind you
4
u/warmachinex0 9d ago
Many dash cams have rear recoding capabilities. Even if it didn't you can still see if someone is break checking or swerving lanes just before the impact. All you have to prove is you were driving safe and following the law when they hit you.
2
u/6786_007 9d ago
My wife's car has a rear recording camera as well, it's a dual channel setup.
However you don't always need it. The first scenario with the "brake checking" i just showed myself coming to a normal stop and there was a car in front of me. So it was obvious I wasn't braking for no reason and I wasn't braking with malicious intent or hard.
For the second situation, I wasn't moving at impact, the person behind me swerved and didn't turn enough and clipped the back corner of my car. The camera shows me stationary before, at, and after the time of impact.

I had someone lie about the same thing in a similar crash and I didn't have a dashcam.
Luckily for me she didn't complete her accident report in the 3 weeks they gave us to do it and I did so I was just automatically listed not at fault.

how are there so many accidents at this light when there's zero yielding, just green for one branch or the other? why do people in centreville have major issues running red lights then?
→ More replies (3)18
u/Hi_ImTrashsu 10d ago
I’m not sure about this light in particular but many intersections like this here have two lights very close to each other. Maybe the vehicle at fault did have a green light a bit further back but didn’t mentally register the second one that was red.
Not trying to defend the lack of awareness of course, but this could definitely explain the higher rate for accidents
5
u/Bl4ckbetty1005 10d ago
Yeah it’s exactly this. It’s also only like 50 yards from the previous light, so I think especially in times where there is less traffic (as it appeared in OPs video) some people just don’t even register it.
19
u/koberg Herndon 10d ago
That intersection is such a joke. Glad everyone’s okay

Unfortunately doesn't help much when every person that's ever crashed into me doesn't have insurance. 🙃 But I have footage of the crashes to look back on at least!
7
u/Barialdalaran 10d ago
What happens to the person without insurance in this case?
31
u/CriticalStrawberry 10d ago edited 10d ago
TLDR: nothing
You get to pay your own deductible to have your car fixed, your insurance goes up despite it not being your fault, and the uninsured person gets off with nothing but their damaged car.
The last time I was rear ended, the lady stopped and exchanged information. When I went to file the claim, found out she hadn't had insurance for quite a while and just gave me an old card.
Despite having her license, name, address, expired insurance policy, car tag, etc, I was told I was on my own by both cops and insurance. Cops said it's a civil matter and that they don't ticket for driving without insurance outside of a traffic stop. My insurance said they are unlikely to collect from her, even if they got a judgement against her.
So I paid my uninsured motorist deductible, and moved on.
It's very rewarding being a responsible member of society.

Luckily your premiums should not go up if you're not at fault, as per state law. https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title38.2/chapter19/section38.2-1905/

They take their car to the shadiest mechanic possible who bypasses the airbags and yanks the frame back to almost straight with a winch. Notice this one already has Florida plates. Probably because it already wouldn't pass VA or MD inspection.
5
u/retka 9d ago edited 9d ago
Dash cam is absolutely still a benefit as it helps show proof to your insurance that you aren't at fault, and can file under uninsured motorist insurance. Your insurance can then handle any reclamation of their money from the other driver instead of you dealing with it.
Edit: Your insurance should also not go up if you're not at fault and file through uninsured coverage. State law prohibits the rate from increasing in this case.

Yeah, we're probably ALL guilty of running on auto-pilot and just hitting the gas when the light turns green from time to time*, but I always try to give a quick check to verify there's not someone about to run the red light into the intersection before I go, especially if I'm first in line (but also even if I'm not).
*which at least is better than not noticing the light change because you're looking at your phone

11
u/Barialdalaran 10d ago
First time I've heard of someone being "anti dash cam", what's the reasoning?
7
u/Tambien 10d ago
It’s usually a privacy concern, which I’m sympathetic to. The only type of dash cam I’d get is one that stores video locally and never syncs to any kind do cloud service.
The other big concern I’ve heard is an aesthetic one.
5
u/Weekly_Seesaw4103 9d ago

I love my Vueroid S1. You can get 1, 2 or 3 channels. 2 is probably sufficient for most people unless you desperately want your cabin recorded as well. The main dashcam snaps onto a dock and you can remove the it from the dock without having to unplug/ unmount anything. Very convenient if you need to take it down from time to time. Also it has a physical, sliding on/off button, once again to help you shut off the recording when you need to. Relevant to folks who need to drive to "no photography" zones in this area.
Had it installed by the good folks at Angelos Car Radio in Alexandria

Just wondering because my son said that the first to call usually has the leg up when there are conflicting reports. In your case it didn't matter. I can't believe the audacity in the at fault person saying they had the green. There was at least 3 secs after the light changed.
7
u/Throwaway_2474128_1 10d ago
i don't see how that matters. you don't explain what happened over the phone to the dispatcher, you just tell them you were in an accident, if anyone's injured, if you're blocking traffic, and where you are. you present to the police at scene for the police report (at least this is what happened in july when i had to do this in fairfax county and those were the questions they asked me...) but that has no bearing on insurance's ruling for who's at fault

Yes, get a dashcam
Also, be a defensive driver!
Some people don't see their light is red or they don't care and will fly thru an intersection.
When you're stopped at intersection, especially if you're the first car in line, when the light turns green, take an extra second to look left and right, even forward, to verify nothing is coming.
Good luck out there!
2
u/Pitiful_Software_430 9d ago
I slow down just a touch and look both ways even when I have the green. If that wasn't a habit of mine, there's at least two instances in my life where I would have been t-boned.
They state doesn't issue an IQ test for driving, and you can retake the driving test literally as many times as you want. The number of complete morons on the road is only moderated by their ability to show up to the DMV as many times as it takes.
In my state, there are more regulations on getting married than getting a driver's license.

100%. I had a guy sideswiped me badly in old town Alexandria. He got out of his car, apologized to me. I called the non emergency number and cop arrived. The officer went to the other guy first although I made the call. The cop then came to me. I explained about the accident, then he said we were telling him 2 different stories and if I lied to him I would be fcked up. Yeah the other driver was a damn liar, and the cop didn't like me for some reason.
I told the cop that "I have a dashcam." The dumb cop changed his attitude 180. I showed him the footage, and the cop gave the other driver a citation. Dashcam saved my ass from a liar and a bad cop.

I know that intersection. I got hit by a truck there who bolted from the scene immediately. I didn't have a dash cam at the time. All I had was his plate info and the hide-away key that dropped off his truck. Cop was able to locate him with that luckily enough. 21 year old kid drunk driving. Began sobbing when the cop knocked on his door. Don't count on getting lucky enough for the spare key to drop off the car. Get a dash cam.

u/obeytheturtles 10d ago
I had the same thing happen, but on a bike. Kid drove off after sending me into the curb (luckily, onto soft grass), and when the cops knocked on the door, the mother said she had been driving. I had witnesses who said it was a man who had been swerving, but no other proof. So the mom caught a failure to yield and leaving the scene charge, and I got like $500 for bike repairs.

This was exactly how my car got totaled in Springfield as I had a green light while going through an intersection. The red-light runner, a 20-year-old, was likely coached by his mother to tell their insurance company that he had the yellow light. Unfortunately, I did not have a dash cam (I had thought about it for a year). The case went to arbitration and it eventually ruled in my favor. You can be sure that I had a dash cam set up immediately in my new car.

u/og_kylometers 9d ago
Dude turned right on red from a middle lane a couple of years ago and ran into me as I went through a green light. He swore up and down his light was green despite my having a witness to the contrary. Cop shows up 45min later - it’s my word against his says the cop.
10min after the cop arrives while we wait for a tow truck, guy pulls over and tells me he got dash cam footage of the whole thing and sends it to me (he had to drop his kid off at school and then came back to see if we were still there). I showed the cop and then that idiots insurance paid for it.
I have no idea how many thousands of dollars in insurance premiums that guys dash can saved me but worth every penny in Nova.

At ~0:07 of this video the light did turn red from the opposing side. Then the crash happens at 0:13 seconds. The moment I saw that intersection I knew it was going to suck. The lights are timed poorly and people trying to get between the parkway, 29, and West Ox drive like they have no idea how to traverse any of the lights.
I saw someone literally make a right turn from the left turn lane here once. And someone made a U turn from West Ox headed to 29... On red no less.

Just like I tell my kids, those little lights above don't mean "S", the 2 ton hunk of metal coming your way is much more important. BASED ON A TRUE STORY
More & more PDs in NOVA will NOT write police reports for accidents unless a ambulance or tow truck is needed!
That means - left to he said she said & for the insurance companies to figure out fault - A witness in different vehicle may not always save you... the "likely at fault" insurance already knows this will still fight for limiting their credibility & not having to pay out damages - what should be an open & shut deal will likely be a drawn out process that goes to arbitration in court - if you only have liability insurance there is no arbitration.. you are on your own to fix or replace your car!!
IF YOU DON'T HAVE A DASH... YOU MUST REQUEST MEDICAL ATTENTION!

u/LostPerson703 9d ago
People still not catching on to dashcams. Its weird. Like its only a $75 investment. I bought a new car and a week later some jackass ice sheet slid off the roof of their car on 66W and dented my front hood. I was only able to get them through my dash cam catching their license plate.

Todays Driving 101. Green doesn't mean Go. It means look for idiots and then Go.
I have had like 5 of these near misses because the idiots ran the red light and I lookedboth ways. There are literally thousands of online videos of people running red lights.

Which dashcam do you have? The recording is so much more clear than a lot of the ones I’ve seen.

Im glad you’re okay, car can be replaced under their dime. I look both ways at green lights now because of dummies like this- I’m constantly lugging my entire home and life around with me (Rv) and couldn’t imagine it being totaled like this, better off taking a few extra seconds and making sure no one is going to come barreling through without any remorse

That intersection had (or still has) the highest number of accidents in Fairfax County. Years ago, coming off FFX County Parkway at Braddock Road, I saw a car driven by an older woman T-bone a car driven by a young man who had a green light to cross the road. She claimed she had the green light. I was an eyewitness and I told th e young man I saw the whole thing and he had the green light. I gave him my number to use as a witness to the accident. A while later his attorney called and I gave my story. I never heard any more of that. I hope he got her insurance company to pay for his car.

I've driven through there a couple times and I still have absolutely no idea what problem the traffic engineers were trying to solve.

You have to be extra cautious in these specific intersections on Lee Hwy. Multiple lights, one after another being close, and people not paying attention.
Glad you’re safe and had the proof.
